When it comes to politics, candidates and family, what is fair game?
Meghan McCain, who has been blogging about her dad’s presidential bid, was on the Today show this morning and told host Meredith Vieira: “… with everything that’s gone on with Bristol Palin (Sarah Palin’s knocked up 17-year-old daughter), I just think privacy is privacy when it comes to family.”
“In this setting, I have chosen to put myself out there. I write a blog. I am actively campaigning, so I am fair game. But a child of 14, 15, a 17-year-old person, who is not actively campaigning, I don’t feel is fair game.”
She added on The View hours later: “If I were to be first daughter; I’d be the most outspoken one ever.”
Our thoughts? Family — fair game or off limits?

I cannot believe that the Republican Party is supposrting someone who doesn’t believe in sex education in schools!!! Also how could the women of the US support someone who believes if a women who has been raped HAS to keep the baby. And to top it all off she has an underage pregnant and unwed daugther at home. hahahahahahahahaha!!!! Silly and Stupid Americans.
I live in Germany and I am shocked that the removal of sex education is a topic of discussion in your elections! All of our childern needed to be educated about sex and safe sex and diseases etc. Perhaps sex education may have even helped Bristol Palin. Also, you would be putting women back 50 years by such policies. Friede!!!
They say having a 17 year old daughter knocked up is no reflection on Palin. What a load of bullshit. It does not say much for her parenting that this has happened. What about her belief that’s its up to the parents to teach their children sex ed? I guess then that Sarah didn’t do such a good job at it, now did she?

She is just living her life.. but her “maverick” mother chose to put her out in the spotlight.. allowing the public to scrutinized the situation b/c of the hypocrisy of Palin’s platform. I don’t think anyone is directly attacking Bristol, I hope not. The problem is when u preach something that obviously didn’t work for you or your family… Palin’s family, UNLIKE thousands of other families, have the finances to overcome this “mistake”… teaching sex education and offering strong programs to combat teen pregnancy by education and accessible programs and assisting young mothers is ESSENTIAL. So the attack is not on Bristol.. it’s on the hypocrisy of Ms. Palin’s platform

also, i was taught sex ed in school…it was very redundant. my parents had already done the job they are supposed to do. later we found out my teacher was a molester. and he killed himself the year after i was in his class.

Her mother brought her into the spotlight. It is no different than any other teenage girl that gets pregnant, except that her mother is a strong conservative, preaching abstinence and yet failed in her own home to teach her conservative values. Hm… How would she fail in her leadership of a country? If you want to be in the political spotlight these days, we look at EVERYTHING to consider you as a person fit to run our country and you need to live your life the way you preach it. She said in a press release that having the baby was “Bristol’s decision” yet she wants to take the right to decide away from every other American female by outlawing abortion. It has nothing to do with sex ed in schools etc, it is all about family values. The Republicans are preaching a machine of values that they don’t even follow. I feel like after this last presidency we have no value of human life, much less family values. We need a strong voice that will give this country back some integrity. Be gone Palin.

…whenever the camera focused on Michelle Shenikqa Obama that perpetual scowl was on her glowering countenance. Contrast that to the serene and loving smiles on the face of Cindy McCain. One glowers in the hate she absorbs from her ministers and friends while the other glows with an inner light of appreciation for all she has been given.
Well over one year ago I was able to sit, watch and listen to an entire Obama stump speech and I was horrified.
Things are not going to “change”, life is not going to be better for any of us unless we slash useless funding of outrageous government expeditures. Obama/Biden are not going to do that - Obama’s socialistic agenda will add trillions of dollars to our annual budget. I truly believe McCain/Palin will cut, cut, cut spending, earmarks/pork barrel expenses, useless government programs - THAT IS WHAT WE NEED - cut expenses -by cutting expenses all of us will ultimately benefit and our country will remain strong. Palin needs to concentrate on one thing - BALANCE OUR BUDGET!!!! Obama’s outrageous campaign budget alone signifies the type of spending we do not want any more - arrogant extravaganza, after extravaganza.
No segment of our society will ultimately benefit from the programs the Dems are suggesting - no segment - but every one of us will ultimately benefit by having realistic government programs - saving money day after day after day. I do not see Obama/Biden as the ones to accomplish this task.

Hey Bea.. proper education with regards to sex is a HEALTH CARE ISSUE.. not parenting. The government’s job is to protect it’s people. not wanting ur child to be EDUCATED about public safety issues and protection b/c of ur religious beliefs does not concur with our ur right to seperation of church and state AND doesn’t solve the problem of millions who are affected by the practicalities and realities of everyday life.

Geez.. you act like schools will have demostration sex classes… if u don’t like the fact that the government is addressing a public health concern by offering sex and planned parenthood education, then home school them or send them to private school.. ha.. that doesn’t even help… most private school people I know are WAY worse than public school.. not everyone is a christian, muslim whatever.. but thousands, no matter what religion they are, seems to be having premarital sex and babies before marraige. Most parents are too embarrassed or ignorant to effectively teach the important information learned in these classes. It would be detrimental to take that away.

I don’t necessarily think there should be universal healthcare. I think that ALL children, however, should have equal access to quality healthcare (mental health included). Children can’t learn when they are undernourished and can’t afford things like glasses.

The government should be involved when it comes to children’s education, health and safety. Crazy, that a concept as fundamental as feeding your damn kids can invite such a politically charged response. BTW, you do realize that the majority of kids in the LA school district where I live are fed, not by their parents, but by the gov’t (i.e taxpayers like me). Again, my original point holds true. Liberals have blurred the line and the Constitution of what individuals are responsible for vs. the gov’t. And this isn’t without consequence. Personal liberty and responsibility are inextricably linked. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t divest citizens of the need to be responsible without infringing on the rights of personal choice and individual freedom. It’s the classic nanny state vs. free state debate always raging between liberals and conservatives. Which one do you think the founding fathers intended?

I’m sorry, she lost me when she said that her family is the only family who knows about war. There are thousands of families in this country that have lost sons and daughters and thousands more who have welcomed home severely injured loved ones. I respect McCain’s service but that doesn’t mean that he’s the only one who knows war. My Stepfather is a Vietnam vet and it pisses me off to no end that this family acts like they are entitled because he was a POW. I don’t understand why no one in the media has asked McCain about the fact that he has one of the lowest voting records when it comes to supporting veterans. Someone please ask him why he voted against the GI Bill, my brothers, one of whom is a marine and the other who is in the Navy, would sure like to know.
