Spike Lee let it rip at Cannes yesterday, taking jabs at fellow directors Clint Eastwood and the Coen brothers.
Speaking about his World War II drama Miracle at St. Anna, Lee said that, unlike the Coens, he was respectful in the way he portrayed death.
Said Spike at a news conference: “I always treat life and death with respect, but most people don’t. Look, I love the Coen brothers; we all studied at NYU. But they treat life like a joke. Ha ha ha. A joke. It’s like, ‘Look how they killed that guy! Look how blood squirts out the side of his head!’ I see things different than that.”
Spike was also critical of the lack of black actors in Eastwood’s films: “Clint Eastwood made two films about Iwo Jima that ran for more than four hours total, and there was not one Negro actor on the screen,” he said. “If you reporters had any balls you’d ask him why. There’s no way I know why he did that — that was his vision, not mine. But I know it was pointed out to him and that he could have changed it. It’s not like he didn’t know.”

It truly hurts my heart to read these comments and really hear what some think of my race. I am an independent, employed, college educated African American woman with no kids and doing quite well. Yes we do exist and there are alot of us. Not all of us are on welfare or lazy as some of you have expressed. The funny thing is that no race is dominant over the other. We all have our struggles and battles being black, white, asian, latino and so forth. No race is perfect. the country we live in provides us the freedom to speak our minds and isnt that what Spike Lee is doing. He is just bringing recognition to some of the struggles we as black americans deal with on an everyday basis. As badly as I would like to stoop to the level of some people who commented, I choose to take a higher and respectful road. What I meant was that, unfortunately, african-americans sometimes live in poorer areas, which means that their schools (which are almost always locally funded) deliver poorer quality education, even in better areas blacks are given less opportunities by their possibly unintentionally prejudiced teachers, they receive poorer medical care and don’t have the same access as whites to things like rehab, and they have less access to higher education because public school classes are often geared toward white students.

NOW you ARE right about many of the social disparities that you mention, though it seems like you’re trying really hard to play victim and generally have a defeatist attitude. all groups of people that have come to america have been poor for at least a generation. and inner city schools are funded (at least in MN) near or at the top, in fact our health care and education systems are at the world’s top for spending, just not results… ‘unintentionally racist TEACHERS’ ( a liberal group) are more likely to be ‘unintentionally’ prejudiced towards the white students and what a ridiculous point to even bring up as a cause for the issues we’re discussing!?! i actually find it racially offensive of you that you think that’s a common theme in whites. less access to health care is probable but clearly MONEY is the reason and not race. and is that really keeping the masses down? rehab? finally a good one hopefully you’re referring to drug penalties and prison bs. i agree. also, hopefully not really keeping substantial numbers down though! and sorry, but WTF do you mean that ‘public classes are geared towards white students?’ are you saying we’re genetically different or something? (rev wrightish?) can’t figure out how to slice that one so it’s not absurd to me. i’ve personally been denied certain valuable experiences in my life because of being a white male…bet ya didn’t know.
Wow–things are getting rough here !!! Hate to break the news to you Spike but as far as I can determine there were damn few black guys fighting on Iwo Jima. Things were different then and most (but not all) blacks were cooks and orderlys and such (yes there were exceptions but the numbers were very small in proportion). The civil rights movement was still many years in the future in the 1940’s.

Here’s a newsflash for you: I’m white, but I grew up very poor without health insurance and on many occasions, didn’t even have enough food to eat. It sucks and I think it’s important for you to realize that it’s not just blacks in this country that deal with those kinds of problems. Despite my rough childhood, I don’t use that as an excuse to go out and commit crimes. Sure, I could have allowed my depressing circumstances to get the best of me and consequently play the victim but I didn’t. I had to work my ass off in school, 10 times harder than fellow classmates, just so I could get scholarships and grants to pay for college. I have a hard time sympathizing with anyone who tries to say that the reason so many black men are in prison is because of their upbringing… give me a damn break. There’s NEVER an excuse! I’m a firm believer that no matter what the circumstance is, you can make your life better. Even though America is pretty screwed up right now, we still live in the land of opportunity. You may not get rich, but you can significantly improve your life and get out of the ghetto if you actually try. Millions of people have done it.
people are paraoid because there are preachers er i mean race baiters telling uneducated folks that the govet put drug in black neighbor hoods and that AIDS was put in the black community to kill blacks,, all the while enriching themselves off the churches with politics of fear and hating the white man.
