Jennifer Aniston certainly had herself a happy holidays.
Marley & Me, her dog tale with Owen Wilson set records with a whopping $37 million opening weekend in ticket sales. That’s $51.7 million since it opened Christmas Day!!
Ex-husband Brad Pitt didn’t fare as well. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, his romantic fantasy with Cate Blanchett came in third with a not-as-impressive weekend total of $27.2 million.
Meanwhile, despite mixed reviews, Tom Cruise’s World War II saga Valkyrie managed to rake in a respectable $21.5 million at the box office.
Did you manage to catch any of these must-see holiday blockbusters? If so, what did you think?!?

That photo made me LOL. Anyway, yay for Jen! Saw Marley and it was everything I expected.
The star was the dog. Give credit where credit is due.
Owen Wilson and the Dog carried the movie.
Her part could have been done by any generic actress with her eyes closed.
Yay for Jen, I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s not like it flopped, everyone should be happy. Well apart from the loonies that are gonna come out with their bullshit excuses……………
omg..I loved Benjamin Button..what a masterpiece!
Time will prove it’s genius.
It’s worth every secon of the 160 mins!!! I promise you.
Mr, Pitt should win an Oscar for this role. That voice.
It is nice that Jen beat out her ex … and that she also beat out Tom Cruise who everyone thought would be
# 1
We loved Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I’m still in awe of the film.
It has magic, warmth, hope & wisdom.
What a ride.
I will not forget this film..ever
David Fincher & Brad Pitt have done it again.
This time though, they upped their game.
congrats…amazing story telling.
I even wanted to hug my stepmom who I hate.
#4, 6 & 7 all have the same writing style.
we loved Benjamin Button.
Marley was OK but it was the dog & Owen..not aniston
but hey…that Brad & Angie triangle is all she has to go on.
Courtney Cox missed be p-od that she was upstaged by
uglier Aniston LOL
The DOG was the star.
Any celeb could have played second fiddle to Marley and still sold alot of tickets.
Yeah and the DOG beat Brad “douchebag” Pitt…..anything else you wanna say? Post 8, don’t forget number 9.
Here comes the dog excuse there are a lot of dog movies but none made box office history. OMG! YOU LOONIES ARE PATHETIC! BY THE WAY MY FRIEND SAW BENJAMIN BUTTON AND SAID IT WAS 3 HOURS OF BORING.
#13 I went to the movies and people were walking out! If it was that damn good, then why? LOTR was long as hell but I don’t recall people walking out.
yeah you can tell its the same bitter loonie posting over and over poor thing life must really suck for u especially since jennifer aniston made history. clearly jennifer had a big part to do with the sucess of the movie shes the only one who had all the publicity while promoting the movie! you barely heard about the dog or owen wilson.
Nobody walked out when i saw Marley and Me people were laughing and some crying but nobody walked out.
Yeah I meant BB sorry I should have made it clear, but I was replying to post 13.
geez, just let jennifer enjoy her success. What movie came in second?.
Poor owen wilson he got no attention while this movie was being promoted.
What about Valkarie… It made it to # 4… 30 million dollars.. Maybe now Tom can make up for his other flop
last year..!! Thank god now we can see him at the Golden Globes next month gloating about his hit movie..
When it was a MGM and UNITED ARTIST MOVIE…AFTER all the hoopla about how Brad was going to beat
Jen at the box office.. now we can see that no one wants to see a 3 hour movie…
Exactly the loons are going crazy, heads are exploding. They were sure M&M would flop; now the excuses are pouring out. Btw the ONE loon who keeps posting in different names - you are not sly, at least try not to give it away so easily. #14 good example, I don’t think it’s a question of it being too long. If it was brilliant, then would you really even notice how long it was. There are films that have been long, that have made number one, so loonies that one is out!
