THE VIEW WEIGHS IN ON GRANNY PALIN

Filed under:

After a two-week long hiatus, the girls of The View are back!

Not surprisingly, they had a lot to say today about John McCain’s vice presidential pick, Sarah Palin, particularly on the news of Palin’s teen daughter’s pregnancy.

While Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd were supportive of Palin, Whoopi Goldberg walked a more neutral line, urging that abortion rights are important. As for Barbara Walters, she kept her PC lips shut.

Here are some of the highlights:

Elisabeth: “Now we have a woman… with a ‘real’ vibe … She’s an outstanding woman… a lot of people are energized.”
Sherri: “You tell me what mother cannot come in and run the country after having five kids. I’m so excited about this … I believe she represents a regular American woman …”
Barbara: “If you were going to vote for Hillary, in part because she was a woman, would you automatically transfer your vote to the govenor?”
Elisabeth: “To say those woman would automatically shift to another woman I believe undermines the intelligence of the female vote.”
Whoopi: “What I really hope is that everyone could have the choice to make that decision … to have the child or not have the child. Sarah Palin has a strong family, but every kid that gets pregnant does not have that and sometimes having the child is not the best thing … I hope that this idea … (of) choice stays with us.”

I think this was a huge mistake!!! She just does not have the experience right off the bat. And now with the teen-age pregnancy thing and troopegate…the dems are gonna have a field day. This sucks!

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Why is this a mistake?
    Its not.
She has more background and experience then Obama anyday.
The Dems are trying to say that this baby is her daughters kid………
The Dems are grasping at anything their little feble minds can think of, because she is going to rock the vote!
    ==
Yet, you even state she doesnt have experience…I honestly think you need to research WHAT this lady has done.

  3. She Rides A Harley™ Says:

This wont hurt her a bit - - In fact it shows America that she is a REGUAR JOE.
    Palin is an awesome LADY.
Diff need to research her out more post number one…..This is nothing to worry about.

  4. adam Says:

waiting for the ‘get rid of the tissue’ ‘that’s a part of MY body’ dems to come in.
stupid repubs teaching kids about abstinence. i bet this poor child thought she couldn’t get pregnant if she banged upright and then ate an apple standing on her head.

  5. off the wall Says:

Palin is not a good mother. Her daughter is a knocked up drop-out 17yr old who likes to post pictures of herself online holding alcohol in her hands with her friends. If anyone needed that “choice” it would be her daughter and probably Palin about 5 babies ago.

  6. Anonymous Says:

    Whoopies statement …
ABORTION is not THE choice here.
    How about ADOPTION…..
    She is such an ass.

  7. TheMirror Says:

Bristol and Levi didn’t ask for the spotlight they’ve gotten and I feel bad bout that. It shouldn’t have anything to do with whether or not her mom is fit to be VP. On that note, I do think McCain has been pretty arrogant and dismissive of a vetting process that if it were anyone else there would be hell to pay. We need to leave what essentially a private family issue alone along with the firing of Monegan “alledgedly” because he wouldn’t drop the axe on her ex bro-law. We need to focus on the 527 she utilized, the Stephen connection she denied but it’s now being learned wasn’t the full truth, the earmarks that go against what McCain’s said and what is her position now, and a truckload of items that probably would have been dealt with and all but over had McCain vetted her as fully as would have been expected if it were another candidate. We don’t even know who the team is. I don’t vote party, I vote American and I expected McCain (who I voted for in 2000) to be more honorable than this even if I’ve made my choice already. He’d be the first to say others weren’t playing by the rules if this was his opponent.

  8. Earl the Pearl Says:

She had to get a passport before going to see the troops in kuwait a few months ago!!! That is just embarrassing! Also she has been governor of butt fuck Alaska and only for 19 months. I dont want anyone in a position of leadership who is in her 40’s and just left the country for the first time. Talk about being a gun tooting, uncultured, person! Really poor choice that is just going to blow up more. Also, new evidence has come up as of this morning in regards to Troopergate and miss use of power.

