Elton John attended a news conference at a orphanage for HIV positive children in the town of Makeyevka, Ukraine over the weekend (September 12).
The 62-year-old legendary musician has announced that he and his partner, David Furnish, want to give a home to a 14-month-old boy from the Ukrainian HIV orphanage.
Sir Elton said the blond-haired child, named Lev, had “stolen his heart.” He said: “David and I have always talked about adoption. David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said, ‘No’, because I am 62 and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child.
“But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”
But Elton and 46-year-old David’s bid to give the kid a home could be refused because it is illegal for gay couples to adopt in the Ukraine. What’s more? The couple are also deemed too old to look after the young boy because national laws state there must be no more than a 45-year age gap between a child and its adoptive parents. Should the adoption go through, Elton and David would also be required to adopt Lev’s brother under Ukrainian rules.

God bless this man. I used to work at an AIDS clinic in Atlanta. Kids living with HIV are given up for adoption at alarming rates and NO ONE ever adopts them. They end up being shuffled in a broken system. Elton is a savior for doing this. I hope the Ukranian government knows what’s right for them and allows this to go through.

I’m torn with this issue. I don’t have a problem with gay couples adopting if they can give a child in need a good home, but Elton is right when he says his lifestyle doesn’t really allow him much time to be a father. And they are quite old to have a baby. By the time the child is 20 both Elton and David may be dead. It’s a difficult issue and I’m guessing they probably won’t be approved.
