After rallying a grueling win against
Vera Zvonareva in a 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 tennis match during the recent Sony Ericsson Championship in Doha, Qatar, a dressed down
Venus Williams was spotted departing LAX International Airport in Los Angeles on Monday en route to a much-needed vacation.
The tennis ace won $1.34 million at the season-ending event, raising her end-of-year career earnings to $21.9 million.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s triumph in becoming the first African-American President has prompted Venus to talk about the sufferings her father had endured in less enlightened times.
Says Miss Williams: “America is a wonderful place. I love my country, and I love living there. I love my passport. But also it’s a country that almost since its beginning, it was supposed to be a place where people were escaping intolerance. It became a country that was really intolerant of different minorities and skin colours. My dad grew up in Louisiana, a place where he was called ‘boy’ and shown no respect. Where he couldn’t say anything. His mother was a poor sharecropper. So I think it’s amazing that America has the opportunity to have someone who is a minority of mixed race or whatever you want to call it. And, hopefully, it will just get more people opportunities and more people to work harder and say ‘yes I can do my best whatever my background is’.”

Tennis ace Venus Williams has netted a degree in fashion design.
The three-times Wimbledon Champion swapped her white tennis skirt for a black cap and gown as her family watched her graduate with honours from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday.
The banner day came after eight years of class work, because Venus’ studies were frequently interrupted by her tennis career. She won her fourth Wimbledon title in July.
Proud mum Oracene Price, dad Richard Williams and sister Serena Williams were all on hand to watch the ceremony.
Also attending her graduation were her sisters Lyndrea Price and Isha Price and her boyfriend PGA pro golfer Hank Kuehne.
Congratulations, girl!

Maria Sharapova ain’t the only one cashing in a little pre-USA Open fashion extravanganza.
Venus Williams has confirmed her status as a full-fledged celebrity by launching her very own clothing line.
Following in the footsteps of Sarah Jessica Parker (Bitten) and more recently Amanda Bynes (Dear), Venus has agreed to create EleVen, an exclusive range of sports and loungwear for the US retailer. Just like her celebrity designer counterparts, all items will be priced $20 or less.
When the Wimbledon champ steps onto the court Monday night, she’ll be rocking an outfit and shoes from her new label.
As for who you can blame for the recent influx of cheap celebirty designed duds, may I point you to budget-minded retailer Steve & Barry’s. They’re the folks behind Bitten, Dear and now EleVen.

Tennis aces-turned-style mavens Serena and Venus Williams were looking fetching as usual at a Wimbledon Party in London today.
Serena glammed it up in a red mini and leopard print stilettos while older sis Venus kept it understated in black skinny jeans, a black blouse and a Britney Spears-inspired gold lame bag.
Staying true to their over-the-top reputations, the Williams will play in this year’s Wimbledon with the Wilson (K) Factor, a 22-carat gold leafed tennis racket.
The dogooder sisters plan to donate 10 autographed rackets for auction by The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
That being said, may the hateration officially begin.
