Clad in head-to-toe black, first-time director Madonna causes a fan frenzy as she arrives for the 58th annual Berlinale Film Festival premiere of her new flick, Filth and Wisdom, on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, critics are having a field day with her directorial debut. Here are some highlights:
- “Not much filth and precious little wisdom”
- “A good humoured, averagely amateurish vanity project”- The film “ragged, uneven and potholed with some dire dialogue”
- “Madonna has made a movie and it is utter trash — pseudo psychology, cheap make-up, bad lighting and a hell of a lot of scenes shot without rehearsal”
- “If you take her body out of her directing, then the film is nothing more than a picturesque little walk in the park. Just in the same way that her last tour was nothing more than a folkloric stab at subculture”
- This woman directs like a virgin
Ouch!! I guess Madge’s greatest foray in film is and will always be Body of Evidence.

The most success she had in film was Desperately Seeking Susan and then a few years later with Evita. Unless you’re being funny, Arasto, Body of Evidence was a dud when it came out.
She also got good reviews. It’s very easy to only post quotes from negative critics who seem to make it a personal attack on Madonna. It was to be predicted that they would rip her apart no matter what. I mean, she could’ve directed “Schindler’s List” or “Forrest Gump” and they would still rip it apart.
ITs called teh tall poppy syndrome. As if she cares really. On her way to another billion I am sure…..and she loos great!!!!
What kills me is the quotes from the critics, they are sooo lame! Comparing it to her last tour (she didn’t direct it btw!!!), and throwing in Like A Virgin in another. They are really lame.
They must be from London critics.
I admire her for stretching her capabilities, even if unsuccessfully. But I must add that the cheek cutlets are absolutely hideous. What was she thinking?
a) remember, she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for Evita…not too shabby
b) Her last tour was the most successful tour of all time…by a solo female artist
GORGEOUS
