He’s not “playing the race card”. He’s also not tip-toeing around the tulips with regard to Americans’ view of race and racism.
I believe Isaiah makes a valid point. Hollywood has NEVER been pro-black, and regardless of your thoughts on slavery, racism is still very prevalent in American society and the workforce. And darker-complexioned people get it worse than those with lighter complexions. I’m not saying that in this particular instance he was totally innocent, of course, but I don’t think that he was 100% to blame.
And I also agree with those that say that Anonymous (9:39am) needs to stop talking out of her/his ass because ignorance is never attractive.

anonymous is not a total idiot. it’s true that africans in africa sold slaves to white men as part of the Triangular Trade between europe, africa, and the new world. but still, white men sold black slaves amongst each other and basically treated them like shit all the time. the whole concept of slavery is just disgusting. but for isaiah washington to compare slavery to his getting sacked after starting a bunch of problems behind the scenes of grey’s is ridiculous. he makes himself look like such an idiot. good riddance.

At the end of the day, it was still Washington’s behaviour — at the Golden Globes if nowhere else — that led to his firing. Not to say that racism doesn’t exist in Hollywood or on the GA set, but people don’t like working with hotheads who choke co-workers and spout slurs.
Besides, actors are written off shows ALL the time. Jesus, be a man and suck it up already.

On another note, I really do think that this is a case of ” When everything else fails, bring out the race-card”. Seriously why is he talking about this? This has nothing to do with why he got fired. He was fired because he was being a bigot. Not because of his skincolor. It just really bugs me that things aren’t going his way, and now he decided to go into victim-mode. You will work again, it’s not the end of the world. The more interviews of this kind he does, the more he is alienating (sp) people who might hire him in the future.

Funny how he didn’t feel discriminated against when he was still employed and!! He’s been a castmember for 3 years - did they just all of a sudden start hating dark-skinned black men. And what about the Exec. Producer is a big (full-figured) black woman? Any discrimination there?

I’ve worked in Hollywood on sitcoms and films FOR YEARS - racism and discrimination of ALL KINDS exist there (as it does everywhere) but for him to use it as an excuse to cover up his OWN racist behaviour (let’s not forget that he made homophobic disparaging remarks against one of his co-stars) and inadequacies only underscores his lack respect for others, lack of class and shrinking dignity - THAT’S why he was fired. I think Isaiah Washington is an arrogant self absorbed prick and he shouldn’t be bringing up race at all considering he wouldn’t be in this predicament if not for his bad behavior in the first place. But until you live life in black skin you will not understand what it’s like to have to bite your tongue in the workplace for fear you’ll be branded as an “angry black man/woman” simply for speaking up the same way anybody else would. Why doesn’t anyone ever tell Jews to get over the Holocaust the way they tell blacks to get over slavery and Jim Crow? Could it be that the Germans are responsible for the Holocaust and therefore it’s okay to acknowlege that travesty, but the shame of slavery is placed squarely on the shoulders of America so therefore let’s bury our head in the sand and pretend it never existed? I think its safe to say we’re all reasonably intelligent (except for one but everyone’s already said their bit on that but NONE of what happened to Isiah has anything to do with race. All he’s doing is making relations worse not better by adding to that stereotype that black men never take the blame for their mistakes and just blame it on the white man. He compares himself to Malcom X as if he’s doing something for me but to qoute Ms. Jackson ‘what have you done for me lately?!’.
