The tennis ace won $1.34 million at the season-ending event, raising her end-of-year career earnings to $21.9 million.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s triumph in becoming the first African-American President has prompted Venus to talk about the sufferings her father had endured in less enlightened times.
Says Miss Williams: “America is a wonderful place. I love my country, and I love living there. I love my passport. But also it’s a country that almost since its beginning, it was supposed to be a place where people were escaping intolerance. It became a country that was really intolerant of different minorities and skin colours. My dad grew up in Louisiana, a place where he was called ‘boy’ and shown no respect. Where he couldn’t say anything. His mother was a poor sharecropper. So I think it’s amazing that America has the opportunity to have someone who is a minority of mixed race or whatever you want to call it. And, hopefully, it will just get more people opportunities and more people to work harder and say ‘yes I can do my best whatever my background is’.”

21 million bucks and ugly and sin. life works in mysterious ways.

Inspiring words from Venus Williams. Clearly the opportunities for minorities she speaks of have been available for decades. Those willing to “work harder” including herself, Oprah and Barack Obama have succeeded.
She has such a beautiful spirit… I love that about her.
her jeans are 3 sizes too small
what a beast, that’s sad, she can’t do much to look better but she has a talent that’s why she’s famous, it’s obviously not because she’s a raging beauty.
Clearly, Venus has achieved tremendous success in this country. So why the fuck is she bitching about what her father did or didn’t have? Good god, I get so tired of people trying to play the victim card, even when it’s crystal fucking clear they’re NOT victims! She lives in the land of opportunity and worked hard and has been more successful than 99% of other Americans. Yet she still wants to bitch and moan. Jesus, I get so tired of this sort of mentality.
just askin………….you need to re-read that. In no size shape or form is Venus “bitching” about anything, Venus shared not an opportunity for you to accuse her of victimhood, but an opportunity for anyone with the sense God gave a rock to see how far this country has come, and had you not been so hellbent and quick to point an accusing finger just maybe you would have picked up on that fact.

Your desire to seek hate and remain ignorant is sad, pathetic, narrowminded, weak, and sadly, the very mindset those like the KKK and the rest like them depend on to keep them going. You’re so quick to jump on anything truthful said about a part of the history of this country as playing the race and/or victim card when it’s you playing the whole deck, You and people like you are the problem not Venus’s words.
You may be right, TheMirror. I may need to re-read that. Perhaps Venus’ quote shouldn’t have triggered my reaction.
But I stand by my sentiments that too often the victim (and I said VICTIM, asswipe–you are the one who said race) card is played by people who have no right to play it. **YOU** are the one who twisted my statements into a racial one. You were so quick to jump all over my and MY statements, yet it’s pretty clear you didn’t fucking read what I had to say and jumped to your own fucking conclusions (which were massively incorrect.) What I said wasn’t about race. Good job, trying to make seem like it was. I’m guessing you’re lugging some pretty huge baggage around, eh? You fucking hypocrite.
Love and respect this chick but what she really needs to embrace is a comb and brush. No excuse for that hair looking as tore up as it does (that’s what hats are for!). And before I start hearing big mouths yap off about black hair, I am black and italian. My hair can turn into a hot-mess is a minute. I’ve learned the miracles of a comb, a brush, some hair cream and, when all else fails, a hat.
I know she isn’t a beauty queen , but DAMN, did you have to use the worst possible picture of her!!!! There were several others that looked much better. You know that’s not right!
Does she not realize that Obama will be just a puppet controlled by corporations.
Their is no USA it will the N.A.U. with a new currency the A.M.E.R.O.
Fuck you just askin’ You are an idiot. This reveals so much about where you’re coming from and how ignorant YOU are. I read this as nothing but a grateful tribute to this country and how FAR we’ve come. One can’t do that without comparing it to what was. I wonder how you would feel if you knew someone you loved and respected more than anything - a father or mother or grandparent - had been subjected to unjust, cruel and hateful treatment? To know that someone you adore was made to feel like trash for something he or she could not control: the color of their skin. How would you feel? I’d be hurt and I’d be furious, and I’d never forget it. How can you forget someone’s history? You desperately need to get out of that Palin school of idiot thinking and become educated. Talking to people who lived through civil rights might do more for your massive lack of information and compassion.
I think that Venus should take a little more care with her appearance but I really don’t understand some of the comments about her talking about how her father grew up. I think the point she was making is look how far we have come as a nation and I frankly don’t see why anyone would argue with that sentiment. It’s also important to point out that when Venus and Serena burst onto the tennis scene, not that long ago, they faced a lot of racism themselves from players, fans, and commentators. She more than anyone knows what it’s like to break through racial barriers (and yes I am aware of Arthur Ashe, Althea Gibson, and Zina Garrison) but she’s affirming that through hard work anything is possible regardless of the haters. Now back to being shallow, Venus since you make so much money, please have someone fix that mess on your head.
Hey anon1bitchfaceasshole:
Again, my comments were in regard to victimhood, not race. If you want to read more into it than that, then you need to knock that huge fucking chip off your shoulder.
Oh, and as for my poor, beloved relations who have been discriminated against, have you ever heard the saying “Dogs and Irish need not apply”? Don’t fucking tell ME about discrimination, bitch.
