OPRAH CRIED HER EYELASHES OFF!

So, how did he do?

First word on Barack Obama’s historic nomination acceptance speech from a bevy of celebrities in attendance was decidedly partisan.

Here are a few highlights:

Fergie: “It was excellent. It was amazing.”

Jessica Alba: “Incredible.”

Daniel Dae Kim of Lost: “What I hope happens is the country doesn’t forget the jubilation and excitement that’s been generated here. And I hope it turns into something that changes the world.”

Oprah: “I cried my eyelashes off. I think it’s the most powerful thing I have ever experienced. He’s not an African-American candidate. He’s a candidate for Americans.”

Everyone get out your crossbows and blunderbuss to help defend America if Obama makes it into the White House!!! On a positive note, we’ll all have free, inefficient health care to take care of our wounds.

Are you suggesting that the annointed one will be running against the Vice presidential candidate? Did someone change the constitution when we weren’t looking? I know that the Dems and Oblama would like to, but there are pretty clear rules against it.

After the last week of McCain ads blasting Oblamas inexperience and poor judgement with the words of Hillary, Biden and Oblama himself, BHO better check his healthcare insurance because he is about to be beaten up badly. I won’t be surprised when he starts crying for getting beaten by a girl on top of it.

Oh, and I wonder if diarrhea mouth Joe will refer to Palin as ‘clean and good-looking, ya know, for a girl’ in his first debate? I can’t wait to see her light him up in the VP debate. This is onr tough CONSERVATIVE women and one I will proudly support.

For the first time in this process, I am actually excited about the McCain campaign.

What makes you two think Obama is any more experienced? At least she has been a Governor. Obamalamadingdong was a community activist and state senator for two years. I smell fear here. You know that many of the 18 million women that voted for Hillary are walking away as I write this.
She is the only one of McCain, Obama and Biden that HAS executive experience. All of them have legislative experience.

In addition to becoming Governor and doing many amazing things in her short run. She has been a very successful Mayor of the fast growing community in AK - Wasilla. On top of the the mayors of AK saw her so highly qualified that they made her President of the AK Conference of Mayors.

You can take that no experience argument and stick it in your arse. Fun she has more experience that the voted most liberal member of congress (in other words the most socialist/communsit member of congress) - Barrack Obama!

Rather than be confident my liberal friends, you should be afraid, you should be very afraid!

Soooo let’s see —-a lot of the above posts appear to be happy about Palin as GOP VP just because she is a woman and for no other reason !!! Does that sound like an intelligent way to select candidates to support??? that’s as bad as picking Obama just because he is black !!!! Joe Biden has vast experience and is a foreign affairs expert which are qualities that complement the Obama campaign. What does Palin really bring to the McCain camp???? Mike, I was impressed with Obama’s speach too, but, any actor can give a good speach, what has he done? Nothing, he has done nothing with his time in the senate. True that it would be dumb for someone to vote for a canidate just because of there race or sex, but, what do you think most of the african americans are doing? I watch BET the last few days and the only thing they were talking about was the fact that he is black and that is why they are voting for him, so they can have a black president, sorry to say but true, and he is only 1/2 black and was raised by white folks! Another note, I was proud of America that we have come from slavary to possibly electing a mixed president that is saying a ton about white people not being as racist. Because there were a ton of white people at the DNC! McCain all the way!

Yeah, McCain has never done anything out of the ordinary in his time in politics. You expected a safe Joe Biden type choice? The choice Obama made of a former foe who was talking trash about him just a few months ago? The choice Obama made to fill the very obvious gaps in his slim resume? Oh yeah, that choice. Who is more scared?
McCain picked someone with Executive experience who had served as Governor (something Obama, Biden, and McCain don’t have).

She wasn’t afraid to stand up to corrupt officials in her own party linked too closely to the oil industry, instituting tough ethics laws.

She’s fought against earmarks and irresponsible spending. She even sold the Alaska government’s private jet to save taxpayer dollars.

