Katie Holmes is all smiles as she returns to her apartment in downtown New York on Tuesday after a matinee performance of her Broadway play.

An hour later, the All My Sons actress emerged with hubby Tom Cruise and daughter Suri and the family headed uptown to see Katie’s evening performance.

Meanwhile, as Katie wraps up her stint on Broadway, it’s Tom who’s getting some love from the critics. Skepticism over his role as Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg has given way to favourable reviews. Germans have been suspicious of Tom playing a national hero, due to his Hollywood image and ties to Scientology, which they view as a cult.

“‘Valkyrie is neither scandalously bad nor the event of the century. Neither is it the action thriller we feared, but it is a well-made and serious film,” said public broadcaster ZDF. “Cruise plays his part decisively, coolly — a solid performance, though he won’t have a sniff at an Oscar.”
