ARETHA FRANKLIN: GREATEST SINGER IN ROCK ERA

Aretha Franklin tops Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest singers of the rock era in the magazine’s special issue, out Friday, with four separate covers: Franklin, Elvis Presley (No. 3), John Lennon (No. 5) and Bob Dylan (No. 7).

The list was compiled from a poll of producers, Rolling Stone editors and musicians.

Others in the top 10: Ray Charles (2), Sam Cooke (4), Marvin Gaye (6), Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder and James Brown (8-10).

I have no problem with the list at all!!! I mean Elvis, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Aretha,,,you can’t go wrong. But, this sounds more like the best of soul rather then Rock n’ Roll. Where is Axel Rose???

This list is mostly soul singers. Jann Wenner has his head so far up his own ass he wouldn’t know rock & roll if he fell over it. And Aretha as # 1, please. Her skreeching voice makes my ears bleed. Where are all the real rock singers?

If we’re talking about singers/vocalist then how the hell do John Lennon and Bob Dylan rank so high. I’ve heard cats in heat carry a note better. Why weren’t Steve Perry (Journey) and Pat Benatar higher than them. They could blow those two out of the water vocally. Seems more like a popularity contest. They were great songwriters, but that doesn’t make you a great singer. Michael Bolton is a testament to that.

I liked it when black girls could wear their hair like this and not be told “go get yo hair done”. They really were black and proud. Now if you don’t have a damn morticia weave or some cornrows rippin your scalp off yo hair aint done.lol ps. I wonder what the “queen” Tina Turner has to say about not making the list..

I probably would have put Lennon over Aretha, but I like the list. I can see why some people would think it hasn’t branched out enough into other genres though.

#8…………..Most of the real rock-n-roller’s would kick your ass three ways to sunday if you said that in their presence. You have no idea about music or real musicians to even say some shit like that. Do you even know that Dwayne Allman, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton all have played for her? That Willie Nelson wrote “Nightlife” with her in mind? Do you know that she was Freddie Mercury’s all-time fav singer? Did you know that Pavarotti had to miss the Grammy’s one year and personally asked his friend Aretha to fill in for him?

    You are not worthy

Ah but it’s all a matter of perspective and personal opinion. I think all the lists are right that put up a singer as the best of all time. Favorites come in to play and my favorites are Del Shannon, Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. You all don’t agree, that’s fine but don’t argue too much on Roy Orbison not being #1, ok? And your favorities are right too… according to you. :)
