The presdential wannabe says same-sex couples should only be allowed to enter into legal agreements for insurance and other purposes. But that’s where he draws the line. Allowing gays and lesbians to marry is just simply out of the question.
Here’s what went down.
McCain: “I just believe the unique status of marriage between and man and a woman. And I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue.”Ellen: Mmm-hmm…yeah, I mean, I think that it is looked at — and some people are saying the same — that blacks and women did not have the right to vote. I mean, women just got the right to vote in 1920. Blacks didn’t have the right to vote until 1870 and it just feels like there’s this old way of thinking that we are not all the same. We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same…When someone says, ‘You can have a contract, and you’ll still have insurance, and you’ll get all that,’ it sounds to me like saying, ‘Well, you can sit there, you just can’t sit there.’…It feels like we are not, you know, we aren’t owed the same things and the same wording.”
McCain: “Well, I’ve heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement. And I, along with many, many others, wish you every happiness.”
Ellen: “So, you’ll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you’re saying?”
McCain: “Touche.”

I think we are in a difficult place in society right now. The older generation were brought up to believe that homosexuality was wrong and that it was a sin, it’s very hard to convince them otherwise when they have been brought up with that idea. Our younger generation has been brought up to believe that women should have the same opportunities as men and if in twenty years time the next generation came to us saying that women couldn’t vote or have equal rights we would definately find it hard to adjust to because it’s not what we have been brought up with. I think its fantastic that gay and lesbians are being able to get married and have the same rights as heterosexual couples but we shouldn’t expect older generations to just go along with it. I respect John McCain’s opinion just as much as I respect Ellen’s.
IT’s the majority that counts and hollywood can ram it down our throats , but the truth is democrats and republicans and independents don’t want it and as far as i know we are still a democracy where majority rules….btw hillary is also against gay marriage.

I have many gay friends but I don’t believe in gay marriage which makes for the odd heated discussion around the supper table, I just don’t think it’s comparable to women’s rights or blacks getting the vote, it’s a completely differennt issue.
The 9 judges that overturned the will of the people have just made it a campaign issue that will again appear on the 2008 ballot only to be defeated again and possibly hurting the democrats.

I don’t get what the issue is. A married couple is allowed legal rights and that is what McCain is offering. I disagree as well that marriage should be re-defined. It begs the argument that if all love is equal then there should be no restriction (polygamy, etc.)
well mccain went on the show cause he is not afraid of answering any question where as obama only goes where he can tap dance or get away without answering serious questions, he still won’t answer the gay marriage question but he gets a pass from the media.

Adam, you can thank Bush when the a Democrat is elected. You also had an intelligent and thought out post, but I disagree with most. It is hard to not see Republicans as Bush or wacko Christians etc just like it’s hard to not see ‘liberals’ as the extreme stereotype. But this last administration and Republicans in Congress for the last 8 years have done nothing to help normal U.S. citizens. I’m not talking about hand-outs etc. I have an e-mail alert to see how my Representative (a Republican) and my senators (both Dems) vote on every bill and over and over again I see my Representative voting for business interests and not for common sense things like ways to help normal citizens, environment etc. With this batch and President we would have never had child labor laws put into place or work safety laws because it would ‘hurt business’.
My Republican Representative voted against a bill that would increase safety inspection and protection for workers on trains carrying hazardous materials across the country. Why? Bad for business. Ok……how bad would it be for those hazardous materials to spill or the basic safety of the workers? That’s just one example of many. I know lots of things are tacked onto bills etc and I look at those too. But over and over, Republicans do not seem to be doing anything to help out us.
I think there’s good in both parties and provide a good balance, however, after these last 8 years, the Republican Party really needs to re-evaluate what it really is doing. Liberals are actually Progressives.
I also will never be voting for McCain in a million years, but I do think he handled it well as could be expected actually. And it takes guts to come on a show where you know you’ll be asked this live.
