Angelina Jolie is currently in Iraq visiting refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border as part of her role as Goodwill Ambassador. The Hollywood dogooder has also visited troops serving in the area.
According to a release just issued by the UNHCR in Geneva, the mother-of-four - who kicked off the trip yesterday in Syria - wants to see, first-hand, the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict in Iraq.
Angelina wisely opted to skip over the politics of the war, and instead chose to focus on the humanitarian needs. “I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said in a statement. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
I guess this finally explains why hubby Brad Pitt has been on full-time daddy duty for the past week!

But there’s a disasterous situation going on over there for the Iraquis (many of whom are forced to be refugees because they are being chased out by insurgents and the brutalities of cival and tribal war). Most Americans (moreso than the rest of the world because we’re leading the charge in “freeing” iraq as our - cough - president says). There’s A LOT that is not being shown to us because of obvious reasons (politics, etc.). The fact that she’s THERE will show some of the suffering of the average people whose lives will NEVER again be the same and have literally been destroyed because of this “war”. She’s doing more than most politicians (they need to take their asses over there to see what they’re causing and who is being hurt). We know about the struggles of our troops (and even that has been whitewashed to gloss over the REAL pain and struggles they face). But her going there will at least highlight the Iraqui people. sorry for the rant. ugh.

She’s so cool in my opinion… I would be too scared to go. With her not eating (much) I think it does have something to do with what she has seen… It’s hard to be eating great food when you know that right outside there are kids starving and is plowing through the garbage for food, I am not saying that’s the only reason. But trust me, it’s hard for me to each when I go back to my country, because I just for some reason feel so guilty to be eating, and feasting so nicely. Just in my humble opinion.
^That’s another side to it Anon. She has little ones at home. SHould she be doing this? Should she have had kids if she is determined to do what clearly is moving her? Who’s to say. I hope (and would prefer to think) that she’s taking the necessary safety precautions when going into these areas. I mean, there are plenty of journalists (male and female) who are there and in other dangerous parts of the world literally dying to tell these types of stories who have children at home. I don’t think having children is a reason to shy away from these situations. It may be all the more reason to do so.

And it would suck for her kids if something happened to her. I think she is doing a good thing, no doubt about it. But I am a bit more selfish as a mother I suppose, i wouldn’t want to do anything overtly dangerous that could cause me to never see my kids again. Maybe it’s just me, but i wouldn’t want to be that “brave”. glad there are other people out there to do it, I just wish they weren’t people with a bunch of young children themselves.

“diseased & ill” … These people are only diseased & ill due to their living conditions b/c they have been uprooted from their homes due to american occupation. Their life under saddam was far better - every Iraqi says so … All the rich & middle classes have managed to escape the country but the poor are the only ones left & they’re the ones suffering - at least under Saddam they had homes & a life … what have they now thanks to all the dumb americans that voted Bush in for a 2nd time.

it may not be the most digified fact, but photo opps ARE a HUGE part of political activism. they sway public opinion, which affects who is in office and what policies are made. the only reason viet nam isn’t still going is because of grotesque television images (and the resistance to the draft).
we haven’t had a culture of richly informed political debate since lincoln. it’s all about getting out the most powerful message in the quickest way, and that is through photos.
besides… what is so phony about giving the innocent victims a voice in this war? isn’t theirs really the most sincere and accurate assessment of the true cost? i don’t care who points the camera at them — angie, carrot top, or bill o’reilly — it’s in everyone’s best interest that we pay attention.

I lived in war zones, part of my family is dead because of war.
I’m not the biggest fan of Jolie but she’s there so I’won’t say a thing. I really don’t car about her intentions, either way no one had clean intentions, not goverments, not politicians, not the UN, not the companies..
That’s how our world works.

Yes, it easy to talk about Iraq when you haven’t lived in a war zone or you don’t have a child over thier. That’s why it galls me when you have these people sitting in the comfort of thier homes putting Angelina on a pedestal because she visited the place. In and out of the place in 24 to 48 hours. Having her picture taking smiling. She should not be held en exahaultation when their are people losing thier lives actually helping people without the benefit of dozens of armed guards and soldiers. Just a little persepective would be nice.

she may not be out there fighting and risking her life, but she’s not a soldier. the thing is she doesn’t HAVE to do this. maybe just being there she might put some spirit back into a soldier. they see so much ugliness over there, it might be nice for them to see a recognizable face. it might make them feel like someone, who doesn’t know them at all, cares.
yep, being there 24-48 hours might be nothing, so let’s hope we see more famous faces doing it.
They know people care about them. These soldiers get hundreds of letters from people who care about them and not for the photo opportunity. I know, I work on a military base and my son is in Iraq. So, please I can do without the Santa Angelina rife. It saddens me that some of you feel that having a famous person taking an interest in a cause makes it worthy and should be paid attention to. This is why these fame whores feel that they can really make a difference in the world. They can, but only for the ignorant and uninvolved who need people who wear make-up and pretend to be other people to get you interested in the planet they live on.

angelina did an interview fairly recently and said something cryptic/vague about wanting to be remembered after her death for her humanitarian work…going to Iraq is not a big deal to her and most hollywood stars know an early death (if something were to happen in her travels) means instant “legend” status…so it’s a win/win for her to go over and help…if she lives she feels she’s done something good, if she dies in an accident in rough territory, she becomes a “legend” overnight…however, I suspect she will be used as a pawn to push the idea that America is an awful war-mongering country by creating this “humanitarian crisis” in Iraq, which will further the fervor and efforts of those who wish to bomb our cities…that won’t be fun to have your skin burning/flying off from foreign attack, even for those who are U.S. citizens, yet hate their own country…doesn’t matter what your opinion is on Iraq…doesn’t change the fact that she will be used to push this point of view…just point for folks to ponder.
