For any you who got to see Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza on Sunday night, you know that portions of the set were missing from the AT&T Blue Room live webcast.
Hmm…so just what was edited out? Segments of the band’s performance of ‘Daughter’, including the lines “George Bush, leave this world alone” and “George Bush find yourself another home.”
To no surprise, a rep for AT&T tells CJM: “We regret the mistake. This was not intended and was an unfortunate mistake made by a webcast editor.”
In response, Pearl Jam plans to post the performance in its entirety on their own site soon.
In the meantime, let’s hope that webcast editor is now an ex-webcast editor.
Censorship sucks!

at&t is a pro-republican company, donating plenty to campaigns. one reason they always get the gov’t’s support on anything the lobby for (yes, i am a former employee in the corporate offices).
i’m confused, “daughter” doesn’t have any lines in it about george bush….and damn near EVERY big corporation is pro-republican!!
wow dottcomm1!
you must have been pretty high up on the corporate ladder to have knowledge of their politics and their funneling of money! that’s awesome.
this is sort of like when cnn had a deal with sadaam hussein where they buried (no pun intended) bad news about the regime in exchange for a decade of access and interviews.
only, it’s not nearly as harmful as what cnn did. i mean, this is about as shocking as rage against the machine disliking bush and supporting che.
shameless and corrupt nonetheless. not to mention pointless…the word got out and now it looks even worse…besides, it’s not exactly cutting edge to be anti-bush.
i’m reeeeeeeeal tired of corporate lobbyists and the huge pull they all have.
ps. didn’t the govt break up at&t?
adam, why you gotta be a snarky bitch? you don’t even have to work for the company to find out what they’ve donated to campaigns, it’s public knowledge.
they should come to europe. i’m from germany and we’re all laughing at bush. so they can come and sing here. nobody will censor them…
Adam have you been following the news at all or do you just watch FOX? (Watch me make up a strawman argument that has NOTHING to do with debate just like Adam) My favorite thing is when FOX news repeatedly says the media isn’t reporting the good news coming out of Iraq. Guess what? You’re the freaking media, devote 24 hours to all the great feel good stories coming out of Iraq. I can see Sean Hannity now, “In other news, refugees continue to breathe”
AT&T is back to being a monopoly and my former Cingular cellphone just started to suck. Coincidence?
What AT&T did was straight up censorship. It didn’t used to be allowed in America. Those troops over there in Iraq fighting for your freedom (to drive an SUV) don’t like censorship as it goes against the Bill of Rights. A corporation CANNOT decide what you hear or see. It’s called fascism, a word that gets tossed around a lot but what AT&T did is truly the dictionary definition of it. Enjoy Adam!
where did i say i approved of at&t’s disgusting actions?
i just asserted that you only care because it’s(at&t) apparenly right wing.
tina, cool yourself down on the fox thing. you almost blew a gasket.
you’ve still got:
ap, al reuters, bbc, nyt, afp, lat, abc, nbc, cbs, pbs, npr, star trib, san fran chron, seattle p&i, boston herald, san jose mercs, dallas morning news, and many many more and most public universities and the entire public school system acts as an incubator for the dfl churning out ‘useful idiots.’
i strictly mentioned a media corp that was also censuring important news in favor of money and connections…but yea, that’s a straw man that upsets you almost as much as the surge in iraq having some successes…you’re waaaaaaay too invested in losing.

nice sidestep, there adam, except that the media that you mentioned are all owned by big corporations. and what about Rupert Murdoch who owns FOX, 132 newspapers (and is trying to buy the Washington Post!!!), 25 magazines, and harper collins books. he’s also on the BoD for Phillip Morris who donated 2.9 mill for Bush. MSNBC, NBC, CNBC owned by GE (as in general electric), the same GE that produces tubines for nuclear reactors, and the same GE that produces military hardware, and transportation systems.

