Sexy siren Alicia Keys says some crazy things in the upcoming issue of Blender magazine.

While her songs may be about peace and love, her internal thoughts are far from.

First, A.Keys is convinced that rappers Tupac and Biggie Smalls were assassinated as part of the government’s plan “to stop another great black leader from existing.”

Wait — it gets better.

She goes on to say that gangsta rap was also a ploy by the government to “convince black people to kill each other.”

    The only thing that this boils down to is the fact that I thought Alicia Keys was far more intelligent than this, she is clearly living in a fantasy land where violence does not exist unless carefully orchestrated by some government power and yeah to an extent this is true, structural violence and direct violence are inextricably linked but for her to believe that gangster rap was simply about trying to maintain a rep (when it is real and not about bling) then she is mistaken. A lot of early gangsta rappers were talking about the violence that plagued their lives and were not glamourising it they were simply speaking the truth.

    Alicia Keys does make sense. There are many reasons why. It is easy to dismiss someone based on your own ignorance and then you can anaylze it and see where she is coming from.

    1. Who owns the record labels? A lot of what we see today is not authentic, it is simply media generated and cookie cutter. Many record labels purposely put out certain types of music. Music is a create influencer. Therefore when she says that gangsta rap was a “ploy” she is saying that it was used sensationalized, promoted and manufactured as a form of manipulation. In this case, to get black youth to act out violently and think that it is cool and acceptable.

    Various institutions in this country which includes media, government etc…have promoted certain ideologies and identities in order to directly affect human behavior and thinking. It is done to maintain a certain social order.

    I am in here with you guys and I read your comments, they fall directly in line with this idea. Some of what you are saying is based on stereotypes, cultural depictions and certain social constructions that have been deeply indoctrinated in our society.

    When you are dealing with young people in particular, you are dealing with impressionable minds. When someone sensationalizes and promotes a certain culture, music and way of living in the media of people like “themselves” (I use quotes because it is merely constructs that have been created and not authentic depictions), they take on that role in search for identity. This need for identity is big when it comes to black youth because blacks in this country have been stripped of culture, history, pride and unity after what has been done to them.

    The same thing that occured with “gangsta rap” occured with “blaxploitation” films of the 1970s.

    2. I love Tupac and Biggie is from my neck of the woods, Brooklyn. I remember when they died. The whole East coast/West coast feud was fueled by the media. It was promoted. It ended up deadly!!! I remember when Louis Farrakhan brought them together to tell them to stop the violence. Both their murders are still unsolved. Many have suspected government involvement somewhere. When someone says government, it can mean the police, FBI (who have covered up many of their own atrocities…whomever). This is wacky. There is history behind why some feel like this. They did the same things with the Black Panthers back in the 60s and 70s along with other black movements with Cointelpro. They did this to stop these black movements and the emergence of “militant” black leaders. There is also what has been defined as the “hip hop police” who have been caught framing rappers and trying to cause feuds. QD3, Quincy Jones’ son, has a documentary on this. You guys should see it.

    For you guys who laugh at the fact of her saying “black leaders”. Please stop!! I am not too sure about Biggie. However I believe that she was refering to Tupac Shakur whose mother was a former Black Panther. He has fascinated a lot of people during his life and after his death. Many felt that if he lived, he would have turned into a positive force.

    You guys should read some of what scholars have to say about Tupac Shakur. Pretty interesting stuff. He definitely has become in a way a “legend” due to his life and death for many.