I love Cate Blanchette, Tariji Henson, and David Fincher however, there is no way I will sit through anything with Stupitt in it no matter how brilliant. I will never believe he has the talent to make me believe he could be anything other than his douchey self. 4, 6, 7, and 9 are probably the same person.
BB 8 Critics Choice noms 5 SAG noms 5 GG noms
Benjamin Butto made more then 27 Mil $ you idiot!
For a 2hr & 40 min film shown in less theaters
and AFI’s top film of ‘08 & numerous prestigious awards..well..
enogh said
But I believe the figures by Mon will be arounbg 39 mil$
sso..correct the 27 mil$ erroneous post FADEDYOUTH
thanks,
film buff
I wouldnt be suprised if you was the same LOON #24
There is NO competion here.
These are 2 way different films.
I’m glad for Jen but I’m also happy for
David Fincher & Brad for creating another memorable
film for future generations.
though..many say it was the dogs & Owen that carried the film.
Glad to see 4 of the 5 new films made good money this holiday. Never on a team anything as that is JUVENILE behavior to the max in my way of thinking. No sane adult would be on a team concept created by a store, Kitson, to sell teeshirts. Saw BenB and BedtimeS and will most likely see Valkyrie, won’t see Marley as I have much loved dogs and don’t want to think of them dying. BTW BB made around $39 Mil according to movie sites, I don’t know where FYouth got it’s ##.
And no for the conspiracy theorists here who appear to believe that any positive comments about BenButton are all from the same person, all I can say it get a life.
Is it really a surprise that a dog movie would do better at Christmas than a 3 hour drama? It’s funny how Aniston fans call everyone else a loonie without realizing how unhinged they sound.
I think people just want to see something lighthearted and funny for the holidays. I like jen thats why i saw marley& me it was good and touching.
Hmm What makes you think that everyone here who is defending M&M is an Aniston fan? I could be the biggest Wilson fan ever. The whole point is that the loonies, said plenty of times that M&M would flop. Now they’re making excuses, for it not flopping and BB coming 3rd. Yes well it shouldn’t have been released on Xmas day then, obviously they thought it would be good enough to make number one.
CONGRATS JEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
America prefers cute THE DOG over humans. Our family saw Marley & Me over the weekend FOR THE DOG - not because of Jennifer Anniston (gimme a break!) She and Owen Wilson were okay but face it… the real star was the furry blonde with four paws and wagging tail. The dog that played Marley was an exceptional actor. No surprise that both the kid’s movies did well over the weekend. We’ll probably see Benjamin Button and Doubt next week - without the children in tow. I’m surprised the Tom Cruise movie did so well. People were expecting it to bomb. I guess the holidays have been good to the movies.
IAW Gabriela that there is NO competition, 2 way different types of films, 2 different ratings, one 90 minutes and one almost 3 hours, one playing on 3400+ screens and the other 2900+ screens, both did very very well. Only fake competition drummed up by tabloids and blogs to snare simpletons which by some of the comments made here they succeeded in doing so.
Happy to see both movies exceed expectations and break records. This is good news for a business that had been having hard times recently. May indicate that more actors will be able to find jobs in this tough economy.
Ooooh, the loonies panties are all in a bunch no?. I think so. jen made box office history this past weekend. WOW!. maybe brad could try again next year.
Why are some people talking about loons? I don’t understand. Is there a movie out about loons or something? I saw Ben Button because I love FSFitzgerald and the movie was great. Never thought this movie would make any money like many forecasters who said it would not, it is kind of artsy and more like an indie, so I for one am extremely happy it has done so well. I predict it will do very well in France where I am from. I have not seen the Marley movie, probably won’t as it is not the type of movie I prefer. But I am glad when any movie makes money as I love the cinema.
Aniston is not a star , people are just intrigued by her pathetic love life, and the fact that she is still milking it for all it’s worth. Like a train wreck , you can’t help but look ….Oh and the media lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvves her drama.
So that corny dog movie beethoven made box office history too? you couldnt pay me to see that but i saw marley and me because of jennifer aniston. Everyone has a different reason for seeing the movie.
