OSMOND ORGY ON OPRAH

Don’t forget to catch Oprah today. She’s flew out the entire Osmond family for the one-hour special.
“We talked about it and my father would want us all to be here,” Marie Osmond tells Oprah on her show. “He loved his family.”
George Osmond planned to travel to Chicago to tape the show, but he died Tuesday at age 90 at his home in Provo, Utah.
He had nine children, 55 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. Needless to say, the man had a very fulfilled life.

So that’s what…about 1/16th of the population of Utah?
November 9th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
I grew up in the 70’s, and STILL wouldn’t watch this Oprah.

Good GoD……someone introduce these people to birth control….
November 9th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
And Mormans give 10% of all they make to the church. Just think you much cash they’re making off the Osmonds alone!
November 9th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
starr - I laughed when I read that because the exacty same sentence ran through my head.
November 9th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
that is one hell of a lot of perfect teeth!
November 9th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
errrr, wtf is this? and?
November 9th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Actually osmondo most Christian churches believe in tithe-ing (sp?) and that is 10% of your pre-tax income.
November 9th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Barks - a lot of Christian churches de-emphasize tithing while encouraging donations - no set amount, just give what you’re able. LDS practically requires tithing, and they’re one of the wealthiest churches out there because of it.

I just finished watching Oprah with the Osmonds and it was great! I grew up watching them and I wouldn’t have missed it.
November 9th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
OH MY FRAKING GOD!!!
Can you get cheesier?
CHESSSSSSY CAKE parteeee
November 9th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Kidge, how can most Christian churches de-emphasize tithing, when it’s biblical? It’s not like they pulled the 10% thing out of nowhere, it’s in the bible. How can they be bible believing churches, and not encourage this? They must have one heck of a family reunion! That’s a BIG family.
November 9th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I think that’s great that the whole family showed up. George must be really proud of them all. It’s nice that Oprah did something like this. How great would it be to have a family THAT big!
November 9th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Hiedi - they’re Christian churches…they can de-emphasize whatever the hell they want, as they often do. The focus of the Christian masses I’ve attended hasn’t been on tithing, but on plain old donation. I’m speaking of the majority here - there are definitely some larger Baptist churches that are still pretty vehement on charging…excuse me, tithing…their parishes, but it’s not like it used to be.

To anyone that watches Lakewood Church or Joel Osteen (largest church in north America) you never see him asking for money ON TV but they can’t get those buckets out fast enough when you attend the actual church. And the 10% is just your regular tithe, you are expected to dig deeper for special projects.
November 9th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
The New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. Paul states that believers should set aside a portion of their income in order to support the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).
November 9th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
This is the reason there is overpopulation in the world, some families have wayyyy too many children and grandchildren. I know you want the legacy to live on, but give me a break!
I’m suprised Oprah did this show, doesn’t seem like something she would have on her show.
November 9th, 2007 at 6:27 pm
Barks: You know, I always wondered if tithing thing applied to gross or net income. Yikes, 10% of gross?!?
Frankly, I don’t think that’s what Jesus would do. He said, “Render unto Caeser what is Caeser’s, render unto God what is God’s.” He gave the government the first cut, then said give God his share. So I’m thinking Jesus himself mandated that tithing was 10% of net–not gross–income.
Hah!

Heh. Big family, and I had no idea who any of them were… I actually had to google the Osmonds. No joke. But meh, looks like I didn’t miss much.
November 9th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
I loved the show…and the Osmonds..it was fun..but then I am older than dirt
November 9th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
The show was great,i commend them for not lowering their standards, like everyone else in Hollywood.
November 9th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
I’ve never been to a church that “charged” Kidge, so I don’t have any experience with that. Every church I’ve ever been a part of passes the offering bucket around, and you are of course encouraged to give (as it is biblical) but not forced to. Also, not to point out the obvious, but the definition of tithe, is “from Old English teogoþa “tenth”. So tithe means tenth. How can it NOT be ten percent then? And it’s not like anyone has access to your financial records and knows if you’re giving a tenth or not, that’s between you and God!
November 9th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
That’s what started the convo tho hiedi - LDS REQUIRES you to donate your 10% and they ask for a financial statement to prove you’re pulling your weight. And, I’m not surprised you’ve never been to a church that “charged,” because you were probably visiting. I have joined 8 churches in my lifetime (my husband’s job moved us around alot initially) and its something they bring up during the membership process, never when they’re passing the plate.
November 9th, 2007 at 11:36 pm
actually I’ve been a member in two churches, and attended church my whole life. I understand that it’s something that is expected, but MOST churches don’t REQUIRE financial proof and whatnot. That’s a bit extreme.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:30 am
hmm no “adam” to espouse the hypocrisies of the christian church- anti islam only hey?? Hmm I’ve heard the name “the Osmonds” but never knew they were some kind of dynasty! That’s massive!
November 10th, 2007 at 6:25 am
Watched them as a kid. They’re pretty much a freak show now in that people just don’t procreate like this anymore in the “modern” world (seriously, this isn’t the garden of eden - no need to “go forth, fuck and populate”). However, I’m sure it made for good tv (if not completely cheesy tv). I’ll watch the rerun and marvel at how different my life and family is from theirs.
November 10th, 2007 at 7:20 am
Toonces I dont know where you have gotten your info. but the LDS church DOESN’T REQUIRE you to pay a tithe,if you dont pay the tithe you wont be able to get a temple recommend, and you are NOT required to show a financial statement EVER,that is between you and the lord, and your honesty, although it is tax deductible the IRS would know,I suppose.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:48 am
That’s a huge family!
November 10th, 2007 at 9:06 am
Damn..am I the one person who would never want a family that big? I have a hard enough time keeping up with who we have now and we’re a 1/3 of that. And nine children made 55 grandchildren?!…That alone..just..ugh..I’m done.
November 10th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Mormons are “required” to tithe and to cover extra expenses of their local “wards” and “stakes.” If we do not tithe, we lose our rights to participate in temple ceremonies. Since we believe that temple rights are essential, this is, in my opinion, a “forced” generousity.

I have read most of your little blogs.. you “Millenial” children, oh grow up and look outside of yourself. The LDS church asks that you pay 1/10th of your income…yes that is gross income. Grow up, that isn’t too much to pay back to The Lord, to have your experience on earth. Get out of your cheap self and give something back. If you can’t give something to your church (not LDS, but Baptist or Catholic or Evangelist, or whatever) give to the guy holding up the sign at the intersection of the freeway. The day will come when you are standing with Christ at your Life-Review and He will ask you what you did with your life and time. Look around, everyone needs a leg up! I’m so sick of you spoiled and indulged Millenial kids. Amen!
