The problem is that the descendants of slaves don’t know where they came from. Your BIL can define himself (to some extent) by his cultural heritage, but ppl who descended from slaves can only refer to their skin colour. And more importantly, that’s how *other* ppl define them. Who cares if a black person knows what country in Africa their ancestors came from? The term “insertcountryhere”-American is used to describe the cultural/ethnic backgrounds of ALL Americans who choose to use it.
My father’s side of the family chooses to refer to themselves as Italian-American. Sure, it has been a few generations, but
there is a distinct “Italian-American” culture which differs from other European descended Americans, who also have their own distinct, albeit americanized, culture.

Unfortunately, Taye Diggs made an untrue generalization; not every caucasion has used the “n” word to describe or degrade others. It is fine to state that African Americans have taken control of a word that was meant to be derogatory and assigned new meaning to it. It is fine to state that it is word that now belongs entirely to the black community. It is not fine to generalize and say that “…you called me…for many years…” Own the word, throw it around however you see fit, but DON’T expect everyone else to be comfortable with it.
