So, just how much did taxpayers fork over for Britney Spears to be escorted to the hospital earlier this week? Nearly $25 000!!!!
Dennis Zine, Los Angeles City Councilman, announced today he plans to push for an ordinance that would create a minimum “personal safety zone” around individuals targeted by the media. He said paparazzi are endangering celebs and bystanders with their aggressive antics.
Says Zine: “I don’t want a repeat of what happened to Princess Diana with a celebrity in Los Angeles. We had to have 12 officers escort (Britney Spears) to the hospital that if not for paparazzi would have been to prevent crime somewhere else. Celebrities have a right to live in peace and freedom.”
Legal officals came up with the detailed scheme which included blocking off roads to get the pop star to the hospital. Police officials, meahwhile, defended the cost, saying that aggressive paparazzi required the dozen police officers.
To give you some perspective of where he’s coming from, put it this way: authorities have responded to more than 20 calls in just the last month involving Britney.
Our thoughts? Should new laws be put in place in order to prevent the paparazzi from causing danger to others in an attempt to capture their prey? Or do they have a right to earn a salary — whatever the cost may be?

Britney should have to pay back the money it cost us taxpayers to take her to the nut house. Why should the public pay for this? Twice now?

I feel bad for the people in the LA area who’s tax money goes to protecting her from the media she courts so often. She should be forced to pay some of the money back if it’s proven she phoned them to say where she was going to be….
Those photographers have a right to earn a living, no question, but they are aggressive because of the public’s insatiable thirst for information. We loved soap opera’s in the past because we enjoyed watching the rich and famour suffer. Ratings soared. Now they don’t anymore because we have real life soap opera’s and real life rich and famous right in front of us all the time. ALL THE TIME. These blogs give us information MINUTES after it happens. So in part I blame us as well.
It’s just a big circle and who knows when or where it will stop.
This is why celebrities are rich enough to hire bodyguards!
Is this what the cops are concentrating on? Screw all the criminals! Let’s make sure nut-case-Britney is safe from the people that MADE HER FAMOUS! 99% of celebrities would be nothing without the media. Stop bitching. If you dont like it, leave LA.

there should be laws. yes, they have a right to earn a living, but not at the expense/danger of others. plus, too often it’s an invasion of privacy and personal space (did photos of a crying & devasated michele williams need to be published?).

If you had some stranger following your every move with a camera in hand you would call them a stalker. Just because some one is famous doesn’t mean that they’ve lost all of their rights.
she pays taxes too.more than the average person in LA so whats the problem?
these paps are just stalkers and should be dealt with as such. that said, i wish i could quit cruising celeb gossip sites that use their photos, bc i’m making it worse… but i’m an addict.

I’m of two minds on it…I think we need more stringent paparazzi laws, but an individual is also responsible for their own actions. If Brit-Brit courts the paps, she can’t get upset when they follow her more aggressively and should do what she can to protect herself from it as she feels it’s necessary. There should be laws in place, however, determining how aggressive the paparazzi can be. The high-speed chase and blocking her car bullshit is out of line.

I think the paps should be arrested for stalking celebs any place other than on the red carpets. These people are entitled to a personal life, too. We really don’t need to know or see everything they do.
when they block her car, that is illegal. obstruction of traffic. also wreckless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle — there are laws in place; the police just aren’t enforcing them enough.
I live in LA and I honestly don’t mind if my taxes go toward keeping somebody safe, whether they are a celebrity or not. Britney hasn’t asked for this attention and I’m sure if she could have slipped off to the hospital safely and without too much fuss she would have. I definately think they should put some laws into place to protect these celebrities. The paparazzi are dangerous and are known to speed and totally infringe people’s personal space and their privacy. I don’t see how that cannot be illegal.

I’m no fan of Britneys but over the past 10 years she has paid multi-millions to the tax man. She’s paid more taxes than probably everyone on this site put together so to bill her the $25,000 or whatever it was then thats just lame.
1/2 of her entire earnings have went on tax. So if she has a personal fortune of $150M then she’s paid A LOT in tax already.
L.A especially needs more laws developed to protect celebrities. Yeah, they could have bodyguards but most celebs want to lead as normal a life as possible & swanning around town with a bodyguard isn’t very normal … Also, the expense of a bodyguards is immense [notice lohan has ditched hers]
Celebrities can pay for their own damn escort. 12 police officers escorting her is way over board. 2 or 3 would have been fine as well.
