Natalie Cole has waged war against Grammy “it” girl Amy Winehouse.

The recovering crack addict (Cole) says she doesn’t think that the other recovering crack addict (Winehouse) should have taken home any Grammys last night.

“This is about discipline and hard work, and you don’t get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded,” Cole told People.

As for her picks for Grammy gold? Rihanna and Beyonce. “You can tell how hard they work, they’re great people, their heart is in the right place.”

What an idiotic comment. Amy received the award for her work, not as any sort of condoning of “bad behavior.” And if we are to start stripping musicians of awards just because they are addicted to various substances, or behave badly, then we might as well cancel all awards and awards shows altogether. Unless you want to reward nothing more than the banality that is Beyonce and Rhianna.

If Rihanna has swept the awards and Kid Rock said that Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift were more deserving, SHIT WOULD HIT THE FAN!!!

Since the roles are reversed, nothing will come of Natalie Cole’s retarded statement.

I don’t agree with Cole at all but what I don’t understand is, why all the sympathy for Amy. Britney dosen’t get any sympathy and she has a mental illness. Amy chose to do crack and chose for her life to spiral out of control. I don’t feel no sympathy for Amy because it’s quite different. Back to the topic, Cole is an idioit.

Enter RACE CARD? What?? I don’t think the Grammys should be about good behavior (they’re not even about good music, let’s face it), but I don’t think it’s fair to inject racism into this.

Natalie is just a bitter, washed-up has-been. She’s just pissed off that having a famous father didn’t automatically grant her a successful career and longevity in the public eye. Poor, poor miserable bitch–guess someone just a little pissy that she wasn’t asked to perform at the Grammys this year, eh?

My, shitty attitudes are running rampant over the Grammys. Or is perhaps all this posturing, pissing, whining, moaning, and bitching merely “keeping it real”?

don’t get me wrong..i felt somewhat like …kind sad for her when she got it…because she look so surprise..like …”wow …you still love me even if i dont love me?”…she wanted to cry or she did …i dont know ….but i felt sad for her…because shes a great artist…but how can you not love yourself..when you see “the world loves you”…your getting a award when you’ve just finished (it seems like it) putting something that can kill you ..can make you not really “be there”?? when a moment like that you should be.

and this isn’t about race so stop.

Not only was Natalie a crack addict, she’s an admitted crackwhore meaning she gave $5 blowjobs for crack. So you think she would be sympathetic to somebody going through hard times. Despite Amy’s troubles, her CD was the best CD out last year, bar none. I think Natalie is a has-been looking for some easy PR and now she has it. Bitch needs to pick up the crackpipe and shut the fuck up.

No I completely see where she is coming from. It’s really sending the wrong message out to people that you can be totally drugged out of your mind and still be rewarded and have a successful career. Amy Winehouse was talented when she made her record, but I doubt she’s got that in her anymore. I don’t think her follow up album will be anywhere near as good as this one, due to the fact that she can hardly even perform properly anymore. Her bahavious is just disguting and she’s certainly no role model. The fact that she has openly done drugs and not been in trouble at all for it is ridiculous to me, and by giving her all these awards its not going to make her see she’s got problems at all. She probably doesn’t even remember winning them, which is sad.

Back to Black was an amazing album, and Amy is a phenominal singer. What does her personal life have to do with what is undeniably a great album? I mean Amy has enough natural consequences that come with drug addiction, and losing her life and her amazing gifts is what she may have coming…why trivialize that by bringing an award into it? Addicts aren’t completely good or bad…they deserve good where its earned, and bad where its earned as well. If Amy doesn’t stay sober it ain’t gonna be because someone gave her a few Grammy’s. Shes either got the desire to do the work or she doesnt. Natalie Cole maybe has more room to speak than most, but her motives seem off.

Oh Stephi … you’re such a preaching retard - get over yourself.

Race card - Agreed! C’mon … Rihanna & Beyonce? Original? Hell NO! They don’t write their own material & are just typical R&B crap!

And anyone who compared Amy to Britney - Geez! Amy doesn’t have kids - thats the big difference. Amy has sane parents who so nothing but support her & are always by her side & who are clearly stricken with their daughters addictions.

& no, she wasn’t high when she performed. she’s in rehab & had nurses with her at the venue, & her parents & brother … as if they’re gonna stand by & watch her snort a few lines or smoke some crack before she went live to the grammys .. remember by the time she performed live it was like 4am in London - 8 hour time difference btw london & l.a.

Jesus H. Freaking Christ, Stephi, I would have expected a LOT better logic and reasoning from you of all people!

