Everyone’s favourite former president Bill Clinton was joined by everyone’s favourite actor Brad Pitt at the 5th annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York City yesterday (September 24).
New Orleans resident Pitt was on hand to speak with Clinton about the current status of the ‘Make it Right in New Orleans’ campaign which strives to live up to it’s namesake and restore prosperity to the damaged area.
Brad started the foundation in 2007. The program focuses home construction in a section of New Orleans heavily damaged when Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005. The homes are being built with features including rooftop solar panels and energy-efficient appliances to help reduce electricity consumption.
Claiming that the cost of building the energy-efficient homes is dropping and by the time all 150 promised homes are completed, the cost will be comparable to standard buildings, Brad said: “I don’t know how we build any other way anywhere else. We can no longer tell ourselves that implementing this technology is too complex a problem because it’s just been proven on this little spot on the map.”
The star-studded summit — which began Tuesday and was attended by the likes of Jessica Alba, Matt Damon, Alicia Keys Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Barbra Streisand – will end tomorrow.

If the entire city of New Orleans has to rely on actors to build houses then it’s doomed. Personally I feel this is a huge adventure in gratuitous self promotion. The “houses” the workers built are little more than stacked sheds that would certainly not stand the wind of another hurricane. In a city which prides itself on historic architecture and attracts millions of tourist with this old-world, these ugly stacked boxes are actually little more than an embarrassing eyesore. The answer isn’t building ugly shacks and strengths of the levees surrounding the city. Provide temporary housing for the displaced, many who have already left, and rebuild quality houses that ENHANCE the area. Increasing the height and strengthening the city’s levees are really the primary unglamorous issue that addressing. That is a national job and not really Pitt’s responsibility. Do they even live there after claiming to make it their home ? it stinks of fickle vain indulgence for gratuitous self promotion.
Gov. Perry (R)of Texas welcomed many into his state, sheltered and fed them while ignored by the media.Many have decided to stay in Texas.
He is one of the real heroes of Katrina, not these dumb celebs or dumb mayor nagin (D)and his “chocolate city” and the incomeptent former gov. blanco (D).
