Angelina Joile: Actress, mother, philanthropist and now political activist?
The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, a liberal farmers’ group, has asked the United Nations to send the Hollywood humanitarian to visit the Philippines to check on the rising number of people displaced by army offensives in the countryside.
Since the late 1960s, the Philippine army has been fighting communist insurgents and Muslim separatists in twin insurgencies that have killed 160,000 people, displaced over 2 million and stunted economic growth in the country.
“Since June 2005, we have been asking the chair of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, to look into this and send Angelina Jolie to see the real situation of internally displaced people in the country,” leader Willy Marbella told reporters. “Hundreds of people are being forced out of their homes and farms every month.”
Sounds tragic, but anyone else get the sneaking suspicion that this is all merely a ploy by the Philippino people to get themselves a piece of Angie? Yeah, I thought so…

I like the fact she is trying to help — but seriously what are her credentials! It’s good and fine to try to help others but just because she is Angelina Jolie doesn’t mean that people will automatically do the right thing because she said so. There are a TON of qualified people trying to help the issues and it’s a little egotistical to think that just because YOU go there that the problem will be automatically resolved.

I find it insulting to think that most Americans don’t know what is going on in the world. Just because Ms. Jolie became “enlightened” a few years ago and realized that there are poor people doesn’t mean that other people didn’t realize that some individuals in the world are poor and disenfranchised. Just because she was ignorant a few years ago doesn’t mean that other people have their heads stuck in the ground.
I want to see people who actually know what they are doing to try to help the poor not just a pretty face.

Obviously — I do like Angelina and I like Brad Pitt. It has nothing to do with whether I l”like” her or not. My only problem is that I think people who know what they are doing and have some expertise in a particular field should be the one to go and help. And by expertise I mean people who have graduate degrees in refugee studies or aid to other countries, individuals who have worked long and hard to think about how a particular problem can be solved. There are plenty of brilliant minds out there who have made it their life work to try to solve the problems (economist Jeffrey Sachs and A. Sen, doctor Paul Farmer, etc.) and I think it is naive to think that she can just come to a particular country and solve the issues.
I am sure she has read about what is going on. My point is I want to see the people in need get helped. I want the best person to help them. My point of view is not on how Jolie feels or what is best for her or how my critism might affect her. I want to see the people that need the most help to get the help that they need and deserve. I am tired of when people use it as a photo op (not saying that Ms. Jolie is doing this). I don’t want these people to be used as photo ops. When most people see these pictures they are not thinking — who this is a great cause I wonder how to help — they are thinking ‘oh, she looks so pretty — that is such a great thing she is doing.’ and completely forget about the WHY she is even there.
I don’t know if I even make sense, just my 2 cents.

That’s not the only problem we are having here in the Philippines..As long as The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas and the Philippine Government doesn’t solve their problem I dont think that this will ever stop-the killings…Even if I will join those rallies I don’t think that it will be solved..Philippine is just like any other countries that facing/having so many problems..Killings, corruption and etc.. but as long as there are corruptions here problems will never be solved…And those killings? Yes sometimes the govt. played their part specially if you are opposing for them..Me? the only thing I can contribute to my country is to be a good citizen.. I don’t think that I can solve it alone…How about you any ideas on how you can help us?

Besides that, I think that what she is doing is awesome but at the same time I think she’s getting in over her head with this charity thing. It’s like with Darfur. Yes, it’s tragic but we must let their government take care of their country and their problems. It is not our job to fix their problems. We can only do so much and in the end, it’s up to their government to make changes and to fix their problems.

Werkit- I don’t usually bother with Brangelina posts… but calling Jennifer Aniston selfish for *possibly* not wanting to have kids? That is ridiculous. Why/how is that selfish? Kids are not for everyone, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s more selfish to bring kids into this world if you’re not sure you even want them. Otherwise I agree that, if the matter of procreation was the issue, that is definitely very different life views and not something to take lightly… and I understand why people would part under those circumstances.
