I think that Elizabeth has an extremely valid point. It should never be okay to use that word, period. Because it is often used as a derogatory remark, like when Jackson said it. The United States still has unsettled race issues an its not just blacks and whites, as you can see Obama isn’t even muslim but the thought of it makes him a less appealing candidate. What about the muslim americans in this country? Not all of them are terrorist, most were even born here, so does that make them any less American than you. I have to say that I completely agree with everything Elisabeth said. I saw this episode today and surprisingly for the first time I agreed with Elizabeth.
First off i am a young black individual, I have really never understand how a black person can use the “N” word and its not ok for a white person to use the word. Yes, I do know the history behind the word but then again we must also realized that this word has lost that old meaning and has now become a part of pop culture. Black people use it towards blacks, White kids use it towards fellow white kids. Now if we are going to say that the word is offensive, which i do believe it is NO one should be using the word period. As Elizabeth was explaining…. Why would someone use or refer to someone of their own race using a name with so much negative history and hurt behind it. Its a double standard in my opinion, this word should not be used by no-one!

I’m an Afrikan and proud of it. I am also a captive of amerikkka. Understand that what Whoopie said about 2 america’s is quite true and correct. I may go so far as to say that there are becoming 3 america’s with the Hispanic population rising. However, due to history, and not only the Civil Rights Movement, amerikkka has never come to terms with it’s race problem. WEB DuBois said “The problem of the 20th century will be the color problem.” He was extremely correct in his statement. However because of the success of the Civil Rights Movement, amerikkka has become integrated without solving the problem of the color line. This country continues to be unfair, racist, unbalance, and prejudiced. Please look at any educational statistic or any statistic on the numbers and how they break down racially. This is where the problem lies; not with the word, but the meaning and the history. And this country will not truly prosper as ONE until more conversations like The View had, happens, and some understanding can come from the hearts of people of European descent.

we shouldn’t forget that the integration of people from different cultural, ethnic backgrounds, etc is an ongoing experiment, if you will. historically, people of differing backgrounds don’t mix easily. yet, in the united states you’ll find probably the best example of integration. i think that begins with the so-called ‘american dream’ philosophy. if a person wants to create a good life, and upstanding life.. a life to feel successful about, it can be done in this country no matter what your skin color, etc.
i certainly don’t want to diminish the fact that people of all sorts of differences/minorities/ethnicities aren’t experiencing some sort of discrimination. but it also doesn’t have to stop them from working hard in life to create the life they desire.. or a better world.
i live in a major u.s. city where most people are busy working hard to create the life they want — no matter what their skin color or ethnicity happens to be. yet, i also live in an area of the city where i get to see ‘thug’ culture everyday. being an intelligent person and not a racist, i just see the reality of this ‘thug’ culture as just one example of how a person can absolve themselves of having ‘responsibility’ in their community and to their community(es). anyone can absolve themselves of that. but in the end they only have themselves (and the failings of their community leaders) to fault. some people have an easier path in life. but many ‘white’ people have had to work hard to make it.. as well as people of other colors.
it’s time to put the ‘old racism’ to rest. and focus on the present racism — which is coming as much from the supposedly oppressed populations — and let people take responsibility for their own shortcomings. there is no other way, the way i see it. the old adage rings true — you want respect, gotta give respect — starting with yourself!

I find it funny that most of you are getting upset because Elizabeth refused to try and understand why the N-word is the way it is. She was wrong. She wanted an easy answer to this, when there isn’t one. They gave her the best answer they could, and then she breaks down in tears. No one was ganging up on her. She just refused to listen to what was being said, and then started to cry because she worked herself up. She was wrong, she needs to grow a thicker skin if she is going to be on this show. She was embarrased because she was acting like a little kid, who couldn’t get her thoughts together, and when Barbara was trying to help her understand, she kept saying she did, when she clearly didn’t. We may all live on this earth, but we do live in different worlds. If that weren’t the case, women would not be holding their purses when a black man/men walk by them, or get all fidgity when they are in an elevator together. Also, no one would be afraid to go into a neighborhood that is primarily african american. It’s easy to say that you understand, but how can anyone understand if we are not willing to listen to each other, and process what is bing said.
ELIZABETH IS NEVER BASHED ON THIS SHOW, SHE GETS TO SAY WHATEVER SHE WANTS JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. The only people that don’t recognize that are the ones that only want to hear what she has to say. I can’t beleive she used tears on the show, its such a typical reaction to get the public’s sympathy. With the level of frustration black people have over constantly being treated like SECOND HAND CITIZENS, no matter how much you try to deny it, they should be the ones in tears.

