50TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS: ARRIVALS

Best Rap Album nominee Nas ruffled a few feathers at the 50th annual Grammy Awards when he came backstage with wife Kelis to promote his album N*gger, due in April.

The word was emblazoned in silver across his black T-shirt. “This album is for all the so-called n*ggerss in the world (who are) being mistreated,” the rapper said.

Why bother courting the n-word controversy in the first place? “We felt like shaking it up with something real,” he said. “To open up some awareness. Of course, people are going to be getting a little crazy about it. Hip-hop has been catching a lot of flak. We use the word in our music. For the last year, it’s just been really crazy with the word. As rappers are getting all the blame, I thought I’d talke about it and express myself.”

Kelis, also sporting the word on her top, said, “The word is not important. Whether we say it or not, we still get treated like one.”

Our thoughts?

what a couple of imbeciles. Can someone tap this little wannabe and tell him there’s a black man running for president now.

What a couple of simpletons these two are.

He didn’t really explain WHY he thinks he needs to use this word; whether it’s to reclaim it, point out the absurdity of such a term, or otherwise. His best reasoning is that he wanted to “shake it up with something real”. It seems like an attention-getting ploy that could hurt a lot of people, imo.

I find this a stupid idea. We are trying to get rid of racism not trying to condone it. This is just for attention IMO. Hey, they got it! We’re all talking about it and for sure it’s going to make headlines! Good for them for getting the attention they wanted. Watch the cd not sell at all…

how low class. no respect whatsoever for the industry that’s provided these marginally talented people with such a sweet life.

And yet, they have you all talking now. Had they not done that there wouldn’t have been talk of it being related to his album dropping.
Take it as the whole ploy Macy Gray had when she wore that hidious dress to the Grammy’s a few years back saying about how her album was dropping soon.
Chalk it up however you want, they’ve got you talking.

What a couple of assholes. Personally, I can think of plenty of uncomplimentary things to call them without even once using the word “N****r. So fuck them and their attitude.

This is very terrible shameful. They look like two ignorant low lifes. How dare them pull this stunt during black history month. All we can do is pray for them, they obviously need prayer.

And exactly when are they treated this way? Is it before or after they step out of their limousine? Oh yeah, they’re keeping it REAL.

Go to Africa you dumb motherfuckers. Then you’ll really know what it’s like to be treated like N*iggers. You have it good here in America. It’s not your mother getting gang raped by a bunch of HIV positive rebels or your children becoming sex slaves. I hate fucken crybabies like this.

Yeah looks like a bit of a publicity stunt really. I really really hate this word and I don’t even like the fact that they are using it to stir up discussion. It’s not like fuck or shit or any other swear word it has a history to it and I don’t think it should be thrown around. I don’t understand why African American rappers use the words themselves. In my opinion it sends the message that its ok for everyone else to use it. It’s ok for nobody to use it.

‘Go to Africa’ … is that really the comment you are reduced to saying? Wow, you really pulled out the big guns on that one.. feel proud.

It was done for shock value, that’s obvious. I am sure they both knew it when they got dressed for the show. The point is shock and awe, both reactions which have been seen on this very site over the issue.

The word is only as powerful as you let it be.

I would like to think people in the Millenium are able to rise above such a word and know that it is just that ‘a word’. Am I giving too much credit to the people of today? Should everyone need someone else to hold their hands and cut their food for them?

  23. boohoo
    February-11-2008 @ 3:15 am

No I’m not ‘reduced’ to saying that. Funny how people pull out the race card when they’re showing up to award shows in gold pants. When you say stupid shit like “The word is not important. Whether we say it or not we still get treated like one.” Still get treated like one? She shouldn’t confuse being treated bad for being black with being treated bad for being an arrogant bitch. If she wants to know what it really feels like to be treated bad yes- she should go to Africa. Not wearing designer shit and complaining about being black. So fucker her. Why don’t they use their argument for the atrocities being committed in the world instead of promoting Nas next album.

So, I’m a huge honky. Does this mean that I get to say the N word now if I want? Now that bigtime rap stars are wearing the word fucking EMBLAZONED on their apparel at the goddamn Grammy Awards?

Gee, I wonder why racial tension exists.

Say what you like but Nas is extremely talented. Maybe he actually has something to say…

  30. Fair
    February-11-2008 @ 7:42 am

Why is this fair????? It is ok for black people to do this and then they want to yell and scream when other people do it. If it is not right for all other races to do it or say it then it should be the same for the black race. This is what is wrong with America.

Nas and his wife Kelis need their asses beat!

  35. February-11-2008 @ 11:27 am

FAIR…. excuse me but are you listening, 99% of black people dont do that and most of us want to whip Nas’s ass and his wifes ass too. Black people dont go for this shit, its always a asshole in the bunch and i will whip a asshole down using that in my presence and dont fucking think that doesnt apply to nas’s dumb ass! From now on he is shit to me and i will never ever give him credit or buy his cd’s. I dont know what attention he is trying to grab but it aint working with me and dont fucking think black folks like this shit… you got to be off your rocker!

If a white musician or group would have created this line of clothing they would have sued or killed. The industry needs to come together and refuse to sell it or market it in any way. It’s derogatory and shouldn’t be sold. I’d love to see a somewhat bald (skin headed) person wearing and see what happens.

They are ridiculous and are creating the very problems they claim to want to disappear. They are an embarrassment to all of us!

The statement Kelis made about whether the word is said or not that black people still get treated like a n*gger is true though, I can co-sign with that. However, I do believe there are better ways of going about this…