Sounds like the character of someone I wouldn’t mind having in the White House.

Seems awful sexist of some of you to look at nothing other than her gender. It’s like you’re saying, “there are no qualified women, you just pick a woman to get Hillary supporters”.

Wow, Democrats are horribly sexist, and they get away with it!

It’s like you don’t believe there are any qualified women in the world to be vice president. The only reason women exist is to get Hillary supporters.

And, unlike Obama and Biden, she HAS executive experience.

How many states has Obama been Governor of? zero.
How many states has Biden been Governor of? zero.

I’m happy McCain picked a LEADER, not a career Lawyer/Legislator.

Right… And she’s a hockey mom, was the mayor of a town of 8,000 people, & now has been Governor of Alaska for only 18 months, NOT 2 yrs, dummy! WOW!! RIGHT, she’s such a leader & “ready to be VP”- so-o great!!! She has NOTHING on Biden w/ his extensive experience in foreign policy (do you guys even know what that is??… duuhhhh!) & in the Senate for yrs… all you McCain supporters better hold on ’cause this will be fun & a no brainer.

HISTORY 101: Republicans said BILL CLINTON was too young & inexperienced before he was elected. He created jobs, the US had the largest surplus in it’s history, strong economy, helped bring peace to the Balkans, the list goes on. Despite his infidelities, he made me proud & many others proud to be an American. The Union also said the same about ABRAHAM LINCOLN & he ended up being one of our best in history!!!
    W. BUSH has ruined the economy, created a total mess in the Middle East, STILL has not caught Bin Laden, widened the gap between rich & poor with a diminishing middle class, gas prices are ridiculous, healthcare costs skyrocketing & STILL no universal plan, funding for education has pretty much ceased (you know about that one first hand, I can tell), unemployment & homelessness rates are high, no new jobs… oh boy, the list also goes on. Do you really think McCain will make it better when he has agreed w/ Bush 90% of the time??? This is a fact. Do some reading. Read about the Revolution, the Civil War & slavery, the KKK, WWII, the rise of the Communist party in this country, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Iraq & Kuwait & Desert Storm, Bin Laden & his family’s connection to the US & the BUSH family, our addiction & co-dependent relationship to Saudi Arabia, our debt to China because we can’t pay for it ourselves… Use your brain, then come back & try to leave some intelligent opinions.

What is so damn wrong about equal pay for women? Is that a really bad thing to want?

Women’s progress being pushed back several decades by the Democrats? Hmm ok …removing a women’s right to exert a choice over her body by overturning Roe V Wade so we can return to draconian back alley abortions….last time I checked women were not property of the state and an egg was a defined human but the Republican party is changing its platform to embrace that mentality and when it does birth control will be a thing of the past as well. So stop having sex She rides a Harley because the Republicans are going to take that choice from you. Hey we all know that abstinence only for grown adults is great! Forget birth control being an option and don’t resort to the faulty logic that women use abortion as a form of birth control and further don’t insult poor women by saying that they get pregnant lots and have lots of abortions. At $500 or more per procedure that is too expensive for the.

Hey wait what was Madeline Albright? Shirley Chislom, Barbara Jordan, oh wait did not FDR choose Francis Perkins as the first female cabinent member? Geraldine Ferraro wait she was the first ever female VP pick in 1984! Way before the Palin selection. Nancy Pelosi first female party leader…oh wait they were all Democrats I can go on and on…

Palin is also up for investigation. Governor Palin is currently under investigation by an independent investigator hired by the legislature to determine if she abused her power when firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Walter Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety and instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he subsequently turned down. The Commisioner serves at the will of the governor, so her right to fire him is not in dispute; but Monegan alleged shortly after his dismissal that it may have been partly due to his reluctance to fire an Alaska State Trooper, Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin’s sister, Molly McCann. In 2006, before Palin was governor, Wooten was briefly suspended for ten days for threatening to kill McCann’s (and Palin’s) father, tasering his 11-year-old stepson (at the stepson’s request), and violating game laws. After a union protest, the suspension was reduced to five days.

