Forget Elizabeth Hasselbeck and Michael Vick PETA has a new war on their hands.

The militant animal right group is taking their endless disapproval of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears to the streets today.

Paparazzi agencies have been alerted to a protest just starting now (noon PT) on Sunset Blvd., where protesters will wear masks of Britney and Paris.

The message: “Shelter dogs are dying and I don’t care.”

as much as Britney and Paris suck as pet owners, I don’t think they should be the whole subject of this protest…….

  2. Jessyka Says:

I don’t think they’re the subject of the protest, just an excuse to call attention to a very important topic. I don’t think most people really understand what you’re supporting when you buy animals from pet shops, and if this makes people get it, then who cares? Call PETA crazy, but they get shit done in the animal rights world.

  3. parissuckssliterally Says:

pet store animals usually have something wrong with them b/c of the damn inbreeding.
My JRT is purebreed, but I rescued her from the woman I used to work for (hahahaha- actually she gave her to me after I left, b/c the dog went into a deep depression w/o me)

  4. coco Says:

can someone explain this situation to me? whats wrong with pets from pet stores…where should you get pets?

  5. she Says:

google ‘Puppy mills’ and you’ll know all about it.

  6. Lucy Says:

PETA and most other animal rights groups protest purchasing pets from a pet store because it encourages the development of horrible (abusive) puppy mills which specialize in “designer” dogs. Now, I would never buy a dog from a pet store. However, some people want a specific type of dog and they shouldn’t be shamed for getting their dogs from professional, loving breeders. When I get my next dog, it’s going to be a King Charles spaniel - and I don’t think they’ve got those lying around the local animal shelter. I’ve had plenty o’shelter dogs before, and they can be lovely - but if you want a specific breed you’re better off going to a breeder, plus being able to check their hereditary health histories is a fabulous added bonus.

the idea is that there are millions and millons of aniamls euthenized each day because of careless owners who don’t spay and neuter or breed solely for the financial benefits. not that i completely disagree with buying an animal in a pet store, but i think its more the fact that people liek britney spears are trying to get these particulare breeds of dogs who are seen more as accessories than as actual pets anyway. having a mutt, of if you are lucky, a purebread from a shelter is a much more humane way of getting a pet. the more people breed, the more it pushes these mixed breed dogs into shelters, and the larger the number of them ending up euthenized becomes. most of these animals have a short time to be available for adoption so going in and saving one is seen as the more humane method. i think peta is just trying to put a face on the idea that people in the media are going against this idea.. just as an example.. because cats can repdroduce so often.. two cats who start off with one litter can actually end up creating a population of over one million cats in four years.. goes to show the importance of spaying and neutering.

  8. Lucy Says:

Spaying and neutering are super important. Here’s my beef with PETA though: both Brit and Paris prefer the tiny chiuahua type dogs. Those are almost NEVER found at shelter (and yes, I do volunteer at one). So, they are supposed to adopt largish mutt dogs that are nothing like the breed they prefer? Because other people are irresponsible/cruel pet owners? Yeah, I’d like to see PETA telling me what type of dog I can let in to my home and heart. Whatever.

  9. only.1.without.herpes Says:

^^^ agreed… it’s cool to bring lite to the cause, but don’t chastize someone who prefers a different breed than is usually at a shelter. IMO

  10. Jessyka Says:

Okay, so yes, it’s hard to find what you want specifically at an animal shelter. But hello, this is the technology era. There are TONS of rescue organizations that specialize in a certain BREED of dog. So instead of trolling the animal shelter, go to your computer find a rescue group for say, chihuahuas or whatever, and then adopt the dog that way. That solves the whole issue of breeding, puppy mills and so forth, PLUS you get what you want. There is no excuse for buying from a pet store.

  11. coco Says:

geese, this all seems a little much. I mean really. but thanks for the explanation

  12. BeJeeBus Says:

Dude, since when are Paris and Britney solely responsible for the wellbeing of every animal in the world? Please. I know they are fucked up addicts who ruin their own lives, but I’m pretty sure they love their pets to death. I’m sick of this vandetta PETA has against everyone who happens to have different opinions than them. I love animals and all of that, but I will never support them EVER. They are the worst organisation I have ever seen and I am horrified by all of the crap they pull. They all deserve to do jailtime ! Bitches!

  13. blake Says:

I don’t blame PETA for this. Paris and Britney are celebrities and have people that look up to them. What’s wrong with getting a dog from the humane society or a shelter? It’s all about status with these celebrities and rich people. So stupid.

  14. me Says:

I don’t think Peta are doing anything wrong - they’re just using Paris & Brit as an example where the other week Britney basically walked into the pet store & left immediately with a new Yorkie - I think Peta just want to make people realise that a dog is a huge decision & not a decision that can be made within 10 mins of being in a store … Also, I don’t for a min believe peta have a problem with buying dogs from accredited breeders if u want a pure bred but they obviously have issue with pet stores which I totally understand … If you look at the rest of Hollywood - Jen Aniston, Sienna Miller, jake Gyllenhall, Jess Biel, Adam Brody …. just to name a few all have mutts from shelters …. Dogs aren’t fashion accessories for most therefore what they look like is not important, so go to a shelter b/c ur basically giving a dog a 2nd chance … if you must have a particular dog then go to a breeder … just don’t treat dogs like fashion accessories like Paris & Britney do … That is why it’s them thats getting targeted by Peta - I don’t really recall any other celebs that tote around small dogs all the time - therefore, they kinda deserve it.

