Capitol Hill is offically the new red carpet!
Folk princess/dogooder Jewel testified in Washington today about youth homelessness — more specifically, her own homelessness. Past studies have found that at least one million American children between 12 and 17 are homeless at some point during the year. And while we wish we could say that Faded Youth Blog would be calling attention to youth homelessness even without the three-time Grammy-nominee, we must hang our heads in shame. Alas, we probably would not.
According to her biography on her website, Jewel was homeless around age 18 while living in San Diego. “A series of unfortunate events led to living in her car and, after it was stolen, borrowing $1000 from a friend to buy a van to live in,†it says.

Gorgeous! But not quite as the gorgeousness of the Simpson sisters!!!!
Now this is one classy dame! A real ritzy player. This is how its done!
Good for her for using her fame to make a difference
lets see now..just HOW LONG can she get away with crying about living in a van down by the river b/c it’s been ten fucking years so far.
Goddamn celebrities. This is worse than Hilary Swank weeping about living in a trailer trash to anyone who will listen. Go out and do some real work for the homeless like actually speaking to them, travel the world and work with projects on it instead of attending a couple of lectures, looking pretty and throwing money at the problem.
Morons have no idea.
People being homeless in America is pathetic. We throw so much money around the world there is no reason for our kids to be living in the streets. Add this to all the children uncared for properly in the foster system and it is enough to make me ashamed to live here. My heart bleeds for these kids but seriously there is not a whole hell of a lot one can do besides everyone helping in their own little part of the country.
this is why I get irritated when people adopt kids and spend so much money helping other countries. We can’t even take care of our OWN.
I knwo everyone’s heart is in a good place, but it is bullshit when we are one of the richest countries in teh world, and have such a rampant homeless problem.
“We can’t even take care of our OWN.” We are people of a world, not just a country. We should be globally responsible. And homeless people don’t need handouts, they need sweeping political reforms what allow for re-entry into the work force and proper psychiatric treatment. I’m sure all of you complaining about celeb charity work dedicate your weekends to volunteer work, right?
Screw homelessness, the most important topic is WTF was Jewel thinking with that hair??
I love Jewel! I think she looks really cute here as well in her little shirt dress and headband. Very classy! She’s such a wonderful artist and you can tell she is truly emotionally connected to everything she sings about, unlike a lot of artists who just aren’t beleivable. Some singers are very good at making songs sound their own but nothing compares to someone singing their own lyrics and really meaning them. Jewel needs a new album soon!
good on her!
WOW. What a body on that one. That’s how it’s done all right!
“We are people of a world, not just a country. We should be globally responsible.” I totally agree with that statement.
and…she looks gorgeous! i love how she still hasn’t fixed her teeth! it looks cute, and gives her character!
i can almost forgive her for that terrible intuition song…almost
Is she ever going to get that snaggletooth fixed?
homelessness has increased in the US even though they tell us the economy is booming. and i hope she doesn’t fix that snaggletooth, that’s part of her identity!
Pin, great comment!
aww, look at her, she’s cute as a button! Let’s give those homeless people whatever they want!
