Tragic news to report: Sen. Barack Obama’s ailing grandmother died today. This the final day of the presidential campaign.
Here’s a statement from Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng:
“It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.“Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.”
Madelyn helped raise Barack from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia. Barack most recently took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her last month.

That’s really sad to hear. I was hoping that she would be able to hold on until the announcement was made whether he was President or not. I bet she was insanely proud of him regardless though, and he seems like the type of person that will do the right thing and honor his grandmother’s legacy. My thoughts are with his family right now, and I hope he sees this as that final push of inspiration so that he can win this election!

She had cancer for quite awhile, and then she fell and broke her hip (they never said she broke her leg, get your information right). At the DNC he mentioned that she was too ill to travel anymore (this was due to the cancer). He took two days off in the final weeks of an intense political contest to go be with her, he talks about her in innumerable speeches, I’m pretty sure that his grief, and his family’s grief, is real. Regardless of what you think of the man it’s in poor taste to disparage his grandmother after her passing.

GB the family. It’s sad in general, but she was the last connection to their mom on top of the possibility of him becoming president. It’s not over till it’s over, but I still know it would have meant the world either way if she were able to be a part of it.