There pics of here (the daughter) downing BOOZE all over the net!!! Not very republican now is it?

  11. adam Says:

i was really pretty happy with the pick but now i am wondering if it’s going to take away from the most scandalous presidential candidate in the history of the country.
a man raised by marxists, mentored by radical marxists, coddled by nation of islamers, empowered by racist marxist black liberationers, cultured by palestinians, taught anti americanism by his education, and enhanced in the most corrupt city in the country.

  15. Me Says:

I guess this will give ‘haters’ a reason to dis Sarah Palin, but I think this just shows character.

When you think about how a LARGE percentage of families and young women handle this situation, you can do nothing but commend the Palin’s for how they seem to be dealing with it.

Not an abortion, not a welfare baby Mama, just the family gathering around to support and take care of “its own.”

And this is part of the essence of what being an American is all about, taking care of our own. Not making excuses and going on the doll.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Did you ALWAYS do everything your parents told you to when you were that age? Were you a virgin when you graduated from high school? Being that you are obviously a liberal, I would say it’s a pretty safe bet that you are 0 for 2 right now. Don’t you remember what it was like when you were growing up as a teenager? You need to realize that teenagers have a mind of their own and are prone to be in a rebellious state at times during those years. Look at how many teens drive without wearing seatbelts and yet that is a topic that has been talked about for many years. Teens tend to think they are invulnerable and that something bad happens to other people but can not happen to them.

And what does the fact that Sarah Palin’s daughter rebelled against her parent’s wishes have to do with how she can stand up to people who are corrupt in government? It also has zero bearing on how she would handle countries that wish to see the U.S. destroyed. Your candidate has no executive experience and almost zero legislative experience - seeing that he voted “present” over 120 times instead of taking a stand on issues.

  17. TheMirror Says:

She has more experience than McCain, Biden and Obama if you’re to attach what the pundits who lean far right is their version of all that’s needed. They’ point to “executive experience” as a PTA leader, a Mayor of a town of 8000, and a state with the population of 500,000. At the same time they fail to acknowledge that neither has McCain garnered any executive expertise. Keep in mind that that’s the *main* criteria that people like George Will hold up as being prepared. The National Guard of Alaska is on record basically stating that her function is that she has no function. She controls no aspect of it and sadly, there are those who still advocate that it still should be in the plus column as showing leadership “even if there isn’t one occasion when she’s had to make a decision involving The National Guard of Alaska.”

She’s a smart, capable, savoy woman and it’s unfortunate that McCain et al have chosen not to fully research her as any other would be. It’s irresponsible to try and take all these pieces and call it a whole when we only know half the story.

  18. Celine Says:

The bottom line for most conservates in this election is:
Morally Straight Sarah Palin is a Breath of Fresh Air.
Conflicted and Confused Obama is Morally and Ethically Repugnant.

I don’t believe Obama because he changes his stated views to fit the political weather.
I don’t trust Obama because he has no credibility after retracting virtually everything said at the beginning of the campaign trail.
I don’t like Obama’s lies about who he and his wife are in their heart of hearts.
I don’t like Obama’s racist attitudes, race card and distain for other races.
I don’t like Obama’s cold and calculating demeanor.
I don’t listen to Obama’s rhetoric anymore because he offers false hope and doesn’t speak his own true words.
I also believe that Obama is very dangerous and will follow in the far left Carter MOS after the election.

Lack of moral, identity and ethical confusion is the one thing that insures I will be voting for McCain-Palin. The choice is clear in my mind.

  19. Kain Says:

John McCain is going to have her step down from the nomination by weeks end. The Troopergate investigation is exploding as we speak as e-mails from Palin have been found and proving abuse of power. This is really bad!!!

  20. MissJanet Says:

I fail to see why the teenage pregnancy of her daugther has anything to do with Mrs. Palins qualitfications as a politican or as a mother. How can we want females in high positions when we don’ forgive them what happens when they can’t be housewifes?

