February isn’t even here yet but it’s been quite a year for the British actress. She accepted the Best Supporting Actress award for The Reader at the recent SAG Awards. She was a double winner at the Golden Globes. She was given the Montecito Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, which is handed to actors who have given signficant performances in their career. Oh, and did we mention, she’s never looked better?
While Kate is enjoying career-topping success in America, it appears that she is facing a backlash in her home country of Great Britain. They think she’s “gone Hollywood.â€
In an article titled, Should Kate Winslet Win an Oscar for the World’s Most Irritating Actress?, the Daily Mail writes that Kate’s big appeal was her normalcy, “but then she caught a nasty dose of Hollywooditis. It happens to the best of them, of course it does.”
The movie critic continues to whine: “She was always ‘our Kate’. She grew up in a terraced house in Reading. She was quite proud of the fact she was called ‘blubber’ by schoolmates. This is how we Brits like our female stars to behave. They must be self-deprecating, ordinary, their heads unturned by riches or fame. This was what gave Kate Winslet her unique appeal.â€
But once she was tained with the corrupting influences of LaLaLand, she became “as drippy and as impossibly vain as the rest of them.â€
The British publication goes on to criticize Kate for her recent weight loss (she’s always been proud of being full-figured) and suggests that it’s result of fear stemming from the “ranks of younger, slimmer actresses snapping at their heels.â€

omg. people just cant handle others successes. jeeze. they should be on her side for god sake! she is representing the UK after all. and doing a darn good job at it so far. she is HUGLY successful and talented all around. and finally she is getting praised and rewarded for it and her own homeland cant just say “great job”. bloody bastards.

This just sounds like a great big helping of jealousy to me! Kate is probably the most down to earth actress out there, and I certainly don’t think she’s gone Hollywood. She has lost weight, yes, but good for her for looking out for her health. It’s not like she’s super skinny! She is a fantastic actress and she deserves all the credit she is getting for her roles.
Everybody hates the “cool kids” and hollywood actors are the cool beautiful people of the world. With Kate’s noms she’s being welcomed into that world of money. power and beauty. If you’re on the outside looking in. Sure your going to be a bit jealous… its normal. To hate on someone who’s got more then you. I get it but I’m still sad for her. Because she’s just living her life the way she whats. And that will always piss some people off.
Really, one article in the Mail is hardly the Vox Pop for Britain.

I just think it’s an unfair comment. Other than ‘The Holiday’, Kate Winslet does not star in Hollywood fluff. AND I’m not saying she’s unattractive in the slightest because I think she looks beautiful and in a natural way but she is by no means skinny. Her calves, knees and thighs look normal and not chicken legged like a lot of the other anorexic looking actresses.
Kate is as “down to earth” as they come. She’s an exceptional actress and you never see her in the tabloids for “bad behavior.” I don’t even think she, Sam and the kids live in Hollywood. I believe they do the NY-LON (New York - London) thing.Only one things worries me. She was nominated for lead actress in The Reader which is really a supporting role. Her lead performance was Revolutionary Road, not The Reader. I saw both and she was gave powerhouse performances in both films of course. But I just hope nominating her in the lead category for a supporting performance doesn’t screw up her chance to win it because she’s long overdue!
The British press has been saying Kate’s “gone Hollywood” since 2001, when she divorced her first husband. They are so mean to her. Leave her alone and pick on some other British star. They don’t tear the British male stars apart, do they? They always pick on the girls.

The woman who wrote this hateful article, Liz Jones, is a jealous, ugly and a bitter cow who always berates strong, beautiful and successful women – everything she herself isn’t.
