Kim Ledger accepted the Best Supporting Actor Oscar on behalf of his son Heath at Sunday night’s (February 22) 2009 Academy Awards in Hollywood.

“This is ever so humbling,” he said. “This would have validated his determination to be accepted by you all here, his peers, in an industry he so loved.”

After the moving acceptances by Ledger’s family, Sally and Kate, Bill Maher took the stage to present the documentary feature Oscar to Man on Wire. He said, “Great, you’re all crying and now I have to go on.”

What an insensitive putz!

It’s just awesome that Heath won. And while it was pretty likely it was going to happen, it was still bound to be a very emotional moment, especially for his family. It’s just so sad that he couldn’t be there himself. RIP Heath and congratulations, well deserved!

I thought the speeches they made were lovely and very touching. As an aside… I thought his family were better dressed than some celebrities.