  21. Canadian Eh! Says:

^^^ I just saw something on Canadian news saying that the Mccain team has already (last night) sent a team to Alaska for damage control. The story is breaking that she has abused power since the gentleman she had fired was her former brother in law. This cant be good!!

  22. Anonymous Says:

Obama thinks running a campaign is keen to overseeing a natural disaster as the leader of a town, city, state, or country? Like just about anything with Obama, her experience and his lack of experience has already been exposed. The more the democrats bring up her so called lack of experience, Obama’s lack of experience in any true leadership role. Obama has a huge problem on his hands in order to win this election.

  23. MissJanet Says:

Before Hillary was completely out of the picture, from my outside view Obama had the better chance to win this election. Now, only weeks later, i don’t get any winning vibe from the Democrates anymore. How did McCain win over so much goodwill in such a short time?

  24. Anonymous Says:

^ ^ ………………..the choice is clear to me too; the last thing this country needs is 4 more yrs. of a Republican President….8 yrs. was enough.

  25. MissJanet Says:

^LOL, personally, I think that even 4 years were to many.

  26. . Says:

Regarding “Palin has shown no ability to be in control of her own personal affairs and I don’t want her in control of my life.”

Just because she did not choose the cowardly way out and abort her child does not mean she does not control her “own affairs”. She is brave for choosing that route. And, her daughter, a 17 year old made her own decision to get pregnant. Again, the baby is staying. Controlling affairs does not mean aborting anytime a pregnancy is inconvenient. She is taking responsibility. And she does not have any brothers living in a hut on 1 or 2 dollars a month. Shows that Obama does not “control affairs”. I would not let my flesh and blood live like that.

    ^^^

That’s not true. There are those like yourself who don’t want to accept that there’s not more to Rezko and Ayers and of course what would the world be without conspiracy theorist right? Are you not familier with Carl Rove? Do you not know that if there were something to find it would have been found the moment Obama uttered “I’m running for President?” Do you not know that there are groups whose total goal is to not only bring Obama down, but to do it to the point of stripping him of any chance of a positive legacy? Do you not remember Bill Clinton? Those who didn’t want him in the White House located scandals from so long ago that when they got shoved in the closet the girls had pigtails and braces on.

Obama is one of those politician who they’re going to have to drug and set up a scene where he can’t remember how he got there and even then it will be hard to prove. He does not walk on water, turn it to wine or is infallible but I don’t think or believe there’s anything out there because if it were, Carl Rove and Cheney would have found it long ago.

  28. Republicans OUT! Says:

the republicans have sunk this country into depths never seen before:WAR, ECONOMIC DEPRESSION< TOTAL LACK OF AUTHORITY IN THE GLOBAL ARENA.

Palin will not make all these diseases disappear because she is a nobody and SHE IS A REPUBLICAN: same OLD views, where the so called “big government” is destroyed (TAXES) to give way to corporate (private) corruption (THE GLORIOUS VICE-PRESIDENT CHENEY and his myriad of corporate frauds) .

Republicans know pretty well the power of religion (simple logic where destiny and authority are not to be disrupted, but only when you have a gun) and then use it as the token to fool nearsighted americans.

Educational policies are leaving the USA UNABLE TO COMPETE against other emerging economies (if only people will take a real view of the world), but who knows this? Maybe a 5% of people…Between those the republicans!

Republicans have destroyed the few completive advantages of the USA in the global economy:
The Moral Ground of America after beginning wars for money ONLY (where is the taliban after all the destruction of Afghanistan and iraq?) and economic:MORTGAGE AND BANKING CRISIS!!!

OIL AND WAR are not the basis of an economy or the soul of a country. EDUCATION IS!!!
The republicans have cut all taxes that will go to education and shifted to wars! All this while preaching moralistic views on the bedroom!

    NO MORE REPUBLICANS!

Palin is a nobody! Is McCain such an incapable leader that Palin is his best card?! GOD! Only blind faith in the bible can give sense to this mess republicans call ideology!

