It was a memorable evening celebrating the best in sports from the past year as the 2009 ESPY Awards went down on Wednesday (July 15) at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. (The show will air on Sunday, July 19 on ESPN.)
Celebrities from sports and entertainment joined forces to commemorate major sports achievements, relive unforgettable moments and salute the leading performers and performances of 2009.
Among the many stars who attended were none other than Wimbledon champ Serena Williams and Wimbledon runner-up Venus Williams.
Bygones were clearly bygones as
Mike Tyson and
Evander Holyfield hugged it out backstage.
Representing the
Dancing with the Stars contingent were
Shawn Johnson,
Tony Devolani and
Brooke Burke.
Michael Phelps has 14 Olympic gold medals but only one ESPY. But that all changed tonight as the pot-smoking swimming champ posed with his second trophy alongside
Marissa Miller and
Jeremy Piven.
All in all, Phelps was nominated for Male Athlete, Championship Performance, Record-Breaking Performance and U.S. male Olympian.
Hottest couple of the night went to
Kobe and
Vanessa Bryant.
The NBA finals matchup between Kobe and LeBron James didn’t materialize, but even so, the NBA stars are facing off for Male Athlete Honours, along with Phelps and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson.
Demi Moore took a break from Tweeting to present the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. It’s presented annually to individuals whose contributions transcend sports.
Now that
Condoleezza Rice isn’t tied down to political mumbo jumbo she can finally throw on her red party dress and get down!
And, of course, no event would be complete without a representative from the Kardashian clan. As Kim and Khloe are currently in Africa for humanitarian photo-ops, former Olympian
Bruce Jenner and his 13-year-old daughter, aspiring model
Kendall Jenner, were on hand as substitutes.
