We already know all about about the long labour and delivery of Matthew McConaughey’s baby boy Levi. But now in an interview on House Call with Sanjay Gupta, airing tomorrow on CNN, he reveals that he and girlfriend Camila Alves also kept the placenta and blood from the umbilical cord blood.
Says the proud new papa: “I don’t know that much about it, I just know it could– I understand it’s a smart thing to do now and we did recycle it and so that is stored. I don’t have any real reasons why — our doctor said it’s a great idea and I suppose hopefully I’ll find out why it’s a great idea later.”
And as for the placenta? “That’s fertile ground, so to speak. So … we’re going to plant — it’s going to be in the orchards and it’s going to bear some wonderful fruit. There’s an aboriginal custom, one of many, but when I was in Australia, they had a placenta tree that was on the river and it was for the women and it was the most fertile land and fertile river and all the placentas of all that tribe, all that clan, whatever aboriginal tribe that was, all the placentas went under that one tree and it was this huge behemoth of just health and strength. And this tree was just growing taller and stronger above the rest of Mother Nature around it. It was gorgeous.”

Exactly how much LSD has he done? We banked our son’s cord blood as well but had NO desire to retain the placenta. I didn’t even want to see it.
My neighbors planted her placenta under a tree in thier yard. I thought my husband was joking when he told me. I just don’t even want to know how they got the placenta home in the first place. Those things are huge sloppy bloody messes that weigh like 9lbs.
My sister had a home birth and after, the midwife took the placenta and started playing with it with her bare hands. I threw up in my mouth and ran from the room. She then suggested my sister ate it. My peer pressure stopped that. Isn’t it technically cannibalism.

putting it in a plastic bag and sticking it in the fridge, isn’t particularly ecologically sound or naturally connected… personally I feel it is irrelevant, fetishistic and slightly bad taste. I think I would hate my parents if they’d eaten my placenta with a nice Merlot or something. This is like collecting all your menstrual blood, snot, semen, spit and tears and sticking it in one place then growing another tree on top of it too….. I find it useless unless it’s survival. Animals and Aboriginals do it for fertilizer and protein cycling. They have to. They are surviving. That is the difference. The only people doing that now are people who try to compete with each other about bizarre things they have done because they have lost a deep sense of real integrity. Why talk about this and not the child ?….. it seems a distraction for something that is missing……like a marriage certificate……….

I’m sorry but I find keeping the bloody cord just plain gross. What’s the point of that? I haven’t heard the Aboriginal tradition before, but umm…has Matthew noticed lately that he’s not Aboriginal? Its not the bloody cord that is kept– rather a medical technician draws the blood from the cord and it is stored by a medical storage facility eg viacord or cbr
i remember watching a show a loooong time ago where a group of people was frying a placenta and see who was willing to eat it. they tried tricking/coaxing a vegetarian into taking a bite but not sure if she did or not. some people took bites like it was no big deal. i never forgot the show because i was pretty grossed out. lol.
there was another celeb i read that saved her placenta, i think it was cindy crawford. to each their own…