Amy is being rewarded for her brilliant body of work–her album Back to Black, and the songs therein. NOTHING MORE, and certainly nothing less! She is being given this reward independent of her personal life and her addictions. Her Grammys are NOT rewards for being a crack addict!

Her addictions, her brushes with the law–none of these are or were relevant in judging her musical talent.

WTF is the matter with you people who think that someone’s personal life should be spotless before receiving accolades for their professional achievements? Where the fuck were you when the Stones got all their Grammys for their work? They’re all a bunch of addicts and druggies, too, but I don’t hear anyone screaming that they shouldn’t have gotten their Grammys!

I hope all of you who somehow think that Amy’s addiction negates her achievements are denied your next raises because you don’t keep your cars and homes tidy enough. Because it would be the same damn sort of thing.

    Natalie Cole is right.

I think Amy Winehouse is amazing. Amazing voice and album or not, she has spent the last year standing up fans, bailing mid shows, or forgetting her songs on stage. Defend her to fans who waited hours, traveled miles, lost money or are still waiting for refunds. She refused to get help, mocked people’s concern, and displayed a blatant disregard of her fans.

There is no race card here.

Rhianna (who is half white) and Beyonce (who is of mixed creole heritage) do work hard and are professional. However they are not good comparisons to Amy as far as who deserves an Grammy. Rhianna and Beyonce are great recording artists and packaged entertainers but they are not singers and somgwriters.

I have a better example. Shawn Colvin worked her ass off for decades, the total consumate artist and professional–now she desserved her Grammy.

Also hats off to Herbie Hancock for winning Album of the year for a Jazz album. There would be no rock n roll without Jazz. And there would be no Amy Winehouse without Jazz.

Nobody is disputing that Beyonce or Rihanna worked hard. The issue is whether Amy had the superior CD last year and most critics and fans agreed that she did. So we are supposed to discount all that talent and hard work of BACK TO BLACK because she a drug user? People make mistakes and nobody is above — hear that Ms. Stephie? I don’t give a shit if Amy is a trainwreck, if anything it makes me sad that she is destroying herself when she has so much talent. As for her Grammy wins, it was completely deserved. The awards are based on the WORK not the personality. If that was the case, as much as Beyonce is hated by the industry (my opinion anyway, I personally like Beyonce but she is a machine), she doesn’t deserve any Grammies.

    20

Lovely and amazing, you are absolutely full of shit.

Amy’s album is the only thing under consideration. The ONLY thing. Not her personal life!

And Natalie Cole is wrong, plain and simple. She’s just bitter she hasn’t had a Grammy since ‘75 and torpedoed her own career through drugs. And now she’s jumping up and down and waving her arms like an attention whore, trying to get the spotlight shown on her, ’cause she’s pissed that she had no part in this year’s Grammy’s

Thank god the Recording Academy members have more sense than some of you fucking idiots.

It’s not about how hard you work, it’s supposed to be about the quality and originality of the output. I could get up everyday and work my ass off to write and make music and I would still suck because I am not talented musically.

  22. Shell Loves Hockey
    22

I would say that as adults we are able to distinguish between the artist’s music and their personal lives. Younger people, I think, not so much. They see the singers as one whole person, on and off the stage, and unfortunatley, Amy Winehouse is no different than the spoiled wasted rock stars of the past wrecking hotel rooms and ordering ONLY green M&M’s…. it SEEMS to come hand in hand. Thing is, by Natalie saying what she said out loud, ruins her credibilty and paints her as a pouty jealous 10 year old having a temper tantrum. She should get over herself and let it be what it is…. a great album garnered the attention it derserved.

wow are you fucking serious? hes pretty much the only person who can sing live these days. obviousily youve never bothered watching futuresex/loveshow. justins talented unlike half of these people, including amy winehouse. if you can somehow find a way to say that justin timberlake sucks..then whatever thats your opinion. and in my opinion, youre a fucking idiot.

i think just because amy winehouse has problems that doesnt mean that she should be punish for her music. who knows what rihanna and beyonce do behind closed doors……im just saying!!! lol

  26. lila
    26

Exactly Tiffany, who knows what they do? And that’s the way it should be. We don’t know, all we know is what we pay good money for them to do. I’m sorry but a chick who can’t perform her own songs is not brilliant. She has spent the whole year (that we’ve come to the attention of) running the streets naked and high out of her wits and someone wants to award that nonsense. Its very clear there’s no race card being tossed in Nat Cole’s statement. If there was she wouldn’t risk being ridiculed for being a crack head herself. I think Rihanna did a lot of work this year. And for whoever said that beyonce and rihanna just do the same old rnb stuff, well Amy’s done the same thing black ppl diddecades ago. She didn’t write all her stuff, just as none of these ppl always write their material. I agree wholeheartedly with Natalie’s statement. If there’s nothing wrong with what she said, then why don’t the grammy’s give awards to murderers, rapists and pedophiles too.

