FROM WORLD LEADER TO SUPERMODEL

louis-vuitton-caine.JPG

Former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev is the unlikely new star of Louis Vuitton’s autumn/winter 2007-8 print campaign.

An image shot by Annie Leibovitz depicts the former world leader in a pinstriped suit and overcoat, sitting on the back seat of a limousine, driving along part of the Berlin Wall - with a monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag on the seat beside him.

The objective of such an unconventional ad compaign? The fashion house hopes its new aesthetic will break through to new audiences in China and Russia - who are more familiar with the glitzy side of Vuitton, depicted by the likes of Jennifer Lopez.

Meanwhile, the always stunning Catherine Deneuve, who happens to turn 64 in October, plays the glamorous female counterpart to Gorbachev’s male sophisticate in the new campaign.

Do we love it or hate it?

Catherine looks amazing considering her age …. I think it’s a good idea b/c the Louis Vuitton monogram is very tacky these days … It’s lost it’s appeal due to the amount of fakes & probably due to the rap / hip hop world & that whole bling crap … in reality it’s an extremely old luxury luggage company so they perhaps should go back to their roots - drop the LV monogram on purses etc.. for a while, just keep it on the luggage then hopefully it will rid itself of it’s poor low class, wannabe image …

Love it! Catherine just gets more & more beautiful. Was watching “The Hunger” a few weeks back…holey mackeral she is just mindbogglingly beautiful. She works the elegant-but-bored angle like no-one can!

coming from one of the countries where socialism nearly killed the economics, I have to say he’s one of the biggest politicians of the last century, good score for Vuitton. And a good idea too.
Also, I always found him sympathetic, with his will to dare and try new things whether it led to the courtain fall or modeling :)

I think it’s great for LV to change their tack in order to rejuvenate their reputation as a luxury retailer. Burberry London are doing a similar thing to try to recharge their brand which has suffered from cheap and tacky fakes selling on market stalls. If it was only so easy for Cristal to do the same thing…they’d jump on that bandwagon so fast it’d probably tip over!

Finally! I’ve been waiting for LV to promote what they’re originally famous for, great quality luggage and bags. None of that neon Marc Jacobs crap. I love it.

Its a very interesting and new idea. There’s so much story behind these people rather than just depicting a model we know nothing about

I actually really like it - it’s unusual and interesting, and very well-done.

In response to wtf!….rappers sporting Louis V bags gives the bags a low class image?? Give me a fucking break…so the fuck what you puritan idiot- fakes/real…life goes beyond an effin monogram and if you or rappers want to rate their worth based on a brown bag with LV on it that is their business and yours but please don’t parade bullshit like “rappers and bling give a “high class” bag like LV a lower class or image”…sales are sales in this consumerist world and your ignorance and value system are rather troubling…
