During the 18th hour of his Labor Day Telethon over the weekend, longtime entertainer Jerry Lewis uttered the F-word.No, not that F-word — the other one. You know, the one that sent former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Isaiah Washington into rehab for two weeks.
But since Jerry is old and — let’s face it — not borderline senile, I doubt he will be seeing the inside of a rehab facility any time soon.

giftbox. . . I think it’s mainly the old guy factor. Michael Richards is rich & white and he’s pretty much ruined for being caught making bigoted remarks. Moreso that Isaiah Washington, I reckon.

I think it’s ridiculous that these people are forced to rehab because of a simple word. I mean, you can hear when someone says it in a malicious way, and when it’s just meant as a joke. People are just very uptight these days IMO. I can’t remember ever seeing a stand-up comedy show that didn’t mention the word. And it’s just in plain fun.. Lighten up.
I think its more than him being old that this won’t be made into a big deal its that almost NO ONE watches the MDA telethon anymore. I watched about 20 minutes and was bored to tears.
Jerry’s skin may be white but he’s a Jew so by very definition not Anglo Saxon.

I think he gets a pass, simply because he’s old–and irrelevant. He’s from a different era, and nothing’s going to change the fact that for old farts like him, “faggot” was the ultimate slur against another man.
But I have to wonder, WTF happens to men of a certain age that they lose their internal filters? Imus, Howard Cosell, Jimmy the Greek–all of them said really inflammatory, stupid things and ruined their careers. I guess when they got old, they got stupid, too–or arrogant, thinking they could get away with saying racist stuff.
I think the day of telethons is over. MDA should use Jerry’s faux pas as an opportunity to just give it up and try another method of fundraising.
I thought I read a few years ago that most of their money is collected by young people and the money they raised is included in the telethon but its not separated out. The phone in money is minimal.
The big money for MDA comes from the major corporate sponsors whose representatives get to blather on during the telethon till rigor mortis sets in with viewers. It’s no longer entertaining, Jerry is arrogant, pathetic and, yes, now he’s making blatant slurs on TV. I’m sure he used to do the same thing in the old days of Vegas, right alongside Don Rickles and the other tasteless comics. The MDA telethon needs to stop and Jerry needs to become merely a figurehead for the organization.

i loved jerry for years. I love his humor, i grew up watching his movies. That will not change.
But, as a gay, and one that has had to fight to be open and free, it pisses me off. I will be looking into this, as i didnt see it. I hope he makes some kind of statement regarding this faggot statement. Yes he is old, and as we get older, so much really was true, with the parents and older people in most of our lives.