Whether or not the two are comparable, theme-wise, time-wise or message-wise - they were competing for the same thing - the Christmas audience. For weeks now, the same day release of M&M and TCCofBB was pitched as a Jen-Brad showdown. Of course, Brad was the bigger, bankable movie star…
Surprise!
Would another ‘generic’ actress have made M&M happen? Um. Not sure. Jen was pretty much the face of the movie through the promotions. The performance of the movie is definitely tied to her appeal, as well as Owen Wilson, the dog, a great story line and well-directed movie.
Clearly, Pitt’s movie is doing decent business, so it is not an unsuccessful movie. It just doesn’t happen to be #1.
For those making statements like the two don’t compare, I must say it sound very much like ‘winning isn’t everything’. And we know who says that!!!
#36 Pathetic love life? Why is it pathetic? When making stupid comments you have to be a bit more specific. Are you one of those from the 60’s who believe women are just baby machines, are only happy when involved in a relationship? Or perhaps you’re just a fool who believes everything you read. You don’t know what is happening behind closed doors, just like I don’t. So your comment is useless.
I am a proud Brad and Angelina fan, and was so happy to see that TCCBB did quite well at the box office, especially as so many said the genre and length of the film meant it would not do well. I resent being called a loon because I support the actors I like. If anyone is a loon it is those of you thinking that there was some type of fight here when there was not. I have never been a Jen fan but don’t have any problem with the success of her movie. Why should I? She appeals to some people and that is their choice. Do I call those of you who are Jen fans names, no I do not, because that is just silliness. I really can’t understand anyone who does not see it as plus for films to have diversity in theatres so that there is something for all to see. Yes I saw TCCBB and will next see Doubt and Rev Road, as these are the types of film that I like.
Scruffy, it was framed that way by tabloids and blogs, gossip sites. Authentic movie blogs and critics saw the competition for #1 movie as between Marley and Bedtime Stories, 2 PG films, with TCCBB, a PG-13 film, to maybe rate a distant 3rd or 4th, no one saw it making much money this holiday season due to its length and type of film. In retrospect the decison to release it on Christmas Day was brilliant as it did 2nd to Marley and upset the applecart of the experts. They had trumpted that Bedtimes Stories would be crowned the top money maker. So yes Marley is #1. That is not in dispute, and congrats are in order. But 4 movies also did well and I really do think that is good for the movie business overall.
Silva you are NOT a loon, just because you are a fan of Brangelina doesn’t make you a loon. You obviously are mature about the whole situation. The people being called loons, are rightfully called that because they worship them to the point of stupidity, I could go on……
If you look at the comments the people being called loons have made, you would understand.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been named the Most Powerful Actors In Hollywood in the 2009 Guinness World Records.
What the fuck has that gotta do with this post #43, trying to prove a point? FAILED
I love it how the brangeloonies said the movie will flop because it’s a JEN MOVie and now that it’s No. 1 they say it the dog’s movie. Always trying to find excuses.
/
And I love that Pitt pic, he looks so old while Jennifer looks so young.
Anon2, I think the term loon could be applied to anyone who goes overboard in putting actors/celebs on pedestals and acting as if they know all about these people from reading whatever tabloids or blogs print. Tabloids and blogs are mainly poisonous, they should be read for their hilarity but not for truth and accuracy. For example look at the “news” screamed yesterday that Tom Brady and GB were engaged, when now today Tom Brady’s dad says it is not true. Yet it is all over the blogs as being a fact. Some people just do not think in my opinion, when they take sides based on dubious information when there is really nothing in dispute. Just as in this thread, FYouth framed this in manner to generate hits and that is for their bread and butter funds. I understand this, but others here do not. I am really just tired of this whole tit for tat about the lives of people not personally known that has dragged on for 4 long years. GTG now.
