Christian Bale has been a master of reinvention when it comes to transforming his body for his various roles, but the sight of the gaunt Welsh actor Monday afternoon (July 13) on set of The Fighter raises suspicions as to the nature of his health.
Though the 35-year-old actor is playing boxer-turned trainer-turned-drug addict Dickie Eklund in the film, his hollowed features seem extreme for a man who bulked up to play the muscly caped crusader in last year’s Batman.
Bale is a notorious method actor and lost a staggering 63 pounds for the film The Machinist only to regain it all back and then some for the first Batman installment.
Is his metabolism and ultimately his health being adversely affected by the excessive weight fluctuation?

He’s a weirdo. He looks sick here. And either he’s losing his hair or it’s part of the role. Not a good look.
He’s in character playing Dicky Eklund who was really skinny and a crackhead who had hair like that.
He should have a talk with Tom Hanks. Hanks’ weight fluctuated with various roles and it took a toll on his body. I hope Bale is strong enough to handle all the stress from bulk to thin all the time.
My god he looks scary! I understand tranforming yourself for roles, but it shouldn’t be at the sake of your health. He seriously looks like he is dying! I hope a health professional is supervising him while he is losing weight.
He got super thin for Rescue Dawn too and recovered just fine from that.
he did this already in The Machinist and wreaked havoc on his body. didn’t like him in Public Enemies - too robotic
He’s playing a crackhead people! WTF is he supposed to look like??? And for what he’s getting paid I’d look like that too. He’s not exactly risking his life.
He’s a method actor. This is what he does. Bale has always been known as an actor who “becomes” the character he’s playing.
Suffice it to say, if he looked like that when trying to become an actor he wouldn’t have been hired. Why do gorgeous people (like Charlize) want to take on ugly roles? Think of the poor ugly actors who would love the work!
^^It’s usually the “ugly” roles (as you put it) that have depth, range and complexity that serious actors crave.
