While the 46-year-old actor appeared in good spirits, new reports suggest that he’s desperately trying to save his new movie and his image as a bankable superstar.
According to a top studio executive, the timing of these films is worrisome for Hollywood: ”I don’t know what people were thinking. Here we are in the worst economic slump since the Great Depression, and Hollywood is flooding the market with all these downer films — at Christmas! Even the good ones, like ‘The Reader’ or ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,’ which may generate critics awards or Oscar nominations, won’t make money.”While Cruise has been criticizing critics who are dissing ”Valkyrie” simply from watching the film’s trailers, a couple of Tinseltown insiders (not critics) who have seen it call the film ”dreadful” and ”laughable — not exactly the adjective you’d want for such a serious subject.”
Whatver PR tricks are up Tom’s sleeve, they appear to be working. He recently landed on Barbara Walters’ coveted 10 Most Fascinating People list. The special airs on Thursday.