Palin replaced Monegan with Chuck Kopp, who had previously been removed from supervision of an employee he had allegedly sexually harassed. Palin knew of Kopp’s alleged sexual harassment before she appointed Kopp.

Hey if you Republicans want a woman - why not Christine Todd Whitman….She will still be solidly party line.

i’m quite concerned that america just isn’t ready for a woman.
i mean, who got suffrage first? blacks (men) or women?
the democratic party of tolerance and racial quotas just refused to elect a woman who actually got more votes than her opponent (like al gore). then, for some reason, the winner of that run-off passed up THAT VERY woman for another man. also, ladies, obama his serious inequities of pay AND employees on his female staff! seriously, if half of america didn’t want to have a woman on the ticket, how can she ever get elected?
i think it’s time we thought more seriously about the glass ceiling and women’s rights to equality.

Harley…get some facts and stop living with FOX NEWS on 24/7. If you are going to post such stupid assertions back them up with facts.

Each year, almost half of all pregnancies among American women are unintended.1 About half of these unplanned pregnancies, 1.3 million each year, are ended by abortion.1,2

There are many myths and misconceptions about who gets abortions, and why. The fact is that the women who have abortions come from all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds. If current rates continue, it is estimated that 35% of all women of reproductive age in America today will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45.3

    Measuring the Incidence of Abortion

The incidence of abortion can be tracked in two different ways. The first is simply to keep a tally of the total number of abortions obtained by women who fall into specified categories. Numbers tracked in this way are usually expressed as a percentage of all abortions provided in a year. Alternatively, the rate of abortion can be measured by calculating the total number of abortions obtained per 1,000 women who make up the total population in each category.

    Age

Women between the ages of 15 and 19 account for about 19% of all abortions; women 20 to 24 account for another 33%; and about 25% of abortions are obtained by women who are 30 or older.4 Calculating abortion rates, older teenagers and young adults have the highest abortion rates, while women younger than 15 and older than 35 have the lowest.4

    Length of Pregnancy

Most abortions (88%) are obtained in the first trimester of pregnancy. In fact, over half of all abortions are obtained within the first 8 weeks. Fewer than 2% occur at 21 weeks or later.5

    Education, Residence, and Income

Of the women obtaining abortions in 2000:

    57% had some college education;
88% were from metropolitan areas; and
    57% percent were low-income.4
    Marital Status

Most women getting abortions (83%) are unmarried; 67% have never married, and 16% are separated, divorced, or widowed.4 Married women are significantly less likely than unmarried women to resolve unintended pregnancies through abortion.6

    Religion

Women who obtain abortions represent every religious affiliation. 13% of abortion patients describe themselves as born-again or Evangelical Christians4; while 22% of U.S. women are Catholic,7 27% of abortion patients say they are Catholics.1

MYTH: Women are using abortion as a method of birth control.

In fact, half of all women getting abortions report that contraception was used during the month they became pregnant.1 Some of these couples had used the method improperly; some had forgotten or neglected to use it on the particular occasion they conceived; and some had used a contraceptive that failed. No contraceptive method prevents pregnancy 100% of the time.

If abortion were used as a primary method of birth control, a typical woman would have at least two or three pregnancies per year - 30 or more during her lifetime. In fact, most women who have abortions have had no previous abortions (52%) or only one previous abortion (26%).5 Considering that most women are fertile for over 30 years, and that birth control is not perfect, the likelihood of having one or two unintended pregnancies is very high.

MYTH: Women have abortions for selfish or frivolous reasons.

