After a four year hiatus, VH1 Divas officially came back last night (September 17) with a new crop of fresh, young, and talented female artists.
Host Paula Abdul was in fine form, performing a medley of hits at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. Even despite the tumble, the former American Idol judge appeared coherent for the most part.
After a wardrobe and wig change, Paula did her best impersonation of her
Idol replacement
Ellen DeGeneres.
“Why you all staring at me? Can’t a girl try out a new job?” while lounging on a big comfy talk show couch. “All kidding aside, nothing but love, Ellen. I wish you the best of luck and congratulations on the new gig! And you got to call me if you have any Simon [Cowell] problems, because I know him best.”

Jennifer Hudson offered up a booming version of
Spotlight.
While on the red carpet, the new mom said she’s loving being a new mom to son David Daniel Otunga Jr. “It’s the best. He’s an angel. I love everything about it.”
Both clad in black,
Leona Lewis found herself schooled a bit in her duet with
Cyndi Lauper on
True Colors.
Miss Lauper played a dulcimer, and the two held hands at the end of the tender moment.
The weakest of the divas vocally,
Miley Cyrus hardly held her own with a strained version of
Party in the U.S.A., but the cheap clothing and way-too-high miniskirt offered a minor albeit inappropriate distraction.
Among the duets,
Jordin Sparks was most capable of keeping up with her singing partner,
Martina McBride. After belting out the country singer’s
A Broken Wing, Jordin channeled her inner
Beyonce when she ditched the gown and donned a sparkly minidress amid more than a dozen backup dancers grinding behind her as she worked the stage to
S.O.S. (Let the Music Play) from
Battlefield.
Miley managed to find her clothes when she took the stage again for a duet of
If It Makes You Happy with rocker
Sheryl Crow. The two looked like nothing if not mother and daughter.
Kelly Clarkson began with a slow-building version of
Already Gone that had her standing in an emerald gown and raising her hands to the roof as she nailed her high notes.
The
American Idol alum Clarkson then joined rock queen
Melissa Etheridge to close the show with a hard-rocking take on
Bring Me Some Water.
Last and certainly not least, it was J.Hud’s soaring duet with Stevie Wonder on All in Love Is Fair that showed the evening’s true magic.

Yeah that stevie wonder is a real diva. Why do I get the feeling five minutes before curtain stevie was like “I’m not the only brother here right?”

This is all a bit of a joke right. This new crop of Divas is nothing on the originals. Miley Cyrus can hardly even sing, Jennifer Hudson is highly overrated and strains her voice, Jordin Sparks and Leona Lewis have both only been around for about a year- hardly long enough to be compared to Mariah, Celine, Whitney etc. Kelly is the only one I would dare put in that group…maybe.
I’m 30 so I remember Paula from her Laker Girl days to Sraight Up. I like her. She is sorta like Old Hollywood. Dance, act, sing, do anything that will give her a job. Reminds me of Sammy Davis Jr. and the rest of the Rat Pack. In a weird way.
I agree that Jennifer Hudson is overrated but she is still good.
Leona’s voice is good but not that good. She is no diva.
Miley should have been a stripper in the small town she’s from. Young girls are idiots these days. They are fans of the worst things.
I like Jordin’s new song but she’s nothing special.
Kelly Clarkson looks like a sausage in her green dress. Dresses don’t suit her.

Jennier Hudson has NO right to wear those black leather pants. women her size should either lose weight or stick to skirts, no one wants to see excessive fat.
