Say awkwaaaaaaaard!!!!!

Looking cheery as only a publicist from FOX can demand, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson were all smiles as they attended auditions for for the eighth season of the former hit show at Chelsea Piers in New York City today.

In a tongue in cheek remark, Simon said he welcomed catfights between Kara and a turf defending Paula. “I love catfights,” he told OK!. “I encourage them. It’s no fun if everyone gets along.”

“I wouldn’t have recognized Kara by the way Paula described her,” Simon deadpanned. “I was expecting someone maybe 50 years old, about 180 lbs., maybe a bit of gray hair.”

Meanwhile, Kara, a multi-Grammy nominated songwriter in her own right, sounds pretty sure of herself and insists she’s ready for her new job. “I’m a little nervous,” she said. But when asked to describe herself, she used the word “feisty.” As for Paula? Posed the same question, she said: “Gaaahh…mmmmm….blech…”

Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell better shove a cheek.

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi is joining American Idol as a fourth judge when the eighth season premieres in January 2009.

Says Fox reality honcho Mike Darnell in the release: “For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges’ table. … With Kara by her side, Paula finally has some back-up and now there is going to be a lot more ‘girl power’ on the show.”

Looks like A.I. is willing to try another to make the show interesting and new following last year’s lackluster season. Will it work? We doubt it.