  29. LAURIE SMITH Says:

Can’t wait to get her daughter’s boyfriend to the alter.. and forcing him to get
married.. She should of thought of that when she had the chance to use
birth control..and not have the kid.. Maybe now Sarah and Jamie Lynne’s mom
can get together since they both have teenage daughters with babies…

Maybe make it neccessary to have birth control in the schools… instead of
coming up with getting married.. It was her daughter’s decision to have the
baby so why not have it alone ..Because it will be fun to have her daughter
and the father of her child at the election in November..

If the polls are any indication, not only is Obama whose up +6.4, but the congressional Dem’s are up +8. Public op of congress job approvel/direction of country/president is very low but all are subject to change. I honestly expect McCain to close the gap again to the point of it’s anyones guess who’ll win. Once all the non-issues have gotten pushed to the back we’ll finally have a race hopefully based on the real issues and the people will hopefully speak about those things

I like what Earl the Pearl had to say. That speaks VOLUMES as far as I’m concerned.

  32. yikes Says:

Sarah Palin is not qualified to be VP. And she will not get any of the Hillary Clinton votes. Sarah supports Pat Robertson and is against abortion. What democrat would vote for her? NONE!

  33. . Says:

Of course no Dem would vte for Palin.
    She has substance and morals.
    Dems dont

  34. H Says:

If you want to know about Obama’s legislative history, go to his website, he has written a copious amount of legislation and does actually have foreign policy experience. And let’s not forget that both Biden and Obama were constitutional law professors and after eight years of Bush, who has eviscerated the Constitution, it will be nice to have an administration that actually respects the Constitution. Obama was in the state Senate for over 8 years and has been in the US Senate for almost 4, she was a city council member, the mayor of a town of less than 8,000 (where she left a 20 million dollar deficit), and she has been governor for 20 months (where she is currently under investigation for abuse of power). To those who carp on about executive experience, then by your calculations she’s also more qualified than McCain because he has no executive experience either and has never held a job in the public sector (which is odd for a 72 year old man) After he finished in the Navy, his father in law’s money and influence bought him a seat in Congress. This pick says that McCain put politics ahead of the security of this country. He has been arguing for months about the risks and challenges we face as a nation at war and he picks a woman who didn’t even have a passport until a few months ago? He picks a woman to take the spotlight away from Obama’s convention and he hasn’t fully vetted her? That says something about his lack of judgment and why he is not qualified to be President. And as for Sarah Palin and her husband, it is distressing that she would accept the position as running mate knowing that her daughter would be exposed in this way. It shows that she cares more about her career than she does about her daughter’s welfare. She is a young woman and she is beloved by the pro-life, anti-evolution, anti-women’s rights, anti-environmentalists, etc.. and that faction has unfortunately taken over the Republican party. She would have been a viable candidate in the years to come. It’s a shame that she didn’t put her daughter ahead of her own ambition. I guess she and McCain make a good team: both put politics and ambition ahead of the country and their families.

  35. . x . Says:

19 months as governor of a remote city/state doth not presidential material make.

McCain offered her the job within minutes of meeting her. A tad hasty, no? Is this the kind of decision making we need in the White House?

  36. Hmm Says:

You know everyone talks about McCain’s character and his selection puts that at issue. He just hired the guy who savaged his wife back in 2000. You know the guy who started the whisper campaign about Cindy’s drug abuse and stealing of drugs, as well as the rumor about their adopted daughter being the result of an affair. I don’t understand how any loving husband could do that to his wife and daughter. It just goes to show that McCain cares more about winning than anything else including loyalty to his family.

  37. MissJanet Says:

I wonder, how do the Republicans here come to terms with the fact that Palin chose to have a handicapped child only to leave it behind at 4 months age? Children with Down Syndrome need special attention, lots of love, treatment and stable surroundings. How will she give that to Trig when she is campagning or in Washington? Is that the moral of pro-life: get them no matter what, who cares who cares for them? If she is so pro choice, she should be equally pro motherhood, erspecially with a special needs child.

