While the WGA strike wages on, Hayden Panettiere is certainly keeping herself busy.
The Heroes cutie appeared on fellow animal nut Ellen DeGeneres‘ show today to talk about saving whales. In her first (ok, second after Access Hollywood) sit-down interview since she heroically tried, but failed, to save a pod of pilot whales in Japan, Hayden talks about her experience and the importance of protecting these animals.
Says H.Pat: “They (Japanese fisherman in Yai Chi) herd all these dolphins and whales into a bay area, and they basically slaughter them. And just the way they do it is just so completely inhumane, and umm, we went out there and tried to do a peaceful ceremony.”
As you may recall, the fishermen were far from star struck. Hayden used her body to protect the whales, which angered the fishermen, who started to jab the star with their fishing poles. One man even threatened Hayden with his boat’s propellor.
“Yeah, he was hitting our boards, hit another girl,” she said. “And we held our ground as long as we could and then paddled back in.”
A true Hero, indeed!

Listen, I’m all for a person believing in their cause but what Hayden did was stupid, ignorant and dangerous. Sure, I want the dolphins to be safe too. But you don’t go into a FOREIGN COUNTRY and throw yourself in the path of grown men trying to make a living for their families (whether you agree with what they ‘re doing or not, these are ADULTS who have families to feed). This is why Americans are so fucking hated in other parts of the world. She’s a child (18 years old) so I’ll give her a small pass. But if she wants to help the dolphins, she going to have to find a way to do it where she’s not (1) putting herself in unnecessary danger, (2) disrespectful of other governments, customs and people and (3) so ignorant on the subject (including the history and cultural aspects). The arrogance factor she and her friends had need to be checked. Now.
^She’s lucky they didn’t break her fucking neck or worse.
Amen.. supernova!
she is young- she will learn one day that you can not save every animal or every person.
I do not agree with the Japanese, but it is their land, their water
i think its good she is doing somehting that she cares about, but honestly that has been in the culture for such a long time its niave to thinkg you can change it by one act. maybe hayden should focus on some shit going on in our own backyard. maybe someone should focus on vancouver and the fact that they have the biggest homelessness in canada, and the most drug fueled neighborhood in north america..go down hastings street and its like your in a fuckin third world country. no stars have ever given a shit about that, other then billy talent with thier song fallen leaves…so many stars come through vancouver it makes me fuckin want to puke
^Wow, maxthebitch. I didn’t know that about Vancouver. Awful. Just goes to show how screwed up our priorities are.
don’t be so hard on the girl; she could be doing a lot worse with the limelight than standing up for animal rights.
marine abuse is a global issue. i’m all for cultural sensitivity, but these are commercial hunters who hide their cruel (inexpensive) practices even from their fellow citizens.
people have a right to their traditions insofar as all parties are consentual. i highly doubt the dolphins are consenting. hayden is right that they can’t speak or fight for themselves, and in such cases we need to see past political boundaries and get involved.
besides, it’s not like she was staging a hate-filled demonstration. she just paddled out into a bay and sat on a surfboard.
^so… the fisherman should have gotten a letter of consent from the dolphins?
maxthebitch - Its true about Vancouver, but its an unrelated subject. Thats like saying, yeah they are abusing animals but wha abuot the people in Africa with AIDS, there are problems all over the world, and you cannot focus on just one problem. There are huge problem with seal clubbing, there are problems all over the world, I think its good that she is thinking outside of American problems, and focusing on the world. Yeah, she went into another country to protest, but what about the americans that protested the seal clubbing? It doesnt directly effect the USA, but they tried to get involved in it. Everybody on this planet shares this world, and just beacuse we all have different governments, there are some things that it takes an outside influence to change. What is Hitler went on assasinating the jewish race in just Germany, and didnt go into another country, would it not be anybodies responsibility but Germany? She went to save the animals, it was not political, she just cares and wanted to save the dolphins. And maybe her doing that, is going to get the problem out into the world, beacuse I didn’t know about the serverity of the problem until she stepped out. Celebs get media attention, and if they work for something soon everybody will know about it. I support her.
Oops, in my above post remove the sentence that says there are a huge problem with seal clubbing, I got distracted and didnt proof read before posting! Sorry.
Hayden is just a little cutie and still seems to a nice girl—-gold star for her.
Sure the fisherman have families to feed by why feed them dolphins! And do they have to be killed in such barbaric ways? No. It’s all about money money money to these people. I would eat grass any day before I ate dolphin. It’s disgusting. Hayden did a good thing and I would have done the same thing if I was her.