#44, No, just injecting some frivolity into this craziness. Knew it would bring out the cloaked lurking delusional defenders of the whatever. This whole thread is so illustrative of the frustrated class of women who somehow believe that they were once married to Brad Pitt and that he was swept away from them by a huge wave of a woman four years ago. So few comments as to the films themselves. Very very sad, you know?? Four years wasted on other people’s lives who seem to be living their best lives ever, doing what makes them happy.
Brad looks good to me for a 45 year old man with 6 little active munchkins 7 and under at home. Angie is lucky.
Jen looks good for a 40 year old woman, and she has a hot younger BF.
Both their new films have done great, Jen’s is #1 and Brad’s is #2.
Good news for both.
Who ever would of thought that Valkarie would be # 4 So that Tommy Cruise can have a successful year..!!
Now that Brad and Jen have had their competition..It is nice to see that Jen beat Brad and that Bedtime Stories beat Valkarie and Ben Button Movie.. Brad’s movie came in third..!!
Why do people post as others, multiple times? Change your writing style, at least. And what you say. It was irritating to read the same thing over and over, albeit with minor deviations, for the first several posts. Christ.
.
I’m intrigued by Benjamin Button… but I read the short story by Fitzgerald, and the whole story of BB is supposed to be kind of silly and comedic, considering the premise. It’s fine that this movie did something different with it, but I’m in the same pool as Ebert when he bemoans the futility of the premise– what is learned, what is valued, when everything is futile? This is not a critique against Pitt’s acting though, which has been highly praised.
.
As for Marley & Me… it is, I guess, Jen’s fate to have certain people claim her movies succeeded in spite of her, or failed directly because of her. Come on folks, either she has full influence or none at all… pick one. I haven’t seen either movie, but if I were to go see M & M it’s because I like Wilson, I like Aniston… I think they’re good at comedy, and I also like dogs :o). In any case, I watched His Girl Friday Christmas day. Ah, Cary Grant. Can’t go wrong there.
Okay I couldnt be bothered to read the crazy comments, cause I know there’s a lot of craziness up in there, but I’m just happy for Jen, and it really seems like it’s shaping up to be her year. She has tons of positive attention and she is looking better than even and probably is happier than ever! Good for Brad Pitt too, his movie still had a great opening!
When did it become a competition?

Brava.
“Button” was in 2,988 theaters, for a $9,036 average per screen for the weekend.
“Marley” was in 3,480 theaters, for a $10,632 average per screen for the weekend.
If they were equal it would have been $31.5 million for “Button.” THIS is for a movie that’s over a hour longer than that shlock-fest weepie tear-jerking piece of excrement with Ms. Chin and Mr. Suicide.
Congratulations to Jen~!
I’m so happy for jen make up all the excuses you want she made history this weekend. This has been a great year for her and the beginning of a even better new year!.

You officially care too much. WTF, you actually calculated how much Brad made IF the tickets had cost the exact same and if it was shown in the same amounts of theaters? Don’t you think it’s pretty sad of you? Honestly, be honest. It’s kinda sad. They are both extreeeeemely rich and are both very happy in their lives APART from each other. There’s no reason to hate on a person so much, especially since it’s on the behalf of someone else.
#55 clearly HAS WAY TOO MUCH time on his/her hands.
There was no fight between the movies because they are completely different films aimed at completely different audiences! We’ll see how it goes - you watch, Button will have more staying power. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. (And don’t kid yourselves - if this had been Aniston’s other film, “Management,” it would have flopped. People went to see a movie with a dog at Christmastime. There was never a chance that would flop, no matter WHO was in it.)
Right, so if jessica simpson was the lead actress the film would of made box office history hmmmmm, somehow I don’t think so. Give it a rest already.
Okay, ALMOST anyone. Please, Jessica Simpson could sink even an Oscar-winner. Like I said, look at things in a week and we’ll know. Either way, all Aniston proved is that all she’s good for is feel-good movies with no substance…kinda like her, I guess.