The decision to have an abortion is rarely simple. Most women base their decision on several factors, the most common being lack of money and/or unreadiness to start or expand their families due to existing responsibilities. Many feel that the most responsible course of action is to wait until their situation is more suited to childrearing; 66% plan to have children when they are older, financially able to provide necessities for them, and/or in a supportive relationship with a partner so their children will have two parents.8 Others wanted to get pregnant but developed serious medical problems, learned that the fetus had severe abnormalities, or experienced some other personal crisis. About 13,000 women each year have abortions because they have become pregnant as a result of rape or incest.1

MYTH: Women are often forced into having abortions they do not really want.

Some women say that pressure from a husband, partner, or parent was one of several reasons they chose abortion, but only about 1% give that reason as the “most important” one in making their decision.9 Conversely, some women who do not want to continue their pregnancies are pressured to do so by family members, friends, or fear of social stigma. Pre-abortion options counseling is designed to determine whether a woman is fully comfortable with her abortion decision, and if she is not, she is encouraged to wait until she has had a chance to consider her options more fully.

MYTH: Many women come to regret their abortions later.

Research indicates that relief is the most common emotional response following abortion, and that psychological distress appears to be greatest before, rather than after, an abortion.

There are undoubtedly some women who, in hindsight, wish that they had made different choices, and the majority would prefer never to have become pregnant when the circumstances were not right for them. When a wanted pregnancy is ended (for medical reasons, for example) women may experience a sense of loss and grief. As with any major change or decision involving loss, a crisis later in life sometimes leads to a temporary resurfacing of sad feelings surrounding the abortion. Women at risk for poor post-abortion adjustment are those who do not get the support they need, or whose abortion decisions are actively opposed by people who are important to them.10 Learn more about post-abortion issues

    Obama madrassa myth debunked
    By Kim Barker

    Tribune foreign correspondent

    JAKARTA, Indonesia

When Barack Obama was a boy here, he studied for three years at a religious school and prayed four times a day.

It was a Roman Catholic school. There, Obama was registered as student No. 203. “Yes, he prayed, because all the students here had to pray in the Catholic way–`in the name of the Father, [Son] and the Holy Spirit,’ ” recalled Obama’s 1st-grade teacher, Israella Pareira Darmawan.

Attention on U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s childhood in Indonesia has so far focused on whether he was a Muslim and whether one of his schools was a fundamentalist Islamic madrassa.

Although his campaign has denied that Obama was a practicing Muslim, the “Islam” issue is not likely to go away soon for the presidential candidate. Some Americans link the religion with terrorism and see Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, as being an alien place, a world away from the White House.

But initial reports have distorted the reality of the four years Obama spent in Indonesia, from 1967 to 1971. In fact, Obama’s religious upbringing in Indonesia depended more on the conventions of the schools he attended than on any decision by him, his mother or his stepfather. When he was at a Catholic school for three years, he prayed as a Catholic.

When he was at a public school for a year, he learned about Islam.

Obama’s stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, was much more of a free spirit than a devout Muslim, according to former friends and neighbors. And the school described as an Islamic madrassa in media reports actually was a public school, so progressive that teachers wore miniskirts and all students were encouraged to celebrate Christmas.

Interviews with dozens of former classmates, teachers, neighbors and friends show that Obama was not a regular practicing Muslim when he was in Indonesia, despite being listed as a Muslim on the registration form for the Catholic school, Strada Asisia, where he attended 1st through 3rd grades.

At the time, the school most likely registered children based on the religion of their fathers, said Darmawan, Obama’s former teacher. Because Soetoro was a Muslim, Obama was listed as a Muslim, she said.

The enrollment form from the Catholic school, which has been cited as evidence that Obama was a Muslim in Indonesia, also was rife with errors. It listed Obama as an Indonesian, listed his previous school incorrectly and failed to list his mother, Ann, at all.

    Mosque visits rare

Obama and his mother moved from Honolulu to Jakarta to join Soetoro in 1967, when Obama was 6. Here, Obama became “Barry Soetoro.”

