“I find myself in the last bastion of male dominance, and realizing what Hillary Clinton might have realized not long ago: that sexism in the American society is more common than racism, and certainly more acceptable or forgivable. In any case, I think my post and Hillary’s race are important steps in the right direction.”
– CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric claims sexism is more common than racism in an interview in Tel Aviv as she covers Barack Obama.

Everything I ever needed to know was in Star Trek!
First they had a WASP captain, then an educated foreigner, then a black captain and then they managed to create a female captain to much controversity. After that disaster they went back to WASPy. You see what I mean?

I’m a dude and even I agree with her.

Joe, I’ve never met a dude who agreed with that. It’s really encouraging, thank you very much.

It’s a man’s world. Maybe one day the playing field will be leveled, but it doesn’t look like it will happen in my time. Perhaps my granddaughters will be able to see it to fruition, however the recent actions of todays young women seem to be smaking the faces of all the women who have spent their lives trying to change that policy. I am referencing the dumbasses that allow a man to “lovingly refer to them as a bitch” or to have a view like the “lovely” Brooke Hogan just shared on her show in regards to voting, and women in office, or the young ladies that think they need some dumbass boy to talk down to them, and treat them like servants in order to complete them. The feminists of my time, that have paved the way to date, are frustrated and rightfully ashamed of a great portion our young women who have reverted back to “just shut up and be pretty, and Oh, make me a sandwich”. Dumbasses!

I agreed with her, I am a female of course so maybe that’s why. BuT I am ashamed to say that even I sometimes, when I see a female Pilot flying a big jumbo jet, something in me just questioned if she can do this, when if it’s a male pilot I am just like “ok”. Just a quick example.

It’s so true. Sexism is still ok in most circles–even accepted as true. A female president would have changed this country for the better. If men (and sadly women too) won’t openly accept a female doing the same jobs as a male then it has to be forced on them. Only then will they realize women can do all jobs as well as–and some better–then men.
As the bumper sticker says “well-behaved women rarely make history”…

As a black woman I say Katie doesn’t know what she is talking about. It is easy to over look racism when you are a white woman. Because you only have to deal with sexism. I have to deal with both. So if you really care about hearing the truth. I feel racism 1st and sexism 2nd. I’ve worked in settings where I was the only black person in the office. And I’ve worked in settings when I was the only women in the office. Trust me you hear the racist sh*t way before your ideas are belittled because you are a woman. If you want to know the truth go to the source. Not someone on the sidelines or is only in the game half the time.

Dee, I do feel that you have a very good point, that black women get it twice as bad. But sexism affects more people than racism (approx. 50% of the population is women, and about 18% is black), so sexism shouldn’t be pushed aside either.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I’m not picking a fight 4.54. I understand your point and Katie’s point. But you can’t belittle someone else hardship to make your hardship look better. That is all I was trying to say. And to tell you the truth numbers and percentages don’t matter to me. Because if 2% of the population is getting “ism” it’s not a good thing. Just fight the battle on your own merits. Not by saying… well we get treated worst than their do.
BTW- 4.54 I think we just proved you can have a disagreement on a blog without being nasty or potty mouthed.
July 23rd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
look, it’s probably true.
blacks (men) got to vote before women did and men of ALL races CAN find common ground and be sexist…in fact, most traditional cultures often bring sexist ways to the usa…one topic the nazi feminist, ‘let your inner slut out,’ hags have forgotten is that men and women are DIFFERENT…but i agree, the sum of the parts are equal…but we are not all exactly the same.
btw, when were women happier as a whole?
in the 50s or today?
this hooker is looking for ratings. if enough women wanted to watch her as cbs planned, she’d be fine right now as the ’sex in the city movie’ proved.

