2008 COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes add a splash (ok, maybe a tidal wave) of colour as they hit the red carpet at the Costume Institute Gala in New York City on Monday.

While Katie wore a vintage Giorgio Armani red sequined beaded bustier and full ball gown skirt from the Fall 1993 collection (the shoes are Louboutins), her hubby toned this down in a Giorgio Armani Hand Made-to-Measure midnight blue two-button microfiber tuxedo with midnight blue velvet trim detail on the shawl collar. Tom jazzed things up by rocking a midnight blue vest, a cream silk shirt and cream diagonal striped necktie.

We’re a little affraid to ask….but….our thoughts?

Utter, utter hideousness. Ugliest gown ever, no question.

The gown’s cut and material is thoroughly matronly, the color is beyond garish, it’s too fucking short, and what the fuck is she doing wearing those enormous, nasty, shiny blue clodhoppers? Jeebus Christ, this has got to be the worst ensemble she’s ever worn–and this girl has worn a LOT of crap in her day.

Tom, on the other hand, looks surprisingly decent. I actually like his ensemble.

“just askin’” said it best. Tom is kind of little to be such a big action star–pretty funny really.

It seems like Katie tries so hard to appear older than she really is. Perhaps the age difference in her relationship has something to do with that. The dress is really bad though, and the shoes are even worse.

I have to disagree with some of the comments. I think Katie looks gorgeous! The dress looks really good on her, the shoes are something different that really lifts the outfit and I love her hair and makeup. I think she was going for a bit of a Wonder Woman kind of look, seeing as it is a Superhero theme that all of the other celebs seemed to have ignored.

I actually like the dress. I think it’s flattering, and I don’t mind the length. BUT, I hate the shoes! I understand that wearing them took it to a different level of daring, and it’s a fashion event, but they’re just ugly.

I like the dress — a lot! It is way too short for her, but maybe that was the look she going for. But the shoes … the shoes are just wrong!

I don’t understand all the hate….the dress is gorgeous and so is her face, who cares about the damn shoes?

The dress looks like a costume from one of those dollar-general stores. Cheap, halloweenish. The shoes are beyond hideous, and her overzealous use of the fake n’ bake makes her skin looks quite dirty.

Yep, ‘just askin’ pretty much summed it up. And you made my day at the same time b/c I hadn’t heard ‘clodhoppers’ in forever! lol All I can do when I look at them is say WTF?!?!??!!!

I swear that I have the same shoes, necklace and dress in my kids costume box. Gross. And what’s with the overtan?
There was a time when she turned it out flawlessly at every event, back BC (before Cruise). She should go back to that stylist. She always looks like she’s trying too hard, and looking to upper East side matronly.

Okay, the theme of this party last night was super hero’s and fantasy, she was going for the formal superwoman costume. If you all knew what you were talking about you wouldn’t be making fun of her. I love them together. They appear to be in love with each other, just let it go already and let them enjoy their lives together. They are good people.

Hideous all around. The hair, the dress, the make-up. Tom looks ok.

And yeah, I understand the Superhero theme - the only thing that’s remotely Superhero is the color choice which does sort of look cartoon-ish. Sadly, Katie doesn’t have the colouring to pull off orange (although the dress has been decribed as red, so maybe that’s a flash thing).

Well, the bodice fits her well, but the dress leaves me very confused. “Caution Cone Orange” is a hard color to pull off…let’s add sequins…and an asymetrical waistline…and a bow! Why not a two-tiered ribbon-trimmed skirt? Add some tween necklaces from Claire’s Boutique. And just to finish it off? Plasticized Smurf pumps that look like they came from Fredrick’s of Hollywood’s Day-Glo Tranny line! The tanorexia truly pains me. She is such a beautiful woman. I totally don’t get this! Tom just looks like a groom in bad Gingis Formalwear.

Hideous yet fashionistas are raving because they are trying to resucitate two dying careers. Media hype strikes again.