I saw BB - it was long but it didn’t feel like it, and I really enjoyed it. I didn’t want to see M&M ’cause the dog dies and I’m a sucker. Of course there was going to be a “competition” because some people - blogs, fans, tabloids - just can’t imagine that everyone has moved on. It’s sad. People trying to rip each other up over people they’ll never meet, or even know they exist! You guys are vicious for no reason! I don’t get it - these two are in completely difference places in their lives now, they have literally NOTHING in common, so why is there always a “rivalry” or “comparison” in some form or another?
#2 was probably Adam’s movie right? Bedtime Stories? I want to see how well Valkyrie does in the following days, because it did better than I thought it would over Christmas.
Gotta say that I personally think not only is Jennifer Aniston getting way to much credit in general for the hit, but I think it’s pretty insulting to Owen and the rest of the cast “who I haven’t heard mentioned yet……..anywhere.” I mean I just read a major news outlet’s headline that read “Jen Wins The Ex Box Race.” I couldn’t believe it. Brad is the headliner of his movie, Jen is supporting a dog. That’s not an insult, it’s the truth. I aint mad at her, but lets call it what it is in fact “is.”
I SAW BEJAMIN BUTTON IT WAS LONG AND TIRING MOVIE , REALLY LONG, WITH A SO SO STORYLINE AND NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THEIR ACTING SPECIALLY PITT , I DON’T RECOMMEND THAT TO ANYONE UNLESS YOU JUST WANT TO SEE KATE AND PITT THAT’S ALL AND I REGRET SEEING IT, WITH THE MONEY I PAID I COULD HAVE SEEN TOM CRUISES MOVIE INSTEAD I HEARD IT’S ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE, I SAW SEVEN POUND , IT WAS A AWESOME, WILL SMITH WAS FANTASTIC AS ALWAYS I RECOMMEND THAT TO ANYONE AND I SAW MARLEY AND ME AND I’M SOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD I SAW IT , BEAUTIFUL MOVIE GREAT ACTING DONE BY JEN AND OWEN I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO HAS NOT SEEN IT YET, YOU WOULD LOVE IT, IT’S A MOVIE THAT EVERYONE CAN ENJOY AND I’M GOING TO SEE IT AGAIN, TO ANSWER COMMENTS # 2 , THE ONLY REASON I SAW THE MOVIE IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS BECAUSE OF JEN SHE WAS FANTASTIC, I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN IT IF IT WAS ANY BODY ELSE AND I’M SURE IT’S THE SAME FOR PEOPLE WHO SAW THE MOVIE AS WELL , HATERS LIKE YOU ARE SO TRANSPARENT DON’T THINK PEOPLE WOULDN”T NOTICE THAT, GO GET A LIFE YOU LOONIES.
to # 32 tamara , why do you think tom’s movie didn’t do good , it did very well for a movie that shown in 2711 theater compare to kate’s movie benjamin button showing in 2988 theaters , brangloonies are hypcrite they are saying marley and me did better because it was showing in more theaters but when it comes to tom’s movie they forget their own calculations, you loonies really are loonies i recommend you loonies sick help.
“Get a life you loonies” says the person who writes a novel (in capital letters no less!) Thanks for giving money to BB, though!
i’m one of cate Blanchett’s and this is the first time cate’s movie didn’t do well i wonder why i think she shouldn’t have co- star with brad pitt that was a big mistake i hope the next time around she would more carfull in choosing movies.
meant to say one of cate blanchett’s fans
i’m one of cate Blanchett’s fans and this is the first time cate’s movie didn’t do well i wonder why, i think she shouldn’t have co- star with brad pitt that was a big mistake i hope the next time around she would more careful in choosing her next movies.
Lulu……….you really need to do your homework on that one. You’re operating on assumptions based on disliking Brad Pitt. This is actually her 5th highest opening out of all the 30 movies she’s “chosen” to be a part of. This is also the 2nd great movie she’s “chosen” to be a part of with Brad Pitt with Babel being the first. I have a strong feeling Cate would think you a fool.
