Oprah recently visited with her new BFF Jay-Z in the Marcy housing project in Brooklyn, NY — and now their chat is out in the new October issue of O magazine.
Some highlights:
Jay-Z on dealing drugs at 13:
Jay-Z: “It was natural…”
Oprah: “Because drug dealers were your role models. There wasn’t a teacher or lawyer or nurse of doctor or and accountant in the neighborhood?”
Jay-Z: “Well, we were living in Marcy by then, so no. And if anyone did become something like that, they moved out. They never came back to share the wisdom of how they made it. If anyone made it, you never knew it. That’s why I’ve always said that if I become successful, I’d come back here, grab somebody, and show him how it can be done.”Jay-Z on the use of the N word:
Oprah: “Do you believe that using the N word is necessary?”
Jay-Z: “Nothing is necessary. It’s just become part of the way we communicate. My generation hasn’t had the same experience with that word that generations of people before us had. We weren’t so close to the pain. So in our way, we disarmed the word. We took the fire pin out of the grenade.”Jay-Z on marrying Beyonce:
Oprah: “Can I ask how in the world you kept your wedding a secret?”
Jay-Z: “Late planning!”
Oprah: “How many people knew?”
Jay-Z: “Very few. The sad part is that we offended some. But people who love you understand. Because at the end of the day, it’s your day.”
The new issue of O magazine hits newsstands on September 15.

Jay-Z has a point about his generation not having the same experience with the n-word that the older generations had, which means in other words the older generation have let the younger ones down by not giving them the leadership they so desperately needs. However, Jay-Z’s comments about disarming the n-word is very misleading; on one hand there is this illusion about the word being used as a term of endearment, but yet in a fit of anger reality sets in and the use of the word reverts back to its intended purpose…to demean and degrade.
Oprah would never have given this (trash ,dumb as rocks filthy and purveyor of everything that is wrong with society) the time of day if he wasn’t rich.
How money makes for strange bedfellows.
it started out as a word to de-grade by whites to blacks and it should end up not being used at all! jayz is not trash and i give him credit for coming up in poverty and ending up a millionaire! And aint no filthier the these perverts that roam the streets of society preying on young kids like that pervert they just caught that keep the child for 18 years.. now thats sick filth, dirt and a surely a person who should taken out of society.. jay z pleassseee!!!
alicia, one wrong doesn’t justify another wrong.
People that dumb should never breed, I hear their is another czar that might take care of that.
Just Trash wrote: Oprah would never have given this (trash ,dumb as rocks filthy and purveyor of everything that is wrong with society) the time of day if he wasn’t rich. How money makes for strange bedfellows. This statement is 100% right!!
Apparently O is no longer selling.
So Oprah made a deal with the devil and went against her beliefs in order to sell in the ghettos and to younger pliable minds.
whats your model Jay -Z? Most guys who sell drugs i.e crack in the hood go to JAIL..They dont get to become rapstars or marry girls like Beyonce. the truth is she would never NEVER be with him if he wasnt rich and he would NEVER be with her if she werent attractive… so sad..the superficial trying to be profound
The US can be sold anything, with a good coat of shellac by the media elites and a catchy slogan “yes we can”…..
I take it he never went to SCHOOL? No teachers in his neighborhood, according to him — but even if that’s true, weren’t there any teachers at his school? No role models = he didn’t bother to go to school.
Moron. And anyone who accepts his stupid “excuses” is a moron, too, along with the “journalist” (HA!) who “interviewed” him and bought his story with no questions asked.
Some people here sound like bigot racists. Have you ever listened to Jay-Zs music? He is a very talented and intelligent person. Have you seen him opening Glastonbury? THAT is class!
He is not the most successful rapper without a reason.
Obama T, No two wrongs dont make it right , but the wrong that was done in the first place should never have been done. Thats it!! We can agree or disagree but i still give Jay z props for what he has accomplished and thats my opinion!!
Miss Janet,, thank you and i definetly agree with you! And for the ones that dont, good for you thats your business and like i always say if you dont like his music the knob goes to off or dont listen to it. We have choices and i choose to like what i like and others do too so more power to them!!
Oprah is never happier than when she’s hanging off one celeb or another. She really treats them like demigods.
WTH does Jay Z need Oprah for? She’s so 70’s and boring - why dont people get over her?
You people are really sad. Jay-Z is worth like $400 million which he earned. He is hardly anyone’s fool. Just because he came from the projects doesn’t mean he had a project mentality. He is extremely bright and one of the smartest people in the industry….period. His wife, on the other hand, is an idiot. ha ha I’m with MissJanet, it sounds like a bunch of racism to me. But these are the same folks who would say 50 Cent is stupid too. For some, black obviously equals less intelligent.
he’s the man.
and i’d say the word has indeed been disarmed.
Jay-Z overcame poverty, adversity and hard knocks by following his dream, persevering and being savvy. He is interesting for Oprah to talk to because he REALLY was from the hood, the ghetto, married a mega-star who was already a rich girl. He is an immensely talented, intelligent guy! I, personally, find this interview extremely interesting. I think Jay-Z is an excellent role model. He is saying he had no role models and he knew he was doing it wrong at first and changed the direction of his life.
And I kind of have to agree that I think people are being racist.
He brilliantly opened up Glastonbury with utter class saying,”They say you don’t want me here, Glastonbury … Now tell me, where is the love?” The crowd roared with excitement. He is tearing down walls.
(Kind of the same as people calling Kid Rock White Trash– he also came from poverty stricken to filthy rich similarly to Jay-Z, another great story O should get at!)
Also, I agree the “N” word has been disarmed, never-the-less it is HIGHLY frowned upon in our house. Racism is so old fashioned and certainly not what all the cool kids are doing
I agree with the posters above who feel this is more about racism. If you have such a strong hatred for someone you don’t know then you are indeed filled with hate.
I don’t know Jay Z, I don’t really listen to his music, only a few songs here and there. He seems like a regular guy, with as many faults as any other person from what I see.I don’t agree with some of the things he says, but that certainly doesn’t fill me with burning rage.
If you don’t like him than fine. You can even say why you don’t really care for him. But when you start saying hateful and hurtful words about someone whom you do not know, you are filled with hate and you do not know love. Jesus saves!
