To celebrate the influence of Blacks in fashion - from the players, to the clothes to those who’ve made fashion history - Ebony is dedicating 50-plus pages to everything beautiful in fashion.

Tyra Banks, Iman, Kimora Lee Simmons & Alek Wek grace the cover of the #1 magazine for African-Americans (with a devoted monthly readership of 12 million) and detail their individual tales of transformation from mere models to moguls, along with the reality of being a woman of colour in the fashion industry.

The September issue hits the stands Monday, August 13.

I wasn’t aware that the blacks had went anywhere.

Well Kimora is part black, started modelling for Chanel at the age of 12,started her own label BabyPhat and is veeery rich,so why shouldnt she be on the cover??
But Beverly Johnson should have been on the cover too.

Kimora does not deserve to be on there because she only got to were she is on the back of her husband whereas the other ladies did it independently.

Kimora is super bitchy. her new show is going to be annoying!!

Iman is gorgeous- actually they all are, apart from that Kimora woman (who i’ve never even heard of) who unfortuately looks like she has been stung by bees.
Sure Tyra is annoying but the woman can take a mean picture that is for sure!

Ebony Magazine is sooooo dated and irrelevant. They have the SAME damn format they had in the 70’s (when my mother used to buy the damn magazine). They need to step it up a few notches or at least bring the publication into this millineum. Iman is 51 years old andstill GORGEOUS. Kimora, however, is about as attractive and appealing as a used tampon. She’s the LAST person who should be on a magazine cover.

Stop stealing my thoughts all the time Supernova!
Although I think its alright that Kimora is there, I don’t think she’s the right role model, she seems a little more shallow than the rest (I know they are models but you get my drift). I don’t think she’s a powerful icon for women because she seems to be more about her rather than other women.
    Iman is preserving her sexy!

Kimora did not “start” her own label. She was completely bankrolled (and continues to be bankrolled) by her x-hubby (are they even divorced yet?)…He set it up for her because she would not stop interfereing with Phat Farm…she hasn’t “achieved” anything like Iman or Alex Wek who came over from Africa without a rich husband! Tyra has expanded on her 15 minutes into tv and production–again someone who made something of their lives instead of expecting it all to be given to them. If Karl Lagerfeld calls you a monster, as he called Kimora…she must really be a horrid, spoiled person!
Yeah! What about Beverly Johnson? Fay Wattleton? Carol Moseley Braun? Come on! Ebony!! Open your eyes!!

Kimora wasn’t even a successful model - she did a few jobs but wasn’t a supermodel like tyra, iman & alek wek …. liya kebede should have taken kimoras place - she has had more campiagns than any other black female model [apart from naomi c] & she is stunningly beautiful & does so much charity work these days

I agree with hehe, I love Liya Kebede

I never understood how Kimora was a model- she’s not pretty and she seems like an asshole to me (not that that matters when becoming a model)

Where’s naomi campbell on this cover? she’s black! and is recognized the world over as a super model where as some of these ppl are only recognized in western countries (i.e Tyra, until recently she was just the ameerican model).

Kimora was married to a rish black dude who paid for her to start her own tacky line of ghetto clothing. That’s why she’s on the cover.

  15. Charisma

well i believe she has some percentage of black in her blood. she was married to Russel Simmons(who is black and loaded) and had children with him… she did a bit of modeling and has a very successful clothing line… babyphat… lots of blacks where it (and other races! before im jumped on!) also she has a new show coming out soon and was on MTV a lot because of her ties to Russel and his brother “revrun” from “Run’s House” … thats good for her and the magazine. sales people! I mean they put her there for a reason, didn’t they?

Kimora…she has Russell to thank for her wealth. At least Iman,Tara & Alek worked theis asses off to be where they are now.

Supersonic, perhaps it’s YOU who are stealing MY thoughts! Hmmmm. LoL. Kimora sucks. And I hate how she’s constantly whoring out her two daughters in front of the media (they’re going to be JUST like her one day).

Man all the hating on Kimora, wow. I think she is a great woman who alot of Biracial girls could look up to. She’s beautiful and a career woman. Would anyone say the same thing about her “bitchy” behavior if she was a man, and making all those calls, hell if she were P.Diddy?

  19. parissucksliterally
    19

who here DOESN’T make fun of P. Diddy?
Marrying a rich man and starting a business because of his name and his money is not something bi-racial girls should strive for, IMO.
…and she needs to fix that nasty NECK of hers.

her father is black and kimore works hard as hell on her own and if she was with russell for the money she wouldnt be divorcin him and dont come wit how shell be gettin paid anyway because of Child Support and Alimony and blahblah cuz ma is paid with or without Russell. Every fly girl is wearing Baby Phat

Tyra really does deserve to be on the cover- she’s come a long way from a young black model trying to get noticed to having her own TV show and being the first African-American woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated! Fantastic!!
And I’ve never bought anything from the label, but Baby Phat does seem to be pretty popular, especially with black teens. Kimora wouldn’t have had the success she has had though if she hadn’t married Russell I don’t think.

sofly: take a breath and re-read my post. I said START her own business with his money. I never said this woman doesn’t work hard. However, she is an attention whore and exposes her children to the media, and it’s just gross, IMO.

  23. Sheri

I agree Kimora should not be on the cover. SHE’S NOT EVEN BLACK! In interviews she keeps changing her story, first she said she was Japanese, now she is saying she’s Korean. When she was on Tyra’s show she said that black women were jealous of her, and of course Tyra tried to smooth it over by saying she was half black as if that would help. Then in another interview she said black woman were mad because Russell didn’t marry a black woman. Any person who is mixed with black and another race you see more black than the other race. I only see Asian! Who is she fooling. Her mother told her that lie that she was mixed with black but that ain’t true! I have relatives who are mixed and you see more black than the other race.

Sheri- that is perhaps the most ignorant post I have read in a while. Sure the black genes tend to be dominant but that is not always the case. My cousin’s daughter is mixed and while her skin is a beautiful tan color she has “white” features. Generalizations are asinine.

Sheri, you don’t know what you’re talking about. My family is very mixed and I have relatives of all shades with all sorts of hair, from extremely pale with red freckles and red kinky hair, like one of my cousins, to more typically “black” looking. For myself, I’m tan with fine wavy hair–people ask me all the time what I am, but they’re always surprised when I tell them my father is African American.

    To Anon, and Rachel:
Every statement that I included is true and after reading your statements you
agree. ” For myself, I’m tan with fine wavy hair–people ask me all the time what I am, but they’re always surprised when I tell them my father is African American.” “Sure the black genes tend to be dominant, My cousin’s daughter is mixed and her skin is a beautiful tan ” Thanks for confirming my comment!

People I work IN paris, The fashion Capital of the world..And when I say this..I do Believe Kimora plays a key part IN the american african History of modelling.

I mean..she was one of Mr Karl Lagerfeld’s angels!..yes he did call her a monster, But I don’t think anyone knows how it reall is when you actually work with him..I give her props for actually having the courage to step up lagerfeld.

And i must address this issue about Kimora and her being nothing but a gold digger and that’s how she became the empire she is today…that is all a load of TRASH! She was already wealthy when she met Russel Simmons! She was a famous MODEL~! from the age of 13 she was a known face in the fashion world!..so you can’t say she marrying Mr Simmons made her who she is and what she has today. She is a very Smart girl and knows alot. Yes Russel Simmons made her that much more recogniseable, but even without him, I truely believe she would be still be the person she is today, as in having her own line of clothing and etc…