Dee, you need to wear a burka for a few days. Or get stoned to death because you happened to fall in love with the wrong person. Or undergo clitoral mutilation. Those are horrors that you’ll never even have to comprehend. I sympathize with your plight — and I’m sure it IS a plight, even though I’m a white female and admittedly don’t know what it’s like to be black in this country — but women all over the globe have had it FFFFAAAR worse than you’ll ever know.
July 23rd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Ernestine… please re-read what I wrote. I didn’t knock someone else’s hard road to bring my hardships to the forefront. I was trying to give examples of how it is for today’s AA females in America. You and Katie would get more people to listen to you if you don’t put people down to build yourself up. And I can tell you somethings too. Like not only one month ago. A black teenage boy was tied to a tree and not only was he beaten he was painted white and left there to die. And all of this was done by two of his teenage class mates. Also a black teenage girl was kidnapped by a white family and raped (repeatedly by the 3 males and one female) and beating and burned with cigarettes and made to do some horrific sh*t that she still refuse to talk about today. I didn’t want to go there with this thread. Because I know we all have something to over come in our history and in our lives today. But I am not the kind of person who will stand there and let someone call me out and not response. You could have made your point with out trying to make me feel like a spoiled black female in America. Adam is right about Katie being mad because her show isn’t doing as well as the male news shows in the same time slot. Women didn’t come out in full force to support the only female nightly news host on network tv. As a black female I see both sides. And I was only trying to give my testament to what I know. I didn’t know other women would come out of the wood work to beat me over the head about telling my own truth. Because I am sure you will never know (like me) all of the hellish things you talked about in your post first hand too.
July 23rd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
BTW out of all the comments you choose to pick on you picked mind?! Adam called Katie a “hooker”. And that made you less upset than what I said?! One thing is true women hate other women (per Chris Rock). Because if we would band together and respect all women’s history. And not jump on each other. We would be ruling the world (per Chris Rock).
July 23rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
btw, dee..i also don’t want to go there. but many more whites are violently killed by blacks than the reverse.
and those stories are NEVER told. check out the knoxville stories. i aggressively emailed my local paper and was told by numerous reporters that they ‘knew the story but since the neo nazi’s had taken up the cause, they didn’t want to stooge for them.’
disguesting.
and katie is a well known slut. sorry i called her a hooker.

Dee, I would sincerely hope no one belittles racism just because they’ve experienced sexism. They aren’t mutually exclusive, and as a woman I would hope that all white women would understand that African-American women have it twice as bad. I was sexually harassed by a professor last semester, and that experienced opened my eyes to what’s in store for a woman in the world who wants to work in a non-traditional field. Then I met a young African-American woman who had been wrongfully arrested basically just because she was black (yes, white folks, that sort of thing still happens all the time.) Speaking to her made me realize how much more difficult it must be for an African-American woman who wants to find success in this culture, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for black women. It takes a lot of strength just to make it. I think women of all colors need to form more of a bond; African-Americans frequently join forces to struggle against the injustices they suffer…why haven’t we as women done the same?
July 23rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
And Dee, I too am glad we were able to be civil. That’s an unfortunate rarity on the Internets. Please try to ignore the ignorant white people who have likely never experienced any sort of true discrimination before, and are therefore completely unable to relate to your plight. I really do think it’s plain ignorance and not spite.
July 24th, 2008 at 3:41 am
Anyone walk down the street and watch men of any race blatantly objectify women? Mmmmm hmmm.
Sexism is alive and well! That’s why we are doing a comedy currently in NYC, “feminazi”. We are addressing sexism AND a vicious word used to put women down. Dare ya to go!
July 24th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I didn’t respond to Adam because he’s obviously an idiot, and idiots like him don’t really deserve a response. I responded to you because you’re obviously NOT an idiot. But I don’t really think you paid attention to what I wrote, either. So, you’re welcome to keep thinking that I’m ignorant — I truly don’t care. I would type some sort of response, but I have better things to do. Keep thinking that every white person in America hates you. *shrugs*. I’ll be voting and rooting for Obama this November, and perhaps, four years from now, we won’t even need to have this sort of empty dialogue. Have a nice day.