BB was a wonderful film. Saw it on Christmas day and thought all the performances were worthy of recognition. And Brad was truly marvelous in delivering a very thoughtful and nuanced performance. Also enjoyed the peformances of Taraji P. Henson (Queenie, his mother), Cate Blanchett (his girlfriend Daisy), Tilda Swinton (Elizabeth Abbott) and Jared Harris (Captain Mike). I love films of this caliber and hope it snags a Best Film Oscar at the Academy Awards (it truly deserves it). Would highly recommend it to anyone. And contrary to what Arasto wrote, this film did very well on its opening weekend. Paramount and Warner Brothers have released statements saying they are extremely happy with the strong holiday weekend box office for BB.
Also saw Valkyrie and enjoyed it as well. It’s a great story with a fabulous ensemble cast. In fact, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a Tom Cruise film because the other actors that make up the ensemble are quite prominent in the film. I’d recommend it if you enjoy WWII espionage thrillers with great acting and suspense.
We saw Marley and Me on Christmas Day.It’s a fantastic movie.Kudos to the entire cast and all the adorable Marleys.Jennifer and Owen had amazing chemistry…the movie stayed true to the book and that was a plus.Glad it was number one at the box office.Hope it continues to do well!!
A little info for those that think CCBB was only on 2988 screens.Read this…BOMOJO keeps track of such things!
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opened to a healthy estimated $27 million on close to 4,100 screens at 2,988 locations for a four-day tally of $39 million. The fantastical drama was the sole attempt at a sweeping epic, with its life-spanning tale of a man (Brad Pitt) aging backwards, and its debut was on the high end among comparable titles. The advertising struck a romantic, melancholic and mysterious tone, and its story and scale recalled Forrest Gump (though it didn’t reach Gump’s attendance heights). Distributor Paramount Pictures’ research suggested that 60 percent of the audience was female and 70 percent was over 25 years old.

‘Marley’ Retrieves Box Office Luster Over Christmas
by Brandon Gray
December 28, 2008
After a month of slow business, the box office perked up over Christmas weekend, thanks to the openings of Marley and Me and three other strong contenders that largely appealed to different core audiences. The increase over last weekend was over 125 percent, one of the biggest bumps on record, and the timeframe was the highest-grossing three-day December weekend ever with an estimated $204 million tally (although it didn’t crack the Top Five in terms of attendance).
Marley and Me lapped up an estimated $37 million on approximately 4,400 screens at 3,480 theaters over the weekend, and it broke the Christmas opening day record on Thursday with $14.7 million. Its four-day haul came to $51.7 million, which was a new high for actors Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson in lead roles. The picture scored as the most relatable in the market, mixing the type of relationship comedy that powered past hits like Meet the Parents and Parenthood with the antics and sentiment of raising a dog (the popular Labrador retriever breed in this case). In distributor 20th Century Fox’s research, families and women were the main demographics.

Benjamin Button is a cinematic masterpiece. A definite must-see! I predict it will win a best film Oscar in 2009.
#73 - M&M did play in more theaters than BB. M&M played in 3,480 compared to BB’s 2,988.
Marley and me is a very good movie. I loved it!.
Saw Benjamin Button last night with no expectations. It was pretty good. The performances from the cast were all excellent and hits the right spots. It is an extremely long movie though. I felt people around me collectively shift once every now and then. However, given the nature of the storytelling, it wasn’t really possible to cut any scenes as it would have reduced the effectiveness of the story. I did wish that people talked or walked faster sometimes though. Queenie (mama) steals the movie completely, and the makeup is fantastic.
One of the best movies I’ve seen this year.
I saw both movies , i didn’t like benjamin button it was long and depressing and a fiction movie, didn’t enjoy it at all and i also saw MM, it is a great movie, that you want to see again.
