FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS OVERRATED IN CHINA

China said they will keep a tighter watch on which foreign artists and performers they allow into the country.

A statement issued on China’s Ministry of Culture’s website yesterday said the country would ban any foreign artist deemed to threaten national sovereignty, and Sharon Stone, Steven Spielberg and Bjork could fit the bill according to THIS report.

I am all for people being able to talk about what they want, but I don’t think China is terrible for doing this. If there was a whole bunch of entertainers coming into America and not just putting down our president (which they all do anyway), but putting down our country and our country’s history, I think that our government would act the same way. Instead of boosting people’s loyalty to their country, it diminishes it, and that’s not a good move no matter what circumstances the country is in.

“I am all for people being able to talk about what they want…”
    .
Except, apparently, when you disagree with what they’re saying…

One of my fave quotes on this: “If you believe in freedom of speech, you believe in freedom of speech for views you don’t like. Goebbels was in favor of freedom of speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you’re in favor of freedom of speech, that means you’re in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise.” - Chomsky

How can China get away with this? Such repression it’s unbelievable…

China gets away with it because they are a sovereign nation and the US, has not attempted to put pressure on their government to force them to change. In fact China has the highest trade status possible in this country. Earlier in the primary, Sen. Obama did call for greater accountability for the Chinese government, particularly in the products they send to the US (you know those toys with lead paint and the tainted food) and idiots on the Right ridiculed him for criticizing the Chinese considering how much of our debt they own. It is also a shame that Bush would actually go to the opening ceremonies in a country whose government routinely commits horrific human rights abuses. Yet, you’ll notice how the Right wing will be silent about this while simultaneously referring to Obama as “Che”.

This is no surprise. Shit! Brad Pitt has been banned from China because of staring in “Seven Years in Tibet”. Google the list, it will surprise you what actors China has banned.
