ELLEN GETS SERIOUS

Posted Thursday, February 28th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

On a show set to air tomorrow, Ellen Degeneres breaks down in front of her audience when she talks about the recent headline of a 15-year-old boy who was killed for being gay.

Lawrence King was shot in the head at the E.O. Green School in Oxnard, CA , reportedly for asking a fellow classmate to be his Valentine.

As Ellen shares her story, the pain and shock paint her face like an artist’s brush.

Too sad.

Too sad.. nobody should be killed or hurt for being themselves… RIP Larry.

  2. VictorAtomic Says:

very sad event…and sad to know there are still areas in this country where you can be killed for being who you are.

  3. pillbox Says:

Good for you for getting political, Ellen. This called for it. Bless you, Larry, and your family.

VictorAtomic…”there are still areas in this country”, help me out here, where are areas in this country that are safe?

I dont understand how in this day and age people feel that its ok to treat others differently because of their sexual orientation, i myself am straight and yet i go to mardi gras, gay nightclubs and gay rallies, I believe that we all need to treat each other as we would like to be treated. R.I.P Larry i hope your in a better place now.

I really just don’t understand how in 2008 it is still acceptable to some people to hate others for being who they are. Are we so insecure in ourselves that we have to perpetuate hatred? It breaks my heart that this fear and hatred are touching children who are so young. Whether or not you like Ellen, you have to champion the fact that she decided to speak out on this issue. She is right–we need to change this country. Life is way to short to spend it hating others.

BTW, Mac, that is a good point. I think there are people all over the country who hate. I was shocked when I looked at the hate groups map published by the Southern Poverty Law Center. I thought we were much more progressive than we truly seem to be. Check out the map for yourself, but, be forewarned, it is very unsettling to see how much hatred still resides in this country.

I am sitting here choked up beyond belief. My best friend and man of honour at my wedding is gay, and to think of something like that ever happening to him would rip out my heart. I love him for who he is, not what he is. The fact that he is gay does not define him as a person, nor should it. He is happy, funny as hell, so full of life and a great person to be around. Much, like I am sure Larry was.
I agree 100% with Ellen and offer nothing but praise to her for not being shy to shine a bigger light on the topic and situation. It is a problem, and all problems can be fixed. Arrogance and insensitivity runs wild in the world, and it’s sickening.
This is all too familliar, however. I recall many years ago on the Jenny Jones show about a male who came onto the show to inform a close male friend of his that he had a crush on him. Only to have said crush shoot the male once they both returned to their hometown.
It’s disgusting, and the fact that other people who witness the hate crimes don’t speak up and offer support is just as disgusting.
I will never sit back and watch as someone is made fun of, regardless the reason. It is petty and childish.
Alot of us need to grow up, and fast.

Oh we need some tissues to share Shantelle…I’m choked up too. This is just such a tragic thing that happened and something that I’m sure could be prevented if people’s attitudes changed. I feel like the older generation are still against homosexuality and I can’t see a lot of them changing their opinion as that was the way they were brought up…but there our generation can be the start of turning all that around and creating a better, equal future. There is nothing wrong with being gay, nobody should be judged let alone killed for their sexual preference. It’s a private issue that like religion cannot purely define a person. I think Ellen spoke really well and I’m really glad she spoke out about this. She really is a great role model for everybody. My heart goes out to Larry’s family and to Brandon and his family as I’m sure they are dealing with a lot as well.

ridiculously sad! and ellen’s words were so refreshing in heated times like these. i’d like to know more about the a-hole murderer and how it was determined to be a hate crime too.

there is a lot of hatred around…here’s the fbi stats from 06….

Civil society is the result of a consensus of all of us that agree to elave in peace.
Beasts are not part of the consensus…that’s why is important to be aware of the beasts

  11. KT Says:

And it is even sadder that this is my first time hearing about this tragic story. Why does not media report THIS stuff all over? Why there are people cut off from Idol the first ones I see on my yahoo page and not a face of that little boy. This is true - this whole system just sucks.

  12. jake Says:

I agree KT, why isn’t this on the media reports? All I hear about is the Cutts and Jensen cases 24/7, why can’t they through this in?
It is horrible, and kudos to Ellen for talking about it. That poor boy.

  13. margarita Says:

for real news you can always go to http://www.democracynow.org. I heard about this yesterday morning.

  14. pixielynh Says:

Democracy Now is an AMAZING news website. You won’t find any fluff and you will find up to date local and global current issues that your normal “news” representatives don’t have the guts to share.

Kudos Ellen and FYB for speaking up on inequality.

  15. Megz Says:
