Enjoying a night out sans the hubby and the kid, Katie Holmes was spotted at Cecconi’s Italian restaurant in Los Angeles last night (April 15).
The 30-year-old actress’ night out on the town was cut short when some tragic news was delivered — her brother-in-law has died.
A rep for Katie tells FYB that Joseph Jeffrey Fretti, the husband of Katie’s older sister, Tamera, died of heart failure.
The 48-year-old funeral director was reportedly found dead in Sarasota, FL by a friend.

The curtains on their SUV freak me the fuck out!!
The curtains serves for privacy from the paps. Its bittersweet with Suri’s B-day and her bff Posh but her brother in law died. That’s sad for her sister and the kids.
