HAS EVERYONE HAD AN EATING DISORDER?

Though Kelly always went the route of defending her bigger-than-average-bod (by Hollywood’s ridiculous standards) by saying things like, “I love food far too much” to ever fight with food demons, the pop star in now admitting that she was bulimic for a period of time in high school.
After losing out on a coveted role in the school’s play, Kelly attributed the disappointment to her appearance. “I thought…If I came back and I’m cuter and thinner…then I’ll get the role.” For the next six months Kelly binged and purged, until a friend discovered her secret.
“One of my guy friends caught on to it, and I just felt so ashamed and embarrassed,” she admits. “I literally went cold turkey and snapped out of it.”
Since then Kelly has been determined to accept her body for what it is. “I’ve got a butt, I’m Greek- I can’t help that. And I think it’s good for people to see normal.”
Way to be a good role model for young girls, Kel! You’re a strong little spit-fire who goes after what you want, even if it it’s not the popular opinion. Now let’s get those cancelled concerts rescheduled!

lol, I wouldn’t be surprised. She has always looked like one of those people who used to be fat. She never had the lean/slim look.

Bulimia & anorexia are for lazy people. They should just get off their asses and go work out!

I really don’t have anything bad to say about this chick. I dig her a lot more than most other ‘artists’ out and about. Her voice is amazing and she stands her ground when it comes to music that SHE wrote her damn self. I digs her. I always think of how perfect her song, ‘The Trouble With Love Is’ was in the film Love Actually. I think that is when I really admired her as an artist.

IT’S THE PERFECT SYMPATHY GETTER

EDs are a lot more prominent than people like to think.
and Dranna: fuck off. If you’ve been fortunate enough to NOT develop an ED, then you have no idea what you are talking about.

note to kelly: quitters never win.

I was very hesitant to click on the comments for this post. I just don’t think ED’s are something to make jokes about. They destroy people, and often for the rest of their lives. Luckily there are some on here that are educated enough to not make crass remarks about something like this. Thanks PSL, for having a brain, and a heart.

I think Kelly is a joke. She is just trying to get the attention away from the fact that Clive Davis and almost everyone who has heard her new cd HATE IT and say it sucks. She had had bad PR the past few weeks and wants to now claim an ED for sympathy. It wont change the fact that the girl is nuts. She claims she has never been in love, yet she writes all the songs for the cd, claiming it is about her life the past 2 yrs. Ugh, all the songs are about how her lover done her wrong and how mad she is etc. (gee, how original) Kelly is OVER

As someone who has battled (and recoverd!) an eating disorder in the past, I am not sure that struggling for 6 months and then snapping out of it is considered a full blown eating disorder. I mean, I don’t know what she went through and perhaps I shouldn’t judge but why come out publicly now? It seems the trendy thing to do. Or to be arrested for a DUI.

whatever Arasto. You’re ridiculous. She and Lily Allen are pretty much the same curvy size, yet yesterday you ripped Lily Allen apart, making fun of her “muffin top”…and how you say “Way to go, Kel!” like you actually give a sh*t about supporting the various shapes and sizes of women. I have a feeling you are a woman, and you’re the type that’s our own worst enemy. It’s a shame. No wonder women have eating disorders, because of people like you.

Well, mary, as someone who has heard her new cd and not hated, I can tell you to stfu please, you don’t speak for everyone :o)
Secondly, I don’t doubt she had/has an eating disorder. Honestly, which star in Hollywood does or at least had an ED at one point in their career or life?
There is so much pressure on Hollywood, both young and old, to be thin. Look at Nicole Richie, George Clooney, Carson Daily, Angelina Jolie.. A-listers to D-listers, all thin as sticks and it’s because everyone wants to see it. Regardless of what anyone says. People still by the rag mags that have the pictures of them weighing basically nothing, and they read the gossip columns.. like we are all guilty of doing right now.
She has curves, and a hell of a voice. Isn’t that enough? Or will noone be happy till she too has checked herself into rehab. Seems the only way to be the shit with anyone lately is to take a tribe to good ol’ Betty Ford.
Pathetic really. Don’t you think?

Dranna, lots of anorexic bulimic people DO work out like crazy, EDs have become sort of a trend thing, fad, whatever, but there are a % that have a real body dysmorphic issue. Empress, again, i totally agree with your comment!

and hiedi too. oh, and i’ll wait to hear the album myself, i think a lot of this negative backlash is coming directly from the media, cuz clive has it out for her, and people are letting the media make up their mind for them without listening with an open mind.

arasto…..the only talented one out of american idol?????? carrie underwood can sing like a M.F’er

Anorexic/bulemic people, working out like crazy??? Last I checked, the human body needs nutrients to fuel activity. Without those nutrients-FOOD-there’s no muscle development. Athletes eat more calories before and after intense training than most of you can imagine. Whatever workout anorexic people do, it can’t be very impressive. An hour on a treadmill isn’t something I’d call “working out like crazy”. Most of the ED people consider themselves too fat, and most of the time they ARE too fat, but their chosen method (often inspired by some dumb starlet) is completely fucked up. By exercising you get rid of the pounds much faster than by starving yourself, plus makes you healthier.

I work with people with eating disorders and it’s not too unusual for a person to begin the behaviors suddenly and stop suddenly, sugarjones. Also not everyone struggles with it for years and years.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Dranna, i very much disagree. i myself have gone through phases of eating less than 500 calories a day and working out 4-8 hours a day. was i sick? did i feel like shit? did i pass out a lot? hell yes. now i have a much healthier outlook and eat and work out like a normal person, but it took me a long time to be able to consume those calories without thinking i was going to get fat, even though i’m educated and know in my head it doesn’t make sense.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:38 pm
and by less than 500 calories i really mean more like 200 calories. lots of dill pickles, celery, and diet coke.
June 21st, 2007 at 1:01 pm
also renee zelwiger and calista flockheart come to mind, regarding people with EDs who exercised profusely. butchered the spelling sorry.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Dranna: you have NO IDEA what you are talking about.
Bulimics usually are NOT stick thin, unless they are combining it with starving. Anorexics will come up with the energy to excercise no matter WHAT.
I was bulimic for SEVEN YEARS in my 20’s, and ALWAYS worked out a lot. I still do, but now at least have a healthier attitude about food. Please read and take to heart the testimonies from us posters who have actually gone through this- you may be a little more sympathetic in the future- at least I hope you will, now that you are a little more informed.

Wow, PSL. i’m kind of oddly touched that you would share something so personal. Good for you, I’m glad your doing better. ….. wow who would have thought the comment section would turn into an actual relevant discussion an important issue.

DRANNA SUCKS
June 22nd, 2007 at 4:28 am
dranna, i’m not slagging you out, but i think you should do a bit more research. your comment reflects a pretty common misconception, but you should know that eating disorders are usually coupled with excessive exercising. the underlying obsession is with losing weight, so anorexics and bulimics may stop at nothing to get thinner and thinner, which includes crazy amounts of exercise to accelerate the weight loss.