The “N†Word. You know I feel really bad every time I hear this argument:
“They can use it, then why can’t we?”
Nobody likes to feel deprived, or prevented from doing the things they REALLY want to do. I’m sad for all of you dealing with the frustration that there is a word out here, used freely by others, that you feel you can’t use. So it ends today. I’m giving you permission to use the “N” word. As of today, it is yours to use freely. Tomorrow when you walk in to the office, greet your boss and co-workers with it “What’s up Nigg*rs?”When you answer the phone at work, “Hey Nigg*r, how are you today?” When you stop by the store on the way home, tell the bagboy, “Look Nigg*r, don’t put those cans on top of my eggs!” When you get home greet the kids with “Hey, How are my little Nigg*rs?” When your wife is loading the dishwasher, say “Nigg*r, I can’t wait to get you alone tonight!” Use it, abuse it, let it fly! On the golf course, on the tennis courts, whenever and wherever you feel so moved…It hurts me to think of you walking around frustrated and angry or feeling discriminated against because of this word! However….. do remember, if you see me or someone who looks like me…you might want to think about it for a moment before you use it. This word coming from you happens to have deep and disturbing implications for us that you may not be aware of or appreciate and we wouldn’t want any misunderstandings, now would we? I think Woopie missed an important fact. NO woman could vote until Aug. 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment granted voting rights to American women. Black men were granted that right in 1870 under the radified 15th Amendment. So American women in general, were unable to vote. I agree that we never seem to move forward because we continue to speak of the very ugly American past. However, we far too often associate that ugly past with only the black american heritage. What about the Native American’s, the Irish, The Chinese, the Jewish peoples, etc, etc, etc, All were bared certain rights during building of the great nation. But it seems we primarily remember only one group. Why?

Maybe Zwinky will use it, and learn why it’s not meant to be used freely by any other race. “Anonymous”, you are correct, there are many other races that have gone through some tough times here in america. But I have to disagree with you on some of them. The native americans are the only one’s close to blacks who have had the hardest time in america. The native americans (which I am part native american) had their land stolen, the were bullied, beaten, killed, and some turned into slaves. Blacks/Africans (which I am also part of) did not choose to come here, unlike the Irish, the Chinese, the Jewish, etc., etc., etc., but rather brought here by force to do the labor that the master (whom i’m sure you can figure out who they were) did not want to do, and felt they had every right to force someone else to do. Slaves were captured, or brought from tribes in africa with alcohol (hmmmm, why does that sound familiar) and other goods that they had no access to. Forced aboard ships with no room to move about, and had to stay there where many of them died until they reached land. They were beaten, and sometimes maimed, so that they didn’t run away. Forced to change their name to fit what the master deemed worthy of their kind. The women were raped, and then when they had the babies, they became house N******, which only cause racsim amongs our kind. And even when they were freed, they weren’t free. The only jobs they could get were as janitors because they were not allow to have an education (because we all know a black person with and education is trouble). Forced to ride the back of the bus, forced to drink from seperate water fountains, etc., etc., etc. Life is hard all over, and yes, some races have it hard as well. But here in america, no race has had it as hard as Black, and Native Americans. The N word won’t die, because no matter how much we as black people try to make it endearing to us, it still holds too much pain. When white, black, asain, latin, jewish, etc., etc., etc., can stop using the work for malicious purposes, then we can make progress and actually say that there is a change happening. When you can look at me as a person, and not think the N word, even if you don’t mean to, then that is progress. But as long as you can’t do that, it will still cause hurt.
So there is a reason we primarily remember only one group, and it’s because really no other group has gone through what we have, and still try to hold our head up. Why do you think the reference “40 acres and a mule” is often said. Because after the promise of 40 acres of land, and a mule was broken to the former slaves, they had to pick up and survive on whatever they had. That’s all we are doing, and all we’ve been doing since whe had no rights when we came to this country. And we’re still just trying to close the gap on that.

Any one who thinks its ok for blacks to use the “N†word and not whites is perpetuating segregation. If people keep turning to the past to justify their actions, they will never be able to change the future. As long as people keep separating themselves and believe Blacks and Whites live in different worlds we will never be able to remove racial discrimination from our society.
The reason that white people CAN NOT use the ”n” word is because for too many years it was used as a word to shut us out of the world that we live in “together.” More times than not, it is used by white people as a way to demean black people. I have been around in instances where a white person has grown up around black people and they use that word freely, but only around those closest to him (i.e. other friends that are black, white, asian, hispanic…or whatever). But that same white person who may use it as a term of endearment around their friends, knows when and when not to say that word.
We as a people have taken ownership of the “N” word, turning it from something ugly and demeaning into something more. That’s is what my people have always done…making the best out of the worst. Even back in slavery, when people were hot as hell picking cotton all day long, they sang. They sang joyous songs thanking God that they are still here…(making the best out of the worst possible situation).
As far as living in the same world goes…sorry, sweetie! You’re a little backwards on that one. Until there is no racial discrimination in our society, we will never live in the same world. I come from a upper middle class family where I have never wanted for anything in the world. Yet still, I can’t walk into any store that I would like to and not be followed by their sales associates. I am not a thief, nor have I ever been, but yet I am treated different than my cousin (who happens to be white) when we walk into a store together. As a matter of fact, I don’t even receive the same service as she does when we are together……
So to make a long story short….until you have walked in my people’s shoes, you can’t understand! Do your research and it might help a little!

Whoopie is trying to educate Jesse and the rest of America. Ok, people the N-word was used to degrade and to hurt only black people. As stated by Whoopie, “Black people took the same word and used it towards one another to mean something else. If you never had to deal with the pain or hurt that this N-word caused you or your ancestors then you WILL NOT UNDERSTAND why the N-word meaning changes when used by a black person. Words can build you up or break you down….for centuries the N-word had broken blacks down but this generation has destroyed it’s POWER to break them down. This generation has decided to use that same word and change it’s meaning towards one another. So you see America you should not use the N-word because YOU have not changed it’s mean.