I see natalie’s point, i think that amy’s talented and her album was great, but i think the way that she treated her fans and her performances should have been taken into account. It’s not just about the music but also about the performances. Taylor Swift sings, plays the guitar, and wrote almost all of her songs by herself, plus she’s only 18, i think if she wasn’t a country artist she would’ve won.

  28. Stephi
    28

I’m not saying that I completely agree with this statement. I loved Amy’s album as much as the next person, BUT I can see where Natalie is coming from. I think that Amy’s music should be judged not her personal life, but she is sending out the wrong example and by rewarding her its not giving her any encouragement to get clean.

  29. Jesse
    29

wow this is ridiculous. A lot of people do a lot of drugs. She’s in music. musicians party. just because her life isn’t in perfect order, doesn’t make it ok to bash her and say she doesn’t deserve a grammy for not putting a lot of hard work in. If you’ve got talent, sometimes it takes half the work it takes other for the same job. Amy’s got a wonderful set of vocal chords. Let her do her thing and if you wanna see someone else win, then help em make better records or hope the talented people that do drugs stop making music. I’d much rather not see either of those happen though

Cole is right! Amy is a low life loser who happens to sing (and she sucks at it). Amy Whinehouse is fugly and why anyone would listen to her crappy music, unless young kids like ugly Whinehouse and her dysfunctional lifestyle. Whinehouse is a bad influence and her singing is just as gross as Whinehouse herself.

  32. Anna
    32

I think that the story being told to young people is that drugs make you (Amy) loose control, look worse and worse, it puts your talent and carear in jeopardy…etc. BUT if you get help you can come back and people will still love you.

Have you never heard about great artists being high when they wrote their best stuff (The Beatles, some members of R.E.M, Suede in the 90’s… the list is long)? These white male artists handeled their drugs fine and quit after a while, but the lesson is still that for artists, drugs can be positive. With Amy the lesson is the opposite, and I think that is clear to everyone. I’m so happy she won. Beyonce is a machine in comparison to Amy, but I don’t admire machines, I admire talent.

If I were Amy, I’d tell that former coke-ho to STFU and go sit her tired ass down! At least she won Grammys off of her own musical talent and not because she piggy-backed off of her dad! And if Grammys were given out according to who had problems and who didn’t….there’d be no show. Go Amy!

  35. stop the hating
    35

i agree with fugly whinehouse….Amy is fugly and her music is crappy and it sucks…. she is very dysfunctional and cant dance worth a shit or sing… ” i said no no no!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the fuck? get the hell out of here with that crap. pictures of her shooting heroin and other drugs .. what effing message is that sending… at least Natalie’s songs make sense. what effing talent she doesnt have enough talent for a grammy and i dont care what nobody says … If i was those others i would avoid that crappy ass grammy awards like tha plague!!

Go Natalie , good you got off drugs thats more than i can say for some others… fathers coattail or not… at least you can sing! Go Natalie … you look good girl!!

    37

Although I disagree with Ms. Coles statement, where the F@ck did the “Enter race card” comment come in as justified. I didn’t see anything racist in the comment. She didn’t mention race, You did! Is it because the two artist she mentioned as deserving of the award are black? Her comment pertained to work ethic and she felt the artist she mentioned have a work ethic and Amy doesn’t in her opinion.

  38. Blake
    38

Natalie is one to talk, she was a crack whore herself and has only had a hit when it was done with her father! She’s been riding his coattails for YEARS!
And she puts Beyonce up to be praised? Amy has more natural talent in her fingertips than Beyonce has had all these years. And Amy has more Grammys now than B has had as a solo artist. Beyonce got more Grammys and awards when she was in Destinys Child!

  39. Shari
    39

Natalie Cole is a big hypocrite. She would be no where without her fathers good name and talent. Also, she was a raging drug addict and whatever else in her younger days so that is why she is the hypocrite. If all these musicians awards were based on their addictions and problems, no one would be getting awards because “most” musicians dip into alcohol or drugs in some point of their lives. Amy Winehouse is very talented young girl, I just hope she can get her shit together and stay with us and continue to share her God given talent.
