FROM THE SLUMS TO THE RUNWAY

Earlier today (March 19), Slumdog Millionaire child actors Rubina Ali Qureishi and Azharruddin Ismail walked the catwalk for the Ashima Leena fashion show during Indian Fashion Week, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in New Delhi.

Earlier in the day, the young stars met the Congress party President Sonia Gandhi at her residence and requested her to provide them with better housing.

After the Danny Boyle-directed film’s success, there was speculation that 10-year-old Azharruddin and 9-year-old Rubina would be offered apartments by the government and the producers, but nothing has materialized and they continue to live in the slums.

After leaving the estate, Azharuddin told reporters: “Yes, if Sonia aunty says, then we will definitely get a house!”

Those kids have such sweet smiles :o). I’ve been wondering what was the hold-up in getting them new housing; the film has gone on to gross a lot of money, so why are they still in the slums?

What a rip-off! They STILL haven’t got paid? American child actors would be rolling in $$$ but the Indian kids are living in slums. Are they even in school?

These kids are just completely adorable! Especially that little boy, his smile could just warm the whole room! I don’t think the producers have ignored these children or their situation at all, but they can’t just jump into things and just hand them a new life straight away. I don’t think that would work at all because so many of those people would not know how to handle money properly. It’s sad that they are still in the slums, but they have had so much attention since the movie and I’m sure that things will turn around for them eventually.

Of course the producers can and should have made their lives better. How SAD that they have to beg for homes. Shame on those involved with this movie.
