Founded by the Canadian entrepreneur and the American actor a few years ago, the organization (pronounced one by one) pairs up one donor with one child all around the globe.
Working with partners, OneXOne targets five key areas in childhood development: water, hunger, healthcare, education and play. To date, they’ve raised more than $6 million — and they’re looking for more.
Elvis Costello performed at the low-key event and a who’s who of Corporate Canada got cozy with man of the hour Mr. Damon, who happens to also be the face of OneXOne internationally.
Matt’s devotion to this cause is so intense that the Toronto Star asked him about what motivates him. “It’s incumbent on us as citizens of the world to do the best we can within our sphere of influence to effect positive change,” he said simply. Damon later added: “We had a magnet on our refrigerator. It was a quote from Gandhi: ‘No matter how insignificant what you do may seem, it is most important that you do it.’ I was raised to believe that and I still do.”