You know….I don’t necessarily disagree with this kind of censorship. You know that if they had broadcast that section of the concert that there would have been a ton of complaints and people up in arms blah blah blah. So really AT&T was probably just saving their own ass and also a lot of Pearl Jam’s fans who may be republican…I guess they felt it was better that it was just left out. I really do think its important for people to know the whole story but I can understand why a company would do this whether they are republican supporting or not.
I seriously doubt many of Pearl Jam’s fans are Republican and if obviously Pearl Jam doesn’t care that their fans heard those lines, then either should AT&T. AT&T did what they did because they are a large media corporation tied extensively to the Republican Party. I am absolutely DISGUSTED at this censorship, yes, it IS fascism, the very thing our gov’t criticizes other governments for. Bush and Cheney have done so much damage to this country and the stability of the world, how DARE AT&T censor a few sentences against these abominations.
at&t is nothing less than pathetic, just like our gov’t. bush’s cronies censor so much news it’s pathetic. we know very little about our soldiers’ deaths and wounded because bush doesn’t allow the correct numbers be known. at&t did nothing but pander to the little weasel so they can continue to operate as slimy as other companies (hallibutron). bush cares nothing about the constitution, especially our freedom of speech.
okay i was branded ‘anti-american’ on this site for my music tastes so i am not going to TOUCH on what i think about this politically! haha
ps. go lolly
lolly: You are rockin’ hard-ball today. Go girl.
I love love love Pearl Jam. Seen them live a number of time. Oh, and I don’t think their fans are Republicans, Stephi.
I didn’t even realize Pearl Jam was still relevant. Occaisionally I hear them on the radio but its mostly songs made popular in the 90s.
Barks, I felt the exact same way until I saw VH1 Storytellers July 2006 with Pearl Jam——-they blew me away! Eddie Vedder is one THE most sexiest and caring men alive in my opinion. They do a lot of good things as well. But also, I LOVE their new CD which came out in 2006. You should check it out, has a big avocado on it.
Wouldn’t happen over here. You’d get dissed out of town if anyone tried that. I don’t know if everyone heard what happened when the BBC tried to edit some doco about the Queen to make it look like she was a diva and they got SLAUGHTERED. They had to apologise and it wasn’t even that big a deal. Funny.
man, when did become so normal to just live in denial of how idiotic this republican presidency has been….
Money party for a money crowd where the individual, the ideas are secondary and cash flow in the name of corporate is what makes a president.
Funny that Germans are laughing at Bush, we’ve been laughing @ Germany since about 1945… Western Europe (possibly with the exception of the UK) needs to accept its 2nd world status. You’re lucky that in the 21st century we let you sit at the big kids table.
Censorship is not the word here, folks. Recall the adage that “Who pays the piper calls the tune.” If AT&T is paying for Pearl Jam’s gig and for the performance rights, they have every right to edit the performance any way they want. Pearl Jam doesn’t have to take their money. Surprisingly, no one here mentions that Gwen Stefani agreed to take several songs out of her act when she performed in China, because the government told her to. Say what you want about the Chinese Communist bastards, but they’re paying for her gig, so they can tell her what to do. Or she can cancel the gig.
Oh, and Yes, we are laughing at the Germas. A lot. It’s a change of pace from hating the pompous French.
I think by now everyone is laughing at Bush. I don’t consider myself part of any political party, but I have always noticed that Republicans always seem so defensive over everything to the point of looking ridiculous. I’ve read lots of posts by Adam and he always strikes me as being really defensive, and I realize why Bush got in office in the first place. Its like Republicans could care less about important issues, just because of their party status, they will vote Republican whether the candidates are right or wrong (which I am sure Democrats do the same). I think if our country would just come together and sort out the problems everything would get a lot better. The parties almost remind me of the civil war, with the north and south being separated, rather than together as a whole for this country.
Publius, it’s true what you say about AT&T sponsored the webcast and can censor what they choose. However, it is unbelievably sad and plain wrong that they would censor non-obscene comments against a public figure (the President) because of their ties to a political party and who they want to do favors for them. No one is served by censorship of any kind especially by large corporations who try (unsuccessfully) to keep negative comments from being heard by the masses. Russia anyone?
Also, anyone who continues to rip on the French and Europe in general needs to get out of the country and travel and educate yourself. Your ignorance is an embarrassment for the rest of the country.
No one mentions Gwen because who wants to think we are becoming like those countries who censor someone based on their dress or because against a certain religion’s rules??
If the people in the country are so offended by how a person dresses, they won’t buy the tickets and the person won’t be able to perform. Comments like some of the ones I’ve read here, really make me understand more and more how Karl Rove and others can just herd and brainwash ignorant people in like little sheep. It’s actually pretty scary. I’m not trying to be mean or insulting, at all. I just wish people took the time to get information other then from FOX news, CNN etc. You have the internet, use it. Access to all kinds of on-line newspapers, websites, etc.
