Janet Jackson made a surprise appearance at the end of the 2009 BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (June 28) to thank the crowd for their support in the wake of her brother Michael Jackson’s untimely death.
“My entire family wanted to be here tonight. But it was just too painful,” the emotional star said. “So they elected me to speak with all of you and I’m going to keep it very short but I’d just like to say that to you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family.
“He will forever live in all of our hearts,” she continued. “On behalf of my family and myself thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much. Thank you so much.”

i don’t understand this family. MJ just died and they’re at award shows? janet was obviously very upset but a written statement would have sufficed.
Kathy - She did it to personally address the fans and to say thank you to them for all their love and support. I think it’s wonderful to acknowledge them. The entire world is in shock. I thought it was completely respectful and appropriate. I’m sure Michael would have wanted the fans to be recognized.
Wow, she’s looking Dianna RossISH here. Personally, I think Joe Jackson is loving the sound of cash registers and will capitalize on his son’s death just like he was so successful in screwing up his life.
^ I agree about Joe. It is beyond me how Micheales children could end up with Joe and Katherine, considering what Michael and Janet said about them.
Janet was fine with me here, she gave a really moving statement, I really felt sorry for her.