I saw this video and felt sick. I can’t believe how cruel and heartless some humans can be to animals. I really respect Hayden and am thrilled she’s on Ellen. I pray more people will get involved and maybe even Ellen will do something.
I’d like to know what’s the difference between dolphins and any other sea-dwelling creature? Why isn’t she out to save the tunas? Or the sea anemones?
I am totally getting a gay vibe from Hayden here. She’d be the cutest little baby dyke!
Supernova is RIGHT ON….as usual!
Hayden is such a cliche of a girl, there’s something really fake about her peppiness and mock niavety. Whatever, she’s hot though and I like her in Heroes…
THANK YOU 4.54 - Hypocrites. Again, this is why Americans are so hated in other parts of the world. The same people claiming to want to save Dolphins and cheering on this teenage idiot for her naive actions are the same motherfuckers standing in line at McDonalds for a Big Mac.
^I agree Supersonic. Not to mention that she is a spoiled, privileged, Hollywood brat making millions of dollars a year. Who the hell is SHE to stand in the face of people who are making mere pennies to feed their families (compared to her bloated salary) and keep them from making their living. Is what the fisherman doing illegal in Japan? I doubt it. Did she check with the local authorities before confronting them and making assumptions. I HIGHLY doubt it? Did she seek backup from the authorities to enforce any broken laws. No. Arrogance. Ignorance. Stupidity. And ANY young girl who starts a confrontation with grown men as if she can kick their ass is BEGGING to get the living shit beat out of her.
^And I hope her mother teaches her how to be more careful about not only the battles she chooses but on how to fight them appropriately.
If nothing else, her “stunt” brought attention to the atrocity of the slaughter. Perhaps the rest of the world will see fit to bring pressure (as in trade sanctions) on Japan to cease such actions.
I don’t agree with her methods, but bringing the world’s attention to this can only be a good thing.
I like her idealism. I hope she is able to retain some of it as she ages.
babyfat!!! look at her arms… where’s my mcflurry?
^Good point just askin’ (for me, it’s her methods that are troublesome). Like I initially said, I can appreciate the cause but the methods…. well, again, she’s a kid.
haha ya i know unrelated subject, my bad..i just had a joint n it started coming out
^^I don’t think it was unrelated. The point is that there are bigger problems in the world then dolphins. Why not work on solving our PEOPLE problems before we move to animals?
*than dolphins. Sorry, I’m an English major, had to correct myself.
4.54, the way people treat animals is a good indicator of how they will treat their fellow humans. We can’t ignore the plight of creatures like these dolphins–we do so at the peril of our planet.
^ Thank you. Unbelieveable how people continually excuse cruelty. And just because people are trying to help animals, you asses, doesn’t mean homo sapiens are getting ignored. Don’t be so ignorant. I imagine like myself for every animal org Hayden supports there are 12 other orgs that deal primarily with human beings. This shit is not mutually exclusive you stupid jerks. Get a clue.
what hayden did was pretty foolish, i agree, but i admire her idealism and her commitment to doing something about a cause she believes in. in relation to the comment about caring about whales and not tuna.. many types of whales and dolphins are in danger of becoming extinct because of excessive hunting. tuna doesn’t really face this problem. when it does, it will matter more.. of course. it’s just really hard to protect alot of these whales because of their migratory nature. they swim into japanese waters and then there’s nothing we can do anymore, which is sad
In fact it’s now prohibited for japanese to kill the number of dolphins they do. Their governement said it because it’s in extinction over there. Normally they hide their activity more. But I do agree with the fact that it’s a stupid action from Hayden. And I don’t really like her. She seems to try to much. I don’t know what but I feel like she is not her real self and it’s bothering me well as much as dolphins does.
Did anyone read about the surfer in CA. who was saved from a great white shark by dolphins this week??? After being attacked three times by the 14′ shark a group of dolphins came and circled the surfer to fend off the shark until the poor guy made it to shore–he lived but just barely. The same thing happened off Austraila not long ago. Many other incidents like this have been reported. Seems like dolphins like us and some folks are not being very nice to them. The Japanese need to change their culture and find another way to earn a living, as do tobacco and poppy growers etc. However, Supernova is correct from a coldly practical point of view; Americans are much to arrogant and we tend to do more harm than good in many instances. I hope Ms. Clinton will be able to repair some of the damage that has been done over the past seven years.