In their first neighborhood, Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers, a few neighbors said. But Soetoro usually was too busy working, first for the Indonesian army and later for a Western oil company.

“Sometimes Lolo went to the mosque to pray, but he rarely socialized with people,” said Fermina Katarina Sinaga, Obama’s 3rd-grade teacher at the Catholic school, who lived near the family. “Rarely, Barry went to the mosque with Lolo.”

Zulfan Adi, a former neighborhood playmate of Obama’s who has been cited in news reports as saying Obama regularly attended Friday prayers with Soetoro, told the Tribune he was not certain about that when pressed about his recollections. He only knew Obama for a few months, during 1970, when his family moved to the neighborhood.

Soetoro, who died in 1987, was hardly the image of a pious Muslim, friends and family members say.

His nephew, Sonny Trisulo, 49, said Soetoro always liked women and alcohol. One of his health problems was a failing liver. “He loved drinking, was a smart and warm person, the naughtiest one in the family,” Trisulo recalled.

In his autobiography, Obama said Soetoro followed the same kind of Islam as many Indonesians, “a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths,” the kind of Islam that meant a man could absorb the powers of the animals he ate, such as tigers and snakes.

    Interfaith studies

In late 1970, Obama’s family moved to another neighborhood, and Obama enrolled in Public Elementary School Menteng No. 1, the school depicted by several news outlets as an Islamic madrassa, or boarding school. The school, founded in 1934 as a Dutch school, once catered only to Dutch children and a few elite Indonesians. In 1962 the Dutch handed the school over to the Indonesian government. At the time, the predominantly Muslim public school was considered one of the best in Jakarta.

On a recent visit, a magician performed for the students. The girls wore uniforms of knee-length skirts and no head scarves. Boys and girls shoved each other on the playground. Weekly religious classes are required for all students, whether Muslims, Christians or Hindus, under the government curriculum. A new shiny mosque is in the corner of the courtyard.

“The Muslims learn about Islam, prayer and religious activity,” said Hardi Priyono, the vice principal for curriculum. “And for the Christians, during the religious class, they also have a special room teaching Christianity. It’s always been like that. We are a public school. We have always been a public school.”

When Obama attended 4th grade in 1971, Muslim children spent two hours a week studying Islam, and Christian children spent those two hours learning about the Christian religion.

At holidays, the school made a practice of teaching students about different religions. Students from all religions celebrated Christmas with a Christmas tree and carols. They celebrated the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha by handing out a sacrificed goat to the neighborhood’s needy.

Photographs from the time show teachers in sleeveless dresses. The only woman who wore a head scarf was the Islamic religion teacher.

“I was really trendy, for example, no sleeves, and miniskirts,” recalled Tine Hahiyari, 78, a Protestant who was the school’s headmaster from 1972 to 1989. “When I taught sports, I wore shorts.”

who’s Palin? : a nobody, a puppet, an attempt to use an outsider as a life save, a desperate move!

Typical Republican move, using a woman as token for the same old conservative propposals: ignoring and slashing the right to choose, promoting war instead of diplomacy, cutting taxes to the rich(READ mega CORPORATIONS that take jobs to other countries) and then chopping out chunks of public programs such as education and infrastructure to ship money abroad for BOMBS! yeah Alaska is like the answer to the evil the Bush/Dick Cheney admn brought to both Republican rhetoric and the world! (wtf) Only the weak and the misinformed can see this woman as some sort of “good” for the republicans. It sound like a drop of hypocrisy in the BIG SEA OF HYPOCRISY the republicans call ideology

Mr. Obama could have won the election with Hillary.
Because of Mr. Obama’s choice he has handed the presidency to Mr. Mccain. Mrs. Palin not only helps but will insure a landslide for the Republicans in 08.
Mrs. Palin’s integrity and noble heart will win over millions of americans, even the ones that will not vote for her based on ideoleogy. Hope my predictions don’t offend but inform and bring much needed unity to our great country.
