EVA MENDES DOES ‘INTERVIEW’

The always candid Eva Mendes opens up about her recent rehab stint at Utah’s Cirque Lodge and a whole lot more in the new issue of Interview magazine.
Eva on rehab: “I”m not angry. I’m proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better. This is a life or death situation.”

Eva on racism in the entertainment industry: “What makes it frustrating is when a director or a studio head doesn’t see me for the same part that they’ll see, let’s say, Drew Barrymore for. Drew’s a great friend of mine. But it’s like, ‘No, we want more of an American type of girl.’ And it’s like, America has opened up. I’m an American girl, born and raised.”

Eva on whether she finds being Latin in Hollywood a challenge: “I would never call it a challenge. I think being a woman in Hollywood is a big enough challenge. It really is, man. I don’t want to be one of those people who complain. But the lack of roles out there–it’s unbelievable. I read a lot of scripts. I believe you’ve got to read one that you know you’re not going to do, because you’ve got to educate yourself on what’s out there to make the best decision for you. So it’s challenging being a woman. Then there are other kinds of obstacles that come your way, but there are many times that being Latin has actually helped me, being a Cuban-American has helped me.”

She makes some very valid points. Nice interview. Horrible cover though– it looks like she was punched in both eyes.

I hate that only White folks are considered “American” and everyone else gets labeled by their ethnicity. Eva was born in the States and she IS an American girl.

Yes she is an American girl but due to her looks and ethnicity she could play more exotic roles. If you just looked at her on the screen you could think she was Spanish or Mexican or even Italian and sometimes I guess producers want a clearer stereotype. I’m in no means condoning racism in the industry but hiring someone like Drew Barrymore is a lot different than hiring Eva Mendes. Eva can play a lot of roles that Drew can’t and vice versa, that’s just the way it is. I think she looks very hot on that cover though!

who exactly considers only white folks as americans? white folks like when immigrants and ethnic people say and act like they are americans…
maybe if multiculturalism wasn’t worshipped, more ethnic peoples would consider THEMSELVES american rather than dominican or cuban or somalian or mexican.
seriously, she makes NO valid points….only hot points.
how many blondie nordic types could have played the roles she’s played?
eva, write a screenplay if you can’t find a role or if there aren’t enough roles for latinas, or fcking boring female roles.

About ethnicity: she’s talking about the industry’s standards, not her preferences. The american type is a “blonde cheerleader”… hollywood plays on stereotypes regardless Eva’s existence.
About roles: she says female roles are scare, specially when most complex characters are given to male leasing roles.

STEPHI… you made no sense. Look… latin roles in movies are usually a maid, a cop (sexy one with no real challenge) or a drug addict. The very few GREAT roles out there for latinas are exactly that, few and far between. A true actor is looking for something to challenge their abilities, not playing stereotypes all the time. Maybe she doesn’t want to or can not write a screenplay… not everyone in hollyweird is looking to be a writer or director as they probably shouldn’t. And if any of you have watched a novela ( I do all the time with my abuela ), you would know there is absolutely NO challenge to the overexaggerated parts in those movies. To me, sounds like she was just making a point, not going all SPIKE LEE on everyone. Just making a point…. and your comment sounds as clueless about the real world as George Bush is…