  38. Republicans OUT! Says:

Republicans have made their choice: MORE CORRUPT POLICIES!
Palin, McCain, whomever! they’re republicans! for them 8 YEARS OF DESTROYING AND SACKING the country are not a problem to republicans; “There is no problem in America”, they say!!
WAR, GUNS, BIBLE INSTEAD OF SCIENCE, CORRUPTION! that’s what is on the menu if we let Republicans steal the white house once again!

  39. Hmm Says:

    . x .

You are right on. I have to admit to being a little scared because this goes to his governing style and his judgment. I really am starting to believe that he is too old and lacks the skills necessary to be President.

  40. OBAMA!!! Says:

The McCain team also conveniently forget to mention the economical depression republican policies have brought to the country!

  41. . Says:

Many voters will find it easy to identify with her family’s struggles — a significant advantage in an election where the voting calculus is so unusually and intensely personal.”

I agree. Several Americans will identify with Palin. Especially women who work a career and are raising children of their own.

Palin has an unbelievable heart and passion about her. She is a mixture of Princess Diana, Mother Teresa and Geraldine Ferraro. Kudos to McCain for picking Palin!

I find it interesting how Obama’s supporters were quick to attack, yet, they forgot how Obama’s own mother did not get married until she was 3 months pregnant. They are quick to point fingers against “the One”, but forget about the three fingers pointing right back at them.

When you have democrats who eat their own and attack their very own Clinton/Chelsea, what makes anyone think that they will reserve their vile hearts with regard to Palin’s daughter. Democrats attacked their own women (Hillary / Chelsea), and we are not surprised how they are ready to attack more “white typical” women — especially a typical white woman (Palin) who clings to her “guns and religion”.

The Obama folks have no idea they are walking on thin ice with no solid foundation of their own.

I could be way off… but I tend to think that Palin’s warts are not going to affect the campaign’s chances come November. Yes, people will scrutinize. Yes, the media will have a hey day. Yes, people will wonder. But at the end of the day, I think people will realize that this woman talks the talk AND walks the walk. The Palins, in many ways, are the quintessential, modern-day American family. I also think the majority of folks who are going to rip Palin apart are the folks who were staunchly backing Obama to begin with. Like I said, I could be very wrong here, but I tend to think that so long as Palin holds her own on the issues, that Mainstream Undecided Americans might embrace her as one of their own. I think people will look at all of the candidates and wonder, “Who would best blend with my family at our kitchen table for dinner?” My guess is that a lot of those folks would choose Palin. My heart goes out to Palin and her family for having to deal with the media frenzy. It’s a private family matter and it makes me sad that the world thinks it’s their business. Obama’s response was spot on: this has nothing to do with Palin’s abililty to serve as a potential veep, and it has nothing to do with her accomplishments as governor. Let’s get back to the issues.

H, I just can’t get a handle on why Palin. It’s a question that’s being asked by just as many in their own party albeit off the record accept for a few brave souls because there were just too many more than capable female politicians out there who probably would have truly appealed to the Clinton voters male and female if that was a reason. That leaves the Conservative Christian crowd. McCain has never courted them much, and Yeah, he’s been a friendly to some, not so much to others, and he’s never given the impression until this election to have much use for them either way. The fact that he was willing to go with Ridge or Lieberman should signal that this is about a certain corner of the market so to speak but there’s still more questions than answers and it’s a fair question to ask what is the true motivation. I don’t care how maverick of a move it was thought to be, it’s a move that has some explanining needed especially when it seems even McCain knew little more than we would expect someone should who was choosing a running mate as important as one expected to step in and run our nation. If this was someone else I repeat, this would not have been acceptable at all. No one gives Obama for letting Americans know who his vetting team was, what their process was, taking enough time with each step to thoroughly compile data, interviewing.

Just read this article on the process and it’ll better explain why I think McCain may have done Palin and her family an injustice by presuming unknown mole hill’s wouldn’t dare turn into mountains.

I agree on that one. It has never made sense to me to force a family into existance. I can’t say everyone is unsuccessful at it, but I’ve known some seriously unhappy unions that were created because of a pregancy, and when I read that the young man doesn’t want kids, it scares me.