  15. me Says:

Forgot to say … You can rescue many particular breeds … Most breeds usually have a society/club that will have a national website where people post ads/pics trying to re-home their dog due to death/divorce/new baby etc etc … these are all pure breeds but the owners don’t want to give them to a shelter therefore they re-home through the national breed society [or whatever it's called] .. then the owners who usually love their pets & don’t necessarily want to get rid of them can basically screen & choose the new adoptive parents … my friend got her chow chow that way … the owner passed away & had a 2yr old chow pup that the deceased family wanted to re-home - rather than give it to a shelter they placed an ad on the ‘american chow society’ website … this way u get a pure breed & also rescue a dog that would otherwise be heading to the shelter.

  16. BeJeeBus Says:

Yes you CAN rescue them, but they are not fucking obligated to do it because they are celebrities. WTF? Should all regular people get frowned at when they buy dogs in petstores? What’s the problem here? Everyone decides for themselves, and if they had their eyes set on a chihuahua then let them buy the damn dog. You can’t force people to do WHAT YOU WANT. How can you randomely attack people and PROTEST against them for not adopting the right breed of dog??! Damn this turned by stomach!

  17. Stephi Says:

I think a lot of PETA’s protests are for the good of animals but sometimes I really think they are just looking for attention. Fair enough when they want to storm onto runways and protest fur, its disgusting, but to bash people for buying pets from the store rather than a shelter is just silly. Both pets from shelters and from breeders or stores need love and if Paris and Britney are looking after their puppies properly, which it seems like they are to me, then I don’t see the need for this protest other than to get some publicity.

  18. parissuckssliterally Says:

yes, every breed does have a rescue
A really good breeder will not have more than 2 litters a year……..
I agree with you on some points Stephi, but if people would stop buying dogs from pet stores, maybe they’d stop milling out the puppies….the inbreeding has made some very ill dogs.

  19. Anonymous Says:

    Team Irresponsible Pet Owners!

  20. Jessyka Says:

I’m just gonna go ahead and defend PETA by saying that in the grand scheme of things, most people don’t give a crap about animals. The meat industry being as cruel and unusual as it is should tell you that. If people aren’t confronted with the issue in the most extreme way possible, then they’re happy just to go on with their lives and do nothing. If PETA does behave in a radical fashion it’s only to get attention to their cause that they won’t get by the normal methods. They have to be so extreme to get things accomplished. They aren’t trying to FORCE you to do their animal-loving-will or what have you. They’re just trying to get the point across.

And yes, in my opinion, regular people SHOULD be frowned on for buying pet store animals just as famous people should.

  21. lolly Says:

Some people just don’t get it….if people stopped buying pets from stores, then there would be no more mills! it’s the mills that are horrible conditions! there’s other options than shelters, buy from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, just not a STORE! while PETA is awful in many ways, i think it’s great that there’s an organization that is high profile and gets people talking about these issues, good or bad.

  22. Barks Says:

I won’t agree with PETA about anything but I do agree puppy mills are disgusting. BUT are you really teaching the puppy mill operator a lesson by not buying the pet store dog? No, because they’ve already got at least 50% of their money when they “consign” the puppy to the pet store. If someone doesn’t buy that dog and give it a home it’ll be taken somewhere and destroyed, the same as a shelter dog.
    .
If you are TRULY interested in change you need to contact your congress people and demand legislation and regulation of puppy mills!
    .
The last 2 dogs we’ve had we’ve gotten from a local shelter that has a no-kill policy and my daughters get their Girl Scout volunteer hours helping out there during the summer. But it does pull on the heartstrings when you visit the pet store and see those puppies because you know they are doomed if they aren’t adopted.

  23. nikka Says:

PETA are also trying to make people understand that dogs are not merely expensive fashion accessories. Lots of little girls are getting Mommy and Daddy to buy them cute little expensive puppies only to eventually tire of the responsibility. What happens to those dogs then? Why don’t people think about these things in advance?

And PETA often has to go over the top to get media attention. I don’t always agree with their tactics, but I nearly always agree with their message.

  24. Ren Says:

Dogs are like people. There are many different kinds and some of us prefer certain types. Whatever. If you MUST have a certain type of dog go to a reputable breeder or rescue group (they are in every major city). Then spay or neuter that dog because YOU are not a breeder. If you simply love dogs - all types of dogs - (like I do), make sure to visit the most populated humane society or pound in your area and find your next best friend. Then spay or neuter him/her too.

And Barks, you are kidding yourself by saying “you don’t agree with PETA about anything.” Wake up son. You are part of the problem if you don’t see what PETA is trying to accomplish.

Lucy, you are an idiot - people who really NEED to have tiny dogs can go get them at a breeder. There is no need to adopt a larger dog if you don’t want one. Are you high?

Dogs are a responsiblity. You are their sole protector for their entire life. If you don’t believe it, just don’t get a dog.

  25. Janie Says:

Ren - I’m pro-life but don’t agree with protestors showing dead baby fetus to pregnant women. The end does not justify the means. PETA is out of control and they are bullies, no two ways about it. And, unless your like 100, Barks can’t be your son.

  26. Ren Says:

You do mean “and, unless YOU’RE like 100..” right?

I just can’t take anyone seriously who doesn’t even consider grammar in their posts. Pro-LIFE too (as if anyone is anti-life). What a surprise.
